October 27th, 2019 Motivation statement

I feel truly honored to be considered as a candidate for the Scientific Council of the Statione Zoologica Anton Dohrn Napoli. I am highly motivated to support one of the most well-known, prestigious – and beautiful - research stations for zoology in Europe. My qualifications for being a member of the Scientific Council of SZN include:

1) My broad scientific expertise in disciplines ranging from zoology, marine biology, microbiology and symbioses to 'omics', ecology and evolution;

2) My experience in leadership and management as the Director of a Max Planck Institute, President Elect of the largest international society for microbial ecology (ISME), and Chair of several Gordon Research Conferences;

3) My knowledge of evaluating research as an ERC Panel Member, member of the Board of Governors of the GEOMAR (Germany), editor of several scientific

journals, and reviewer of large research institutes (e.g. NIOZ) and organizations (e.g. Advisory Committee member of the Hamburg Ministry for Science and Research Council);

4) My standing in the scientific community, visible for example in being an Elected Member of EMBO, the American and European Academy of Microbiology, and the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina);

5) My dedication to service to the community, for example through my involvement in mentoring programs for young female researchers and numerous outreach activities.

If elected to the Scientific Council I would strive to support and strengthen the quality, internationality, innovativeness and integrity of research at the SZN.
