received 2 March 2020

We are happy to present the FATA 2019 conference proceedings that include talks in heavy ion collisions and nuclear medical applications as well as, more generally, the foundations of the timing performances needed to achieve the best results in both fields. Attention is also devoted to the applications of this kind of researches in the future.

The realisation of a dedicated proceedings collection is the final achievement of the workshop held in Acireale on Fast Timing Applications and we hope it will contribute to enlarge the interest among scientists enthusiastically devoting their activities to the progress of fundamental and applied nuclear physics.

A significant aspect of the workshop has been the stimulating presence of younger scientists who triggered interesting discussions.

The realization of the Conference and of the proceedings greatly benefited from the support of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and the cooperation, at various levels, of the local involved institutions, which we publicly want to thank: the INFN Sezione di Catania, INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS), Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia “Ettore Majorana” di Catania, Accademia degli Zelanti e dei Dafnici di Acireale, Centro Siciliano di Fisica Nucleare e Struttura della Materia (CSFNSM) and the town administration (Comune di Acireale).

Unfortunately, the planned visit to INAF-Catania Astrophysical Observatory “M. G. Fracastoro” – Mountain Station Serra La Nave (Mt. Etna, 1735 m) could not take place, because of adverse weather conditions. We warmly thank the Observatory Director Isabella Pagano and the organisers Giuseppe Cutispoto and Giuseppe Leto for their generous availability.

Thanks are due to Scionix-Holland and Caen S.p.A. (Italy) corporations for their valuable support and to our friends of the editoral board of FATA proceedings.

(∗) Chairman of the international workshop Fast Timing Applications for Nuclear Physics and Medical Imaging (FATA 2019), Acireale, 3–5 September 2019.
