Epigene(cs inves@gates the way in which the

func@oning and expression of genes is

modified by the environment

intra-genera(onal epigene,cs:

modifica@ons through epigene@c marks,

induced by the environment during the

individual's life@me, which produce a

modified phenotype

trans-genera(onal or intergenera(onal

epigene@cs: inheritance of a modified

phenotype from the parental genera@on,

without altera@ons in the DNA sequence

Recent research in empirical aesthe@cs has

highlighted the role played by contextual

factors in aesthe@c experience. Leder,

Nadal (2014) argued that understanding

how and to what extent context and

environment influence our aesthe@c

experience is one of the main challenges

facing contemporary empirical aesthe@cs.

Does epigenetics play a

role in aesthetic

appreciation and taste?

Human mirror system: not a fixed machinery

to establish associa@ons between observed

and performed ac@ons, rather a variable

neural circuitry subject to epigene,c

modifica@on through the individual's history

of interac@ons with environmental

condi@ons (Ferrari et al. 2013). It has been

notoriously argued that human mirror system

plays a role in aesthe@c experience and

apprecia@on.

Mice taught to fear a par@cular odour (acetophenone)

transmit this fear both to their offspring and the next

genera,on. Molecular analyses showed that the gene coding

for the receptor Olfr151 (which recognizes acetophene) was

differen@ally demethylated (Dias, Ressler 2014). May it be

possible that also our parents' or even perhaps grandparents'

aesthe@c preferences and tastes exercise an influence on our

own aesthe@c experience?

Probably yes! Consider for instance (1):

Why epigenetics in empirical aesthetics?

Promises and benefits

:

•

It may help open a window on the individual

component of aesthe@c experience, even below the

level of networks of regions.

•

It may help definitely overcome the burdensome

dichotomy between Nature and Nurture

•

A first step towards the “integra,on of empirical

aesthe@cs with the neurobiological and evolu@onary

perspec@ves on art and aesthe@cs, forging a true

cogni@ve, neuro- and evolu@onary science of

aesthe@cs” (Leder, Nadal 2014)

…However, be careful!

Cautions and limitations:

•

Animal studies - and, among animals, those ones with a short

genera@on @me - are the most effec@ve means of

understanding genes regula@on.

•

The study of trans-genera@onal inheritance requires an

extended investment of @me, with the maintenance and

breeding of more than one genera@on of organisms.

•

The mechanisms through which the effects of environmental

exposure become embedded in human germ cells are s@ll

unclear.
