PART I: ORGANIZED VIOLENCE, TRAUMA THEORY, DIAGNOSIS, AND EPIDEMIOLOGY - Introduction to the scientific concept of Psychotraumatology - Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and the

related Disorders of Extreme Stress - DES;

- Special problems and needs of survivors of organized violence (demographic, economical and health characteristics);

- Psychophysiology of stress and trauma;

- Condition of traumatized survivors during acute and chronic states;

- Assessment and diagnosis of PTSD and DES;

- Relationship between testifying and memory change in traumatized individuals (memory theory);

- Review of epidemiological data available for war zones, crisis regions and refugee camps;

- Design of appropriate mental health interventions and self protection measures;

- Introduction to various human rights instruments that deal with war, torture, organized violence and crimes against humanity;

- Integration of human rights advocacy, human security and justice seeking with the development of appropriate mental health methodologies at the level of the individual as well as the community.

PART II: TREATMENT AND SUPERVISION - Treatment of survivors of organized violence;

- Measures of ‘first aid’ for acutely traumatized survivors & impact of trauma on the life of communities and future generations;

- Identification of the symptoms of PTSD and DES in affected individuals;

Methods of acute intervention (treatment and prevention of psychotrauma);

- Comparison of long-term versus short-term treatment approaches;

- First stage training in Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET);

- Support for aid workers/field staff in case of vicarious traumatization;

- Support mechanisms for returning staff (organizational structures and peer group systems);

Faculty includes renowned scientists, clinical & field practitioners with a background in public health, psychotraumatology, brain research, humanitarian aid and human rights. Both, part I and II of the training will involve a combination of lectures, exercises, role plays and demonstrations, focused on the theoretical and practical skill training of the (future) trauma practitioner. Case studies will foster collective learning from real-life situations. A participatory, process-oriented approach, based on principles of adult learning will be followed. The workshop will continuously create space for discussion and sharing of participants’ own experiences, ideas and knowledge. The course is residential. Accommodation will be in local typical Italian hotels, close to the place of meeting, which will be in Cupramontana, a delightful Italian medieval village about 40km from the airport Ancona Falconara, in the hills of the Marche region.
