When used topically to treat wounds or burns, honey is generally applied either directly in a thin coat, or in the form of honey-soaked dressing.

Topically applied drugs are commonly recovered at concentrations of about 1÷10 g Kg-1 in skin tissue, while the levels of main bioactive compounds, like polyphenols, in honey range from about 50÷500 mg Kg-1.

Hence, the direct application of 0.1% (1g Kg-1) honey to cells in our experiments resulted in a delivery of about 0.05÷0.5 mg Kg-1 bioactive compounds, suggesting that the effects that we have observed should be quite

achievable by topical honey application
