Since its foundation in 1984 at the University of Napoli Federico II, the Doctorate of Lingua Inglese per Scopi Speciali (English for Special Purposes) has been a centre of attraction for many novice and expert researchers both at national and international level.
It has raised interest about the many different facets and issues of specialized English(es) in the academic world at large, sensitizing scholars of other disciplines to the subtleties of linguistic encoding and the often taken-for-granted conventions of English academic and professional discourses.
Since it has contributed to the birth and development of a larger interdisciplinary Doctorate - “Mind, Gender and Language”- some reflections on the past and current experiences and practices seem in order. This doctoral day aims to encourage a reunion of the former Doctoral Students of English for Special Purposes with a view to exploring and discussing the new developments in the domain of English for Special Purposes from theoretical and applied perspectives.
