SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS

His main interests are pathology and diseases of marine mammals: more in detail, his studies have been focused on the detection of anthropic related causes of death and on morbillivirus mortalities and immune response in cetaceans. Due to his experience and work on marine mammals pathology he was invited to the workshop on “Marine Mammal Morbilliviruses: Current Knowledge and Future Directions” helded at Princeton University, USA, August 5-7 2014 within the National Institutes of Health Research and Policy of Infectious Disease Dynamics (RAPIDD) program. In fact, recent publications confirmed his interest in morbilliviral infection in cetaceans and the interaction between the virus and the immune response in these hosts.

In 2010 he was appointed for the coordination of the Cetaceans’ strandings Emergency Response Team (CERT) which is called to intervene in case of marine mammals’ mass strandings, large cetaceans mortalities and cetaceans stranded alive and since 2002 he has cooperated with the Mediterranean Marine Mammals Tissue Bank. During this period he contributed to produce several diagnostic protocols and guidelines both in Italy and in Europe and published a textbook dedicated to cetaceans' pathology. In particular, being involved in two sperm whales’ mass strandings, he has the opportunity to study procedures and best practice to be applied during these events and in case of alive animals strandings. Other scientific interested are related to postmortem analyses and forensic techniques to be apply in the necropsy service of the Department where he's involved since 2002. His experience on postmortem analyses are focus not only in marine mammals but also in sea turtles and in all wild animals kept in zoos, as shark, penguins and seals. In the past, he participated to several international cooperation projects in Madagascar, Perù and Algeria.
