In Sar degna lo spopolamento e l’abbandono dei centri abitati sono fenomeni in rapida ev oluzione, con pr eoccupanti ricadute in termini di sostenibilità ambientale e socio-culturale, tali da av er stimolato, già a par tir e dagli anni settanta del N ov ecento, l’inter esse di numer osi studiosi affer enti a div ersi settori disciplinari: antr opologico, sociologico, ar cheologico, demografico e urbanistico . G li appor ti specialistici, però, non forniscono un quadr o unitario e tralasciano gli aspetti legati alla valenza storico-culturale, architettonica e materica dei sistemi insediativi in questione.

Tali pr emesse fungono da base per il monitoraggio dei contesti indagati, nel duplice intento di accompagnar e con coscienza i pr ocessi di trasformazione sociale, economica e ambientale, e di scongiurar e il sacrificio dei valori storico-culturali e identitari di cui essi sono testimonianza, traendone al contempo indicazioni sui meccanismi di innesco e di “contagio ” dello spopolamento nell ’interno dell ’isola, laddo ve l’assimilazione tra er osione abitativ a e per dita di vitalità potr ebbe riv elarsi non inevitabile se riv alutata in chiav e di (ri)connessione tra sistemi territoriali ancora fr uibili, attrav ersabili, inscrivibili nelle mappe mentali di popolazioni a

D epopulation and abandonment of to wns in Sar dinia ar e phenomena of rapid dev elopment, with sev er e reper cussions in terms of socio-cultural and envir onmental sustainability . S ince the sev enties of the 20th centur y, these phenomena hav e stimulated the inter est of many scholars fr om differ ent disciplines, such as anthr opologists, sociologists, ar chaeologists, demographers and planners. H ow ev er , the sectorial contributions do not pr ovide a unitar y frame wor k and ov erlook the aspects linked to the cultural, architectural and material v
alues of the studied settlements.
Star ting fr om this awar eness, the Chair of R estoration of the U niv ersity of Cagliari has recently launched a line of resear ch on the topic, with regar d to the entir e Sar dinian territor y. The goal is to obtain a cognitiv e ov er vie w fully awar e of the on-going dynamics, thr ough an inter disciplinar y appr oach that integrates differ ent specializ ed skills, aiming to dir ect the analysis pr
ocesses and outline effectiv
e futur e lines of action. The resear ch began with the definition of a glossar y, in or der to interpr et the differ ent meanings that each branch of kno wledge associates with specific terms to delineate the field of study . S ubsequently , the methodical sear ch of the to wns affected by these phenomena was carried out, integrating the results that came to light fr om censuses and statistical sur veys and deduced fr om in situ inv estigations. This highlighted that abandonment ev ents occurr ed with a cer tain continuity ov er time, with gr eater intensity during the 14th, 18th and 20th centuries. M or eo ver , other significant data is the heter ogeneity of forms of anthr opic settlements and depopulation dynamics, which determined the need to dev elop a tax onomy for the classification of this kind of heritage, also thr ough the suppor t of specialists in the field of sociology and anthr opology . The case studies ar e classified accor ding to: chr onological aspects, with refer ence both to the establishment age and to the period of abandonment; aetiological parameters (natural, economic-political and anthr opic causes); curr ent

The collected data ar e pr ogr essiv ely flo wing into a database linked to a G eographic Information System, highly effectiv e for the cr eation of a synoptic vie w of the regional territorial pattern, and also for highlighting the peculiar values of each individual case. These pr emises aim to constitute a significant foundation for monitoring the inv estigated contexts, in or der to conscientiously guide the pr ocesses of social, economic and envir onmental transformation, attempting to av oid the sacrifice of this heritage, witness of identity , historic and cultural values, and at the same time deducing indications on the inception and “contagion ” mechanisms of depopulation in the inland Sar dinian ar eas, wher e communities er osion and loss of vitality could be pr ev entable, if re-consider ed in terms of (r e)connection betw een territorial systems which ar e still usable, cr ossable, definable in mental maps
of populations with differ
ent gradient of attachment.
