Na onal Tourist Route in Norway
The young architects at the Norwegian Studio PUSHAK created the
Storberget scenic overlook at the south end of the highway that stretches
for sixty-seven kilometres from Kokelv to the shing village of Havøysund, which has given its name to the now famous National Tourist Route. The architects have also designed the rest areas at Lillefjord and Snefjord.

The Storberget project consists of two components. One is the observation point: a platform composed of two slabs of reinforced concrete poured on site whose curves follow the contour lines of the hill, on which it appears lightly perched. Oak benches are integrated into the cement, offering a place to sit for travellers as they contemplate the surrounding seascape: the

The second component is a parking lot with a similar platform along one side. A gravel path leads from the parking lot to the scenic overlook.

Between 1994 and 1997, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration developed a pilot project involving the creation of four nature itineraries. The initiative was a great success and in 1998 the Norwegian Parliament approved the Norwegian Scenic Route, a project to develop and promote scenic routes—for automobiles, bicycles and pedestrians—with the intention of leveraging them as international tourist attractions. In 2005, the NPRA selected eighteen routes to include in the project, setting the deadline of

2023 for their completion. The itineraries snake their way through some of Norway’s most beautiful natural settings. Some two hundred fty picnic areas and scenic overlooks were planned along these routes. All were to be created as innovative architectures with stimulating artistic installations that could stand as tourist attractions in their own right, enriching the visitor experience. So far, the Scenic Route Department has engaged more than
fty architects, landscape designers, industrial designers, and artists. Most of them are Norwegian (including Jensen & Skodvin, Reiulf Ramstad, and Rintala Eggertsson Architects), with the exception of a number of big names, such as Peter Zumthor and Louise Bourgeois. Each was given broad artistic freedom because innovation and creativity were considered paramount by the Department, which partners with non-governmental committees for quality, architecture and art. The result has been an extraordinary outburst of inventiveness that saw many budding studios gaining international fame for their work.
