Si algú volgués revisar I'estat con- temporani de I'antrapologia dels sentits hauria de comengar amb el llibre font editat per David Howes i titulat The Vo- rieties of Sensory Experience (Howes ed. 199 I), parant una atenció especial a I'assaig introductori de Howes i a la conclusió de Howes i Classen que ofe- reix un paradigma per estudiar el sen- sorium (un terme derivat de la primera secció de The Presence of the Word de Walter Ong [ I 9671 que també estd re- editada al volum de Howes). Howes i els seus companys a m b 6 ofereixen un recompte d'última hora de la seva po- sició i recerca actual a la pagina web de la Universitat Concordia (Canada). D'altres qüestions generals recents in- clouen Landscopes of the Mind (1990) de Porteous i Worlds of Sense (1 993) de Classen, per6 els lectors potser vo- len tornar a la qüesti6 de W h o r f a Lan- guage, Thought ond Reolity dels diversos móns conceptuals dels hopis i la "Mit- jana europea estdndard" tal i com s'ex- pressa a traves del llenguatge (Whorf 1956). Mitjangant estudis recents dels cinc sentits "occidentals", els lectors podran construir una bibliografia de les fonts classiques. Per a I'olfacte es recomana Ammo (1 994) de Classen, Howes i Synnott; per al gust, The Taste of EthnogrophicThings (1 989) de Stoller i Memories of Repasts (2001) de David Sutton. Per als sons i I'oi'da (també fent referencia a I"'acustimologia", la manera acústica d'entendre un escenari concret amb els seus sons), I'argumen- tació de Stoller al llibre que acabem de

mencionar sobre I'existencia en algu- nes societats &una manera de pensa- ment fonamentalment aural mes que no pas verbal o visual es una referencia important, igual com ho es a I'obra d'Steven Feld (1982) el so, I'o'ida i la música. Mentre la vista i la visió poden semblar en alguns aspectes mes fami- liaritzats amb els lectors occidentals, els estudis entre les diferents cultures demostren que la vista i la visió es con- ceptualitzen de manera diferent; un bon exemple per comengar podria ser amb I'obra de Berlin i Kay basada en el color (1969). Finalment, pel que fa al tacte i a la percepció dctil, considerats sovint a la cultura occidental com una associació amb la infantesa i amb les dones i amb la intimitat de les rela- cions de la llar mes que no pas amb la maduresa, els homes i el domini politi- cojural, trobem una font típica en I'es- tudi de Leenhardt de les conceptualit- zacions tdctils en una societat melane- sia (1 979).
