WWII-damaged Italian Sculptures, between Berlin and Moscow:
Conservation, Restoration and Research
Workshop organized by Paul Hofmann and Neville Rowley, Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz Berlin, April 10-13, 2018 Guests: Workshop with curator and restorers from the Pushkin Museum Moscow (Daria Babich, Igor Borodin, Vasily Rastorguev, Mikhail Tulubenskiy, Yulia Ustinova, Yury Voronin) and Italian Renaissance Sculpture specialists (Francesco Caglioti, Laura Cavazzini, Aldo Galli). Planning Participants from Russia are arriving on April 9. P. Hofmann is to welcome them at the airport. Participants from Italy are arriving on 10 April; they may not be part of the planning that day. Tuesday, April 10 10:00-12:00, Bode Museum: guided tour of the permanent collection with a focus on recently restored war-damaged Italian sculptures. 14:00-16:00, Museums Island: visit of the permanent collections. 16:30-18:00, Bode Museum: visit of the exhibition “Beyond Compare: Art from Africa in the Bode Museum”.2 Wednesday, April 11 09:00-10:00, Bode Museum: • official welcome (Ch. Haak, Deputy General Director, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin; M. Nawroth, coordinator for scientific projects with Russia and Eastern Europe, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin; J. Chapuis, Deputy Director, Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin) • Presentation of the workshop (P. Hofmann, N. Rowley) 10:00-12:30, Bode Museum, facilities: focus on some 1945-damaged objects that have not been restored. 12:30-13:30, Bode Museum: lunch (restoration offices). 13:30-17:00, Bode Museum, restoration workshops: presentation of ongoing restoration projects funded by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation. Thursday, April 12 09:00-10:30, Gipsformerei: visit and focus on the possibilities of restoration through plaster casts (M. Helfrich, T. Schelper, TBC). 11:00-12:30, Rathgen-Forschungslabor: visit and focus on the possibilities of technical investigation on burnt sculptures (I. Reiche). 13:00-14:00: lunch (near the Rathgen-Forschungslabor). 15:00-17:00, Altes Museum: visit and focus on current restorations of bronze objects, Antikensammlung (V. Pelz, TBC).
