Female Cosmetic Genital Surgery Sir:

W

e read with great interest the article from Hamori and Stuzin entitled “Female Cosmetic Genital Surgery”1 and we enjoyed the complementary video.

Labia minoris reduction is one of the most requested female cosmetic genital operations, and the most used operative techniques nowadays are edge trim and the wedge resection. Dr. Hamori uses the wedge resection for her busy clinical practice and in this communica-tion she gives a step-by-step practical guide to the key operative points to perform it.

We found this article very helpful: it is pragmatic and ready to be applied to our everyday clinical prac-tice. Senior surgeons will have novel and intriguing insights such as the “superficial mucosal and skin exci-sion” (point 9 on the list); junior surgeons can use the advice “when learning this technique, it is essen-tial to be conservative” (point 5 on the list). We would

recommend that all surgeons who are willing to per-form this type of surgery read it.

Nevertheless, we would like to add that the wedge excision was first described by Martincík and Malinovský in 1971 (47 years ago), although many attri-bute its authorship to Alter (1998).2,3 It is therefore an

old surgical technique, but still very effective.

Martincík and Malinovský called the technique “resectio cuneiformis labii minoris”; it consists of removal of a posterior wedge of hypertrophic labium minoris. For the accurate description of this one and other surgical techniques available for labia minora reduction, we refer the reader to the recent com-prehensive reviews edited by our and other research groups.4,5
