COVID-19: Health Policy and Society

As the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is felt across Europe, this panel will address questions relating to the health emergency and its societal implications. What are the factors that will determine the projected short and long-term development of the pandemic? What are the prospects for better testing and a vaccine? What are the best containment and suppression public health strategies? How can governments manage national public health systems under extreme stress? What is the role of the EU and international organisations in this respect?

COVID-19: Economic Policies for the Aftermath

The economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis will be immense, and governments across the EU as well as EU institutions have already announced measures to support people and economic activity. This panel will discuss the short and long-term economic outlook, and the appropriate policy response and questions which need to be addressed at a national and EU level. Is the ECB doing enough to maintain liquidity? What should a recovery fund look like? What will the long-term implications of such measures be? Is the response at national level adequate and well targeted? Does the European response go far enough to maintain liquidity and support the recovery?

As COVID-19 has spread around the world, it has exposed weaknesses in international cooperation arrangements put in place to respond to health emergencies of this kind, as well as their economic and social repercussions. This panel will address questions such as: are existing institutions and governance arrangements well equipped to steer the international response? How could international cooperation be improved? How can trade flows and international value chains be protected from collapsing? How can global growth, as well as financial stability be preserved?
