received the sad newsby radio of the
suddendeath of
ourCouncillor for Formation, Father luaenal
Dbo.You
can rvell imaginehow
shocked and distressed u/ev/ere.
Father Vanseveren, Brother Romaldi and myself had finished our work and managed to returnto
Romein time for the
Massand
obsequies at the Generalate.The
deathof
FatherDho is a
serious lossfor us all
and has certainly givenus food for
medita-tion: we
rememberthe
wonderful exampleof
hislife,
his missionary vocation, his whole-hearted and cheerful consecration, his kindness, his wisdom and spiritual discernment, his competent and knorvledge- able graspof
human learning,his
Lrnfailing serviceto
the Christian educationof the
young (especiallyin the
vocation-apostolate),his
many-talented con-tributions in
various ecclesial areas,and his
wise and unstinted dedicationto the
formationof
our confreresalong the lines of the recent

Indeed
it
was this latter exacting rvorkof
initial and ongoing formationat world level that he
was engagedin when
death overtookhim. It was

Bosco's assertion thatit

designsof God;
how differentftom
our plans, our calculations,our
desi- res! Death (especially whenit
is sudden and thwartsour efforts to

projects forGod's Kingdom

sets us pondering sadlyon how
genuineis our faith;

ourselves meditatingon the
certaintywe
ima- gine we havefor
our projects.Our
sympathy goes outto
Father Dho's mother, his relations and friends, his council colleagues andhis
co-workersin the
Formation Department. He was loved and reveredby
all.As we
have reflectedon

Christ, and the mysteryof the
after-life, all our

have just returned from visiting the vast Continentof Africa (33 million
sq. km!).To help me I took Brother
RenatoRomaldi. I
wanted
the visit to

Salesian vocation as the Congregation commitsitself to the
burgeoningof Don
Bosco's Charismain
that Continent.Befote putting my
thoughtsto you on

prompting camefrom the

practical planning and the adoptionof a

those countries where missionary activity is mosturgent.

second centuryof our
missionary presence, recallingDon
Bosco'sprophetic
wish 2 (andnot
excluding possible missionary developmentin
other needy and promising regions), the Salesianswill
apply themselvesto
an appreciable stepping-upof

journeytook me to the
southof
the continent, whereI met the
confreresworking
in South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique.During my
secondvisit I
was ableto
take inLibreville for the
confreresof
Gabon, Cameroun, Equatorial Guinea andthe
Congo Republic; then Lubumbashi and Kigalifor
the Salesians from Zaire, Rwanda andBurundi. I
alsovisited
Zambia andKenya.

was impressedby
the excellent and necessarywork that
has beenin
progressfor
many years,thanks to the generous missionary zeal 6f the Provin- ces
of
Ireland, Portugal, France, Spain and Belgium.I
couldnot but
enthuse over the prospectsof
our ProjectAfrica, both
wherewe arc
already estab- lished o and whete we are nor.v implementing "new presences"(in
at least eight other republics: Angola,Benin, Liberia,
Senegal, Sudan,Kenya,
Tanzania and Madagascar).At
the present time we have oneonly
Salesian Provincein the
whole Continent, namely, CentalAfrica (Zake,
Rwandaand Burundi). There

the Parliament of Uganda:"Africa
is now eman- cipatedfrom its

readyfor a new
era";and last May, John Paul

saidin Kenya:
"Thisnew
era has begun".s"Africa is on the brink
ofacquiring her
rightful
positionin
the lJniverse".6However, the
manyAfrican
nations, teemingwith
young people, are facedwith
problemson
all sides, andby
thedifficulty of
reconcilingtheir
own characteristic cultureswith the ubiquitous
"nev/culture" thrust upon them by
technology, science and various ideologies. Unfomunately thereis
great dangerthat
these peopleswill be
exploited and subjugated anewby
systemsthat
exclude Gospelvalues;
"materialism,no matter from where it
emerges,
is
an enslavementfrom which
man must be defended".TThe
needfor Christ is
urgentif
Africans areto
achievean
integratedAfrican
development inthe
newworld
they are entering.A trip
to Africa is not just a changein
geograph-ical
position anda new
stockof
customs:it is
akind of flight in time
backto the eatly
centuriesof
Christianity;it
would seem thatin Africa
todaythe transition
hasjust
been madefrom the
Old Testamentto the New. It is true that from
thesecond
to
thefourth
centuries Christianlife
flour- ishedin North Africa. To
quote PaulVI,
"Therecome
to mind
great doctorsand writers
such as Origen, Athanasius,Cyril,
thetlgreat luminaries ofthe
Alexandrine school; and wherethe
Meditema- nean washes the shores of Africa, Tertullian, Cyprian, and especiallythat
great shininglight of

dom, Augustine. Then there are
the
great Fathersof the
Desert,Paul, Anthony and
Pacomius, thefirst
foundersof a
monasticismthat
spread both east and u/est.And

St Athanasius and was the apostleof Ethiopia.
These shining examples, togetherwith
the saintly African PopesVictor I,
Melchiades and GelasiusI,
are indeed partof
the Church's common heritage. Furthermore, the writingsof
the Christian authorsof Africa
arestill
basic todayin
the under- standing of salvation historyin
the light of the\(ord
of
God.
As we recall the ancient glories of ChristianAfica, we
should alsobear in mind the
Greek Patriarchateof
Alexandria,the Coptic
Church of Egypt and the Ethiopian Church,for
they share in commonwith the
CatholicChurch the
doctrinaland spiritual patrimony of the great
Sainrs and Fathersnot only of their own
countrybut of
all the ancient Church. These Churches have laboured and suffered muchto
keep alive the nameof
Chris-tianity in Africa
overthe
centuries,,.sAll this is
importanthistory
and musrnot
beforgotten. But
mostof the
youngAfrican
nations have barelya
centuryof
Christianityto
celebrate;indeed many are
far
more recentstill.
One could saythat the African
"inculturation"eor
absorptionof
the Gospelof
Christis only a
matterof a
few decades,but is
progressingin
leaps and bounds.In the
eleven yearsthat
have elapsed between the journeyof
PaulVI to
Kampala and John PaulII's visit
to Kinshasa, the number of African Catho- lics has practically doubled, ftom25 to 50
million.Africa is
witnessingthe growrh and
developmentof a vast
and promising ecclesial "happening" in keepingwith

with African Bishops.
Nowadays,rather
than"implant"
the Church, the strategy is to incorporate good solid co-workersinto
the young local Church- es,with their African
cultural characteristics; theywill help them grow,
strengthenthem in
their acceptanceof the
Gospeland enrich them with
those charismsthe Holy Spirit
has arousedin
the universalChurch to suit the mani{old forms
ofvitality of
the various nations.The Holy Father and
Africa: a
meetingof
soulsFrom
2 to
12 May theHoly
Father Pope JohnPaul II visited the
Churchesand
peoplesof
six nationsof Cenral Africa: Zaire,
Congo, Kenya, Ghana, UpperVolta
andThe Ivory Coast.
They were celebratingthe
centenaryof their
evangelisa-tion. In
yearsto
come, Christianityin Africa will look on this
journey astruly historic. For us
Sal-esians
it is an
authoritative confirmationof
ourGC2l
mandate, and an encouraging presagefor
our Project Africa.In this
apostolic and prophetic journeyof
thePope there are two
aspectsthat should set
usthinking: his
sensitive appreciationo{ so
many human valuesin the African culture;
andhis
ob-vious desire
for the "inculturation" of
the Gospel, making the Churchin Africa uuly

Unfortunately, however, the
Holy
Father foundit his duty to
note"with
stunned sadness"ra the evil influenceof
sin, ignorance, superctition, and the acceptance of foreign materialism that befouled their liberationftom
colonialism and was destroying their cultutal development. "Materialismin all its
guises always enslaves man;it
makeshim a
soul-less serfin
searchof worldly
goods; worsestill, it
shackleshim body and

godless ideologies.In

analysis man becomesa
slaveto

capitalistic consumerismnor

will do. It

the Gospel.The
Holy
Father really penetratedto the
heartof Africa;
andall
believers throughoutthe
world listened and agreedwith
him.The Pope referred
often to the
valuesof Afri-
can culture, especiallyin
his addressesto
State Pre- sidents, diplomats, intellectuals and university stu-dents. When he
discussedthe
Africanization ofthe
Church,he
spokemainly to rhe
bishops andtheir close co-workers, especially the priests.
There
are two
closelylinked
topics,and
theycall for
study, research, courage andloyalty.
The Afticanizationof
Christianity, accordingto
the Holy Father,is a
matterof "vast
and profound dimen-sions; and they have not yer been
sufficiently explored. Thereis
the matterof
suitable languagefor
presentingthe Christian
messageso that it
reaches
the spirit
andthe
heartof Africans;
andthe matter of
catechesis, theological thought, andthe most
suitable expressionof the liturgy
and sacredart;
and finally, community waysof
Christian living".r6In all
placesthe
missionof the
Churchis
to make disciples. Through theHoly
Spirit the Churchis striving to
raise uD genuineAfrican
Christians.She
has the power from God to
make genuinedisciples of the Risen Christ by conserving, purifying, transfiguring and promoting
all the
richesof
their specific cultural heritage.Speaking
of the
necessary and slow process ofthe
Africanizationof the
Church,the
Pope madefrequent reference
to
the excellent foundations laidby
the missionaries; the unfathomablefruits of
the African martyrs; the importanceof
native vocations and the urgent need of a well-rained laity committedto
ecclesial development; the indispensabilityof
the consecrated and religiouslife in its
various forms (especially amongthe
women asa
witnessto
thedignity of
womenin the
Church andin
society)."African women", the
Holy
Father said, "have beenwilling
bearersof life and
guardiansof

anage-old process through the centuries and has always accompanied and characterised the important epochs

These aredifficulties that call for
closeand
understanding examination.In

in the light of the faith of the
universalChurch,
"which is the
samefor all
peoplesof
alltimes and
in all

such casesit is
the culturesthat
haveto be
raised, transformed and impregnatedby the original

the Gospel andin
harmonywith
the magisteriumof
the Church."2lPreserving intact the deposit
of faith

right he exercises ordinary jurisdiction,is

dimensionof the
implanting ofthe
Gospelin that
samelocal Church: the first duty is to
preserveintact the
depositof faith
andthe unity of the
Churchin the world; and
the secondis to
garnerfrom the
culturestheir
parti- cular expressionsof
Christian living, celebration and thinking through which the Gospelwill

hear the wordsof

Rwanda: he maintained that
Africa
and Don Boscowere made
for
one another, andthat the
SalesianVocation
would be
inseparablefrom the
African youth apostolate,Statistics
show an
explosive increasein
thenumber
of
young people throughout the continent;they are lively, perceptive, sensitive, intelligent, do-
cile;
they love music andart;
they are deeply reli- gious, keento
improve themselves,but
neglectedthough inadequate social structures.
(I
was deeply saddenedat the
unbelieveable sightof a little
six- year-oldin a juvenile prison!) They are at
the mercyof
idleness, ignorance, materialand
moral wretchednessand so
many aberrations.They
arein
desperate needof
help.The
placefor Don
Bosco's charismais in
thelocal
Churches- to
collaboratein bringlng
the Gospelto the
young,to
mould theminto
"honest citizens and good Christians".A
hundred years ago the Salesian Vocation wentto
South America and established itsel{in
strength.Fifty
years laterit
turned to Asia and has flourishedin a
numberof
counriesthere.
Todayit
goes to the Black Continent andwill
humbly implant itselfin loyalty to Don
Boscoand
become vigorouslyAfrican. Our
Project Africa has been placed under the motherly protectionof
Mary Helpof
Christians.Confreres due
for
Africa and those already therewill be
quickenedby the
renewed missiology of VaticanII, by the
directivesof the
Magisterium, andin
particularby
the Pope's recent pastoral and missionary journey.I
have spokenin this
vein (especiallyat
Libre.ville,
Kansdbulaand
Butare)with

present workersin Africa,
and others soonto join
them,will
needinitiative;
they mustlift up their
eyes beyond the existing necessary Provincial structures and promoteand further informed
dialogue between Africans.This
study and interchangeof
experiences shouldbe
donein union with the
RectorMajor
and hisCouncil; in this way
suitable common principleswill be worked out for the
developmentof
theSalesian apostolate. During my recent journey
I
wasable,
with
Father Vanseveren and Brother Romaldi, to sitin
on a discussion of thissort. I
am convincedthis kind of

was interested in finding out what Don Bosco had desired and dream- ed regardingthe
Salesian presencein Africa. It
isinteresting and encouraging
to
recall someof
the circumstances.In
L886, towards the endof
hislife,
Don Bosco was chairing a meetingof
the Superior Council two days beforethe
Feastof Mary Help of
Christians.Father Francis Dalmazzo,
the
Procurator General, was present and had tableda
proposalfor a
Sale-sian foundation in Cairo. After the
Procurator General had presentedthe
background facts, Don Bosco said,"I
shouldlike to
acceptthe
proposal.We
shall send afew

Another was the ever-active Bishop Daniel Combo-ni,
founderof the

the"Nigrizia Sisters",3r convinced preacher that Africa's hour
of
salvation was the responsibility of the whole Church. Then there was the brave Cardinal CharlesMartial
Lavigerie,founder of the \7hite
Fathers and other missionary institutes; he wasthe
apostleof
North \7estAfrica
and and battledfor
the aboli- tion of the Slave Trade;" and there were others too.33The
missionary heartof Don
Bosco was well known throughout theworld. His
biographer says,"Even in

missionary vocations".3nThese words of Father Ceria give cause

greatjoy, for it
seemsthat
sincethe
Chapter mandate,our
Generalate has recapturedthe spirit of
thoseearly days; letters and personal visits bring us contin-

had an inexhaustible supplyof
missionaries.However, the present crisis brings us up against serious problems.
Even
in
Don Bosco's time objections were made, the main one beingthe
needfor the
Congregationto
