must understandthe
testimonyof
theirlove and
serviceas a sign of the
deep harmony betweenthe
Gospel andthe
highest valuesof

Why
the term
ENTRUSTMENT?Before Vatican
II we
usedto
speakof
an"act
of
consecrationto Mary". However, the
Council has since clarifiedthe true
theological significanceof the tetm
consecration (althoughcurrent
usageof this word still
includes meaningsthat
are lesstheologically correct). From Vatican
II
the Churchhas used the term with
greater precision.ra To describebetter our
relationshipwith Mary,
our patronessand
collaboratorwith Christ for
theKingdom,
PopeJohn Paul II has preferred
theword "entrustment"
(affidamento)- which
in-cludes
our
affection, self-oblation,willing
service,our filiation, "free
servitude",trust
and reliance.In fact, on 8
December 1981,in the
basilicaof St Mary Major,
Rome,the Holy
Father com- memoratedthe
1550th anniversaryof the
Councilof
Ephesusand
solemnly"enffusted" the
