Lord, who has been so magnani- mous to us. God had blessed abundantly the action ofthat
groupof young men from the Oratory of
Valdoccowho,
gathered around Don Bosco "all unanimously determined to promote andmaintain
thetrue
charitythat
is neededin
thework
of the fes-tive
oratoriesfor
abandonedyouth
nowadays exposedto
many dangers", decidedto form
"a Societyor
Congregation" (cf.BM VI,
pp. 182).It is the concluding celebration of this jubilee,
opened last year,
in
which we wantto
renew our religious pro- fessionto make our own the
pledgeof our young founding
fathers:that
of always remainingwith
Don Bosco, following his 'dream,' his apostolic project, to ensure, Godwilling,
the conti-nuity
andthe
developmentof his
charism andof his
mission.4
Acrs oF THE GENERAL couNctLFrom this perspective, the year 2009 has been very enriching and
fruitful with
very many activitiesin
the Provinces fostering thespiritual
and pastoral renewal of the confreres. One feature which has especially helpedwith this
commitment has been the re-discovery ofthe
Constitutions, genuinely"psn
Bosco'swill
and testament, for us our book of
life
and for the poor andlittle
ones a pledge of hope" (C. art.196). Allow me, dear confreres, to say to you once again
that
these need to be always better known, loved, prayed and lived.From the start
2010 openswith the shining figure of
Don Rua.He knew how to
becomethe
son,the disciple and
the successorof Don
Bosco.He went
halves,that is
wasin fulI
communionwith him in his
labours and sufferings. Day afterday he imitated our Father, and with fruitful and
dynamic fidelity he made the Congregation and the Salesian Family flour- ish and expand.In all
ofthis
he takes his place before our eyes as our model! Looking again at Don Rua once again we want to makeour
ownthe
suggestions offeredin
my previous circular letter. They are simple and clear. A real plan of life.At this point, before presenting you
with
the commentary on the Strenna for 2010,I
want to give you some information aboutthe
main events of theselast
few months:from July until
the present. For a more detailed accountI
refer you to the Chronicle of the Rector Major and those of the Councillors, included inthis
issue ofthe
Acts. Youwill find there the visits to the
various Provinces andtalks in
a numberof
meetings and gatherings.Here I
shouldjust like to mention
those eventswhich to
me seem most outstanding.First
ofall I
wantto
mention the pilgrimagein
the stepsof
Saint Paul, whichwith
the all members of the Council we made between 27 June and 5 July. We passed through the main places associatedwith the life
ofthe
Apostle Paul on his journeysin
which hemet Christ,
andhis untiring
travels proclaiming the Gospel,from
Tarsus,the
place where he wasborn, to
Damas-cus, and Antioch, and Ephesus and to Athens.
It
was, as we had planned, areal spiritual
experience, markedby the
readingof the
Wordof
God andby "lectio divina" led by Fr Juan
Jos6 Bartolom6, and by reflections on Paulthe
evangelist.A
subjectwhich
remindedus
ofthe
commitmentto
evangelisation pro- posed to us by the GC26 and which represents the focal pointof the
Strennafor
2010. The pilgrimage was also anopportunity to
meetthe
Salesiancommunities working in
those places:Damascus and Aleppo
in
Syria,Istanbul in
Turkey.In
eachof
the communities, thevisit
of the RectorMajor
and the Council was an occasionfor fraternity
and celebration, also on thepart
of the young people and the Salesian Family.Something which affected us deeply, a real blow to the heart, was the death of our very dear confrere
Fr Antonio
Domenech,which
happenedon
20July, at the
houseof Marti
Codolar,in Barcellona. I cannot but recall his memory, given that
Fr Domenech was a member of the General Council for 12 years, offering his servicesto
the Congregationin
the YouthMinistry
Department. They were years oftotal
dedication,of work
re- flecting his many talents and dynamism. We shall never forget the witness he gave: his lovefor
life, the strongfaith
and sense of hope which marked the years of his illness.A
periodof
suf-fering,
oftrial
andof
grace,which transfigured him
and then broughthim
to the definitive meetingwith
the Lord. Tohim
go our thanks and our admiration.On 15 and 16 August,
with
Mother Yvonne Reungoat,I
took partin
the "European Confronto" at Colle Don Bosco, also cele-brating
the anniversary of thebirth
of our Founder and Father.This event,
with
the presence of Confreres, Daughters ofMary
Help of Christians and leaders from all the Provinces of Europe, was a gathering at which once again we were able to experience howthe
charismof
Don Boscois relevant and
"close"to
the young.This
fact alone would be sufficientfor
usto
appreciate the value of the experience ofthe
Confronto. One needsto
addthat this
gathering had been preparedwith
great care andskill

by the SDB and FMAYouth
Ministry
Departments, and broughtout clearly the
leadingrole of the
young people themselves, as Don Bosco wanted. These arethe
obvious elements which always ensure the success ofthis kind
of event.In
thefirst
days of Septemberwith
Fr Adriano Bregolin and some other friends we made the 'Pilgrimage to Santiago'.It
was avery beautiful
experiencein human
andspiritual terms. It
seems
to
me an expressive icon of the journey oflife
and of the faith journey each one of us is called upon to make.In
aninter- view I
gavefor the Provincial Newsletter of the
Provinceof
Le6n, Spain (which provided uswith
logical support during the walk)I
pointed outthat
this walk tests,first
of all, thepilgrim's
physical fitness, teachinghim to
adapthis
own paceto that of
histravelling
companions, providestime
and spaceto
contem- plate nature as one slowly follows the scallop shells (the sign in- dicating thepilgrim's
route) which show the path to be followed, helps one to come to termswith
oneselfin
silence, and very sim- ply invites each one to reflect on one'slife
and to pray. You can very well imagine the joy at reaching the goalwith
so many oth- er pilgrims, and then having the opportunity to say mass on the tomb of the Apostle.On the last Sunday of September
I
met those takingpart in
the Harambde. Afterwards in the Basilica of Mary Help of Chris- tians,
I
had the grace of sending onits
way 140'h Salesian. mis- sionary expedition. This year the number of missionaries, partic-ularly
high, was intendedto
represent another sign of the cele-bration
ofthe
150'h anniversary ofthe
founding ofthe
Congre- gation. An expedition like this is always something beautiful and significantin which
weput into
practicewhat the Lord
Jesus asked of us: to be his witnesses even to the ends of the earth.It
is also the continuation of what Don Bosco began in far off 1875, when he sent his
frrst
Salesian missionaries to Argentina.Between
6 and
14 October wehad the 'intermediate
re-union'
ofthe
General Council,during
which,taking up
againthe study of the Regions, we examined
that
of South Asia. Thisreflection
allowedus to get to know better the state of this
Region, at the moment the mostfruitful
onein
vocationsin
the Congregation, identifying the challenges which have to be faced, assessingthe
available resources and suggestingthe
general outlines for the immediatefuture.
The subjectwill
be taken up againwith
the Provincials of the Regionin
Sri Lanka during the next term.Between
2L
and 26of the
samemonth I went to Pert for the meeting of the Provincials of the Interamerica
Region.Meetings
of this kind at which
theVicar
also takespart,
areintended to
be aform of
accompanimentfor
eachof the
Re- gions.I
already referred to thisin
previous letters.I
shouldlike to underline the fact that the
experienceof the
meetings andtheir
subsequentpractical
consequencesare
seenmore
andmore to
beprofitable for the
method chosen,and enriching
for the Provincials taking part. On the occasion of this meeting,I
also chaired a seminar of updatingwith the
Provincials, the Delegatesfor
Formation and YouthMinistry
and some leaders, onthe
document of theVth
General Conference ofthe Latin- American
Bishopsat
Aparecida.Meetings of this kind
were conductedby Fr Egidio Viganb after the
Conferencesof
theCELAM in
Pueblaand
Santo Domingo.The
purpose was toput the
Congregationin harmony with the Latin American
Church.In
the month of NovemberI
visitedthe
Provinces of Dima-pur
and Guwahati,in India,
which can veryrightly
be consid- ered one ofthe
most successful examplesof the inculturation
of the
Salesian charism and mission. Demonstratingthis
are both the growth of the Churchin this
area of north-east India, andthe
developmentof our
Congregation. Thereis no
doubtthat the
name of Don Bosco islike
a magic wordin this
whole area, theresult
of the missionary stimulus given from the very beginning by Bishop Louis Mathias and all the great missionar- ies responsible for such an exemplary andfruitful

of the Church and for the
faithful inculturation
of the charism, comparableto that
achieved by thefirst
missionariesin
South America. They were confreres who were courageous and enter-prising who made
greatefforts to learn local
languages and cultures. Committed to human development, especially through education, they were always great evangelisers and cultivators of vocations. The recognition given us by the people close to us and by outsiders, by Christians and by non-Christians, by menof the
Government and ofthe
Church,is
confirmationof
howgreat
werethe
epic deedsof the
missionariesin this part of India.
This splendid achievement also makes us reflect on whyin
certain placesthe
Congregation has developed sowell
even among thetribal
groups, whilein
othersit
is such a struggle to establish a local Church andto
have vocationsfor the
Church and for the Congregation.Still in the month of
November,between 15
and22, at Turcifal, in
Portugal,I
preached a Retreatfor
the Provincials, the members of the Provincial Councils and otherinvited
con- freres, from the West Europe Region.I
seems to methat this
is oneof the
specific servicesof animation of the
Rector Major whoin this way
canbetter
communicatehis vision of
conse- cratedlife in
general, and Salesianlife in particular,
and passon his teaching and the lines of government with which
he wants to enlighten and guide the Congregation. PersonallyI
was very happywith the
atmosphere of prayer and reflectionthat
was created.
At
the end of the RetreatI
wanted to go to Fatimato pray to the
Madonna andto entrust to her all
of you, dear confreres,our
workswith the world
of people, adults and the youngwho
movearound them. I cannot hide from you that I felt
a real needto
makethis visit
tothe
Sanctuary sanctified by the presence of Mary.In
conclusion,at the
end of themonth
of November,I
took part in the Bi-Annual and General Assembly of the USG (Union of Superiors General),in
which we reflected on consecratedlife
in Africa.At
the next Assemblies wewill
be reflecting on conse-crated
life in
Europe andI
can assure youthat this
topic arous- es a great deal of interest: we are convincedthat if
consecrated life came tobirth in
Europe and from here developed and spread throughout the world,it
is importantthat it
is re-born here. Asyou can see
this
isin line with the
'Projectfor
Europe' which more and more is also being taken upby
other Congregations.And without further
adoI
move onto
giveyou my
Com-mentary on the Strenna for
2010.*Truly
nothing is more beautiful than to know Christ and to mahehim

2010. Asa real spiritual and pastoral programme, it will help us to
strengthenour
Salesian identity, re-invigorateour
communionof minds
andhearts to
place ourselveswithin the Church
as"disciples and apostles" for the building of the Kingdom and the
transformation
ofthe world.
Today morethan
everthe world
needs
Christ
andhis
Gospel;for this
people are required who make the Kingdom of God the causefor
which they live, as did Jesus; the witness is needed of disciples, new men and women,born not
ofthe "flesh" but
ofthe Spirit;
apostles are required who are seriously engaged in the preservation of creation, in jus- tice,in
solidarity andin
brotherhood and sisterhood amongall
peoples.

After my
appeallast year in which I invited the
Salesian Family to live and act as a "movement" so as to be more visible, more significant and more effectivein its
servicefor
the salva-tion
of the young,in
2010I
shouldlike to
see you animated bythe
samespirit
and involvedin
ajoint
project: proclaiming the Gospel to the young, andin
this way leading them to a personal meetingwith
the Lord Jesus.It
is a question of a word of advice offered to us by the Holy Father himself whoin
aletter
sent to me on the occasion of theXXVI
General Chapter of the SDB, wrote:"May
evangelisation bethe main
andpriority frontier of their
mission today.It
presents many tasks,urgent
challenges,vast fields of activity, but its fundamental
purposeis that of
proposingthat
everyone shouldlive their
humanlife
as Jesus livedit. In
multi-religious situations andin
secularised ones,it
is necessary to
find
new ways of making Jesus known, especial- Iy to the young, sothat
they may discover his perennial fascina- tion".2Therefore, on
the
occasion ofthe
centenary ofthe
deathof Don Michael Rua, most faithful to Don
Boscoand to
his charism,I
shouldlike to invite all
the members of the Salesian Family to become ever more and more disciplesin
lovewith
Je- sus and his enthusiastic apostles and to commitment themselves to the evangelisation of the young. Let us speak to them about Christ,let
ustell
them about our meetingwith Him, let
ustell
His story,without
which there is therisk that
He slipsinto
the realmsof mytholory
and idealism,let
us givethem the
pro- gramme of happiness which He offers usin
the Beatitudes,let
us
tell
them how beautifullife

and how much joy there is in being embraced by
Him
and being drawninto
the cause of the Kingdom of God.The commitment
to
evangelisation flowsfrom the identity of the
disciple whoafter setting out to follow the Lord
Jesusbecome His personal representative and ardent missionary. We
want to take up the challenge of helping the young
to "learn
to look onthis
other personnot
simplywith
my eyes and my feel- ings,but from the
perspective of Jesus Christ".3It
istrue,
we are Salesians and as such we carryout our
mission of evange- lising by educating and of educating by euangelising. This is notjust a
slogannor a
meaningless expression.It indicates the
close
link which
exists between evangelisation and education;without
confusingthe
onewith
theother
and respectingtheir autonomy they are at the
serviceof the building up of the
human personin
orderto bring him or her to the
fullnessof
Christ. Education is genuine whenit
takesinto
account aII thedifferent
characteristicsof the children, of the
adolescent,of
the young person and is clearly directed towardsthe
all-roundformation of the individual,
openinghim up to the
transcen-dent.
Evangelisation onits part
hasa strong
educational di- mension, precisely becauseit
seeksthe transformation of
themind
and heart,the
creation of a new personthe result
of his being conformedto
Christ.The
Strennafor
2010 takesits
cuefrom the
Pauline yearjust
concluded and from the Synod on the Word of God, while westill
await the Pope's post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation, whichwill help
usto proclaim
andto
witnessto the beauty of the
Encounterwith
Christ, the Word of God, who isliving
amongst us.During the
Synod,at which I
hadthe
graceto
be present,I
spoke aboutthe
passagefrom Luke
andthe
disciples on the wayto
Emmaus, seen as a model, from bothits
content andits
method of the evangelisation of the young;it
could be useful to takeit in
hand again and meditate onit.

Here, then, the spiritual and pastoral programme for the year 2010:
"Sif we want to see Jesusrr.
In imitation of Don Rua,
as authentic disciples and zealous apostles
let us bring the Gospel to the young.
Already a good number of the groups of the Salesian Family are
in
harmonywith
this task. By way of exampleI will
give you two passages from the General Chapters of the SDB and of the FMA.The

General Chapter of the Salesians shows its aware- nessof the urgent
needto
evangelise andof the centrality of
proposing Jesus Christ: "We perceive evangelisation as the
prin-
cipal requirement of our mission, awarethat
the young have aright
to have Jesus proclaimed to them as the source oflife
and promiseof
happiness now andin eternity. Our
"fundamental purpose isthat
of proposingthat
everyone should livetheir
hu- manlife
as Jesus livedit.
...At the centre should be the procla- mation of Jesus Christ and of his Gospel, togetherwith

conversion,the
acceptanceof the-faitfr, their taking their
place in the Church; then from this
will
come faith journeys and forms of catechesis,liturgical life

The

Being disciples who welcome
in their
heart the Word of God and apostles whowith joy
passit
onis the
vocationof
every Christian. Thelife
and mission of the Church consists preciselyin this.
Jesus himself began proclaimingthe
Good News of the Kingdomof
God and callingthe
disciplesto
sendthem out
to preach. Not only the Twelve, but all the baptised are called to be disciples who make themselvesfamiliar with
the Word,identify
themselveswith the Lord to the extent of having His
senti- ments, who havethe mind of Christ, they live in
close unionwith
Him, and then become convinced and zealous apostles, sentout in all
areasof life to
bear witnessto the faith, to
explaintheir
hope, to collaborate in the transformation of culture andof
society, to build a world where justice and peace reign, to be alive
to solidarity
among peoples and social groups andfraternity
among all people.
No Christian
canwithdraw
fromthe
vocation and mission.All
of us-
notjust
priests, missionaries or religious-
moved bythe love
that
theLord
hasfor
us andin virtue
ofour
Baptism,are called to be evangelisers. We can respond to
this
mandateof
the Lordin
the family, at work,in
our communities,with
words and deeds,that
iswith
the love we putinto
our actions and our words, making surethat
they are according to the Gospel. Evan-gelising
meansputting in
some yeastwith
such power asto

the
wayof thinking
andthe heart of individuals
and through them the structures of society, sothat
they are morein
harmonywith
God's plan.It
is not a question of an inward look-ing activity;
evangelisingis
launching areal
social revolution, the most profound, the only effective one. This explains whyit
meets
with
so much resistance and opposition, open or hidden.Before
thinking
about the ways and means of evangelising,it
is necessary to have a motive, to be,
that
is, "thosein
love"with
God having experienced his friendship and closeness: "No longer do
I
call you servants,for the
servant doesnot
knowwhat
his master is doing;but I
have called you friends, for allthat I
have heardfrom
my FatherI
have made known toyou" (Jn
15,L5).Between the time of the call and
that
of the sending out there is the time in which the disciples "stay"with
the Lord, to learn his way of life, to learn how tointerpret
personal and universal his-tory
as the history of salvation, to experiencein their
own lives thetruth,
the goodness and the beauty of the message which is entrustedto
them and which they are called uponto
proclaim.In this
regard,this is what I
saidin my
opening remarksat the
bi-annual Assembly ofthe Union of
Superiors General,in
preparationfor the
Synod on:"The
Wordof
Godin the life
and mission ofthe Church". "Only the minister
ofthe
Gospel-
consecrated or lay-
who keeps the Gospel in his heart, makingit the
objectof
contemplation and amotivation
of prayer,will
succeed in keeping
it
on his lips as a treasure to speak about andwill
holdit in
his hands as an inescapable duty to pass on".7In
the beautiful task of welcoming, incarnating and commu-nicating the
Wordof
God,Mary is our mother
and teacher, because-
as Saint Augustine says-
She conceived the Sonfirst
in her
soulthen in her
flesh.In fact in Luke's
gospelMary
is presented as the one who replieswith
extraordinary openness to the message of the Angel: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, Iet'P

be done to me according to yourword"
(Lh 1,38). Mary is the model of the disciple whoin
the face of events she seesbut
doesnot manage to understand keeps all these words and meditates on them in her heart (cf.
Lk
2,Lg). At the beginning of her Son'sministry
at the wedding at Cana, she invites the servants, to "do what he tellsyou"
(Jn 2,5), and during hisministry
she is to be found among the disciples who .hear the word of God and keepit" (Lh
L1,27-28). When the time of the passion arrives, Mary is at the foot of the cross, sharing, to thebitter
end, the abandon- ment, the rejection, and the suffering ofthe
Son, and carefully safeguarding hiswill
and testament: .Women,this
is your son>(Jn
19,25-27).And finally after the resurrection,
she devotes herself to prayerwith
the disciples awaiting the promised HolySpirit
(cf. Acts 1,t4). This then is our model of the disciple andof
the apostle of the Word.3. The task of the disciples is to hear the "desire to
seeJesus"
Precisely because evangelisation is not
just
a message to be proclaimedbut
is the revelation of Godin
Jesusit
is authentic whenit
leadsto
an encounterwith
Jesus and is effective whenit
communicatesthe
salvation which God wantsto
givein
the Son. Therefore evangelisation implies aninner

evangelisation is a personal meeting and a person is evan- gelised precisely when s/he encounters and welcomes the person of Jesus.The evangelist John records
that

way to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast approachedPhilip with

"see Jesus"(Jn
12,2L). Facedwith
such an unexpect- ed request andnot
knowingwhat to
do,Philip
spoke aboutit
to
Andrew and together,"they went
andtold
Jesus". He then realisedthat
the hour, so often delayed, had come forHim
to beglorified. At that
moment when those who werefar
awayfelt the
desireto
seehim,
Jesus knewthat the time
had come to announce his handing over of himselfto
death, thehour
of his glorification, the decisive moment of the salvation of the whole world.Jesus came to the awareness of his hour when he knew
that there
were some Greeks who wantedto
seehim. He
came to know ofit
becausetwo
disciplestold him. Without
realisingit
Philip
and Andrew help Jesusto
knowthis
crucial momentin
his life.Without
these two disciples the Greeks would not have been ableto
showtheir
desireto
seethe Lord; without
them Jesus wouldnot
have knownthat
the moment had arrivedfor his
glorification. Jesus neededthe
disciplesto
recognisein
the desire to been seen by thosefar
away thearrival
of the hourof
his glory.Today too, Jesus needs disciples who succeed
in
recognisingin
peoples' hearts,in
their joys andin their
fears, a desirethat is not
alwaysput into
wordsto
approachHim
and meet Him.What once again urged Jesus to undertake the work of salvation was knowing
that
he was wanted.Only the
disciple who stays close to him can recognise among the many who are lookingfor him
the one who really wantsto find him.
The disciple follows Jesusin
orderto facilitate the
meetingwith him
of those who wantto
seehim. It
isin this
waythat
the disciple of Jesus be- comes his apostle: Jesus needs disciples, companionsin
hislife
and missionin
order to recognise thearrival
of his hour. Bring-ing to him
those whowant to
seehim, the
disciple of Jesus is changedinto
his apostle.Identifying
amongthe many aspirations of
young people nowadaysthe real
desireto
"see Jesus"is for
us, membersof
the
Salesian Family,the motive, if not the only
one,no
less fundamental, to become real disciples of Christ.If
we don't doit, who will present to
Jesusthe
dreamsand the
needsof
the young? Whowill help the
youngto
see Jesus?The
members ofthe
Salesian Family are being calledto listen to the
sighsof
the young to meet Jesus, and at the same time, tointerpret
theworld
ofyouth in
a waythat highlights the
desirethe
young people haveto
draw closeto
Jesus.This is our
way of helping Jesus today to save the young. Andit
isin this
waythat
we be- come his real companions and his apostles.This means
that
the evangelisation of the young has tostart from the practical situations in which they are to
be found giving specialattention to their culture,
deeply marked by the valueof individualism
and self-centrednesswhich
leads them to gather togetherin
groupswith their
peers and keeptheir
dis- tancefrom
theworld
of adults.In this
regard, quite enlighten- ing are the words of BenedictXVI in
his catechesis on 5 August 2009, speaking aboutthe holy
Cur6d'Ars: "If in his time
the"dictatorship of
rationalism"
existed, in the current epoch a sort of "dictatorship ofrelativism"
is evidentin
many contexts. Both seem inadequate responses to the human being'sjustifiable
re- quest to use his reason as a distinctive and constitutive element of his own identity. Rationalism was inadequate becauseit
failed to takeinto
account humanlimitations
and claims to make rea- son alone thecriterion
ofall
things, transformingit into
a god- dess; contemporaryrelativism
humiliates reason becauseit
ar- rives de facto ataffirming that
the human being can know noth-ing with certainty
outsidethe positive scientific field.
Today however, asin that time, man, "a beggar for meaning and
fulfilment", is constantly in quest of exhaustive answers to the basic questions that he never

As regards attitudes towards religion in general and
toChristianity in particular, information
about the young leaves no roomfor
doubt. Keepingtheir
distance, soon giving up con- tact, a sense of irrelevance are the features of the relationshipof young
peoplewith religious institutions, topics and
people.Nowadays
it
is more and more commonto
come across young- sters who have never had contactwith anything
religious, or whose contact has been insufficient for them to understand the question of God, or those who have distanced themselves after an experience which atfirst
had been quite promising.Hearing the
cry explicit
orimplicit,
of the young who wantto
see Jesus meansin
present day circumstances goingout
to those places andlife situations
wherethe
youngsters feel at home, to make clear to themthat
among the most authentic de- sires concerninglife
and happines is hidden the question about the meaning and the searchfor
God.My

Edmundo Vecchi, had dealtwith this situation

young people have is quite varied, al- most kaleidoscopic.But it

Rather it is
incompleteor out of
focus, sometimes quite considerably so.Given a certain mistrust of
institutions
and the image of God they present, and takenfor
granted some ofthe
principlesfor
evaluationtypical of current thinking, there
are nocriteria
toassess objectively the
validity
of the different representationsof
God.
In
taking up one of them therefore a subjective choice seems to prevail. This is not entirely bad:faith
is a free act of thewill
moved
by
grace and enlightened by reason.But
there are cer-tainly
some unbalanced images. God isnot
an object, an image, an interrogator, a relationship and a discoveryin
purelyindivid- ual
terms. As aresult
one has a notably vague conceptof

To be able
to
help youngstersto
see Jesusit
is necessary to know him, to livewith
him, to be one of his.In
other words,it
is not possibleto
be witnesses and apostles of Jesuswithout first

being his disciples.
In
fact, a person does not become an apostleby
wantingto
be one,but
by being called.Philip,
Andrew and the other members of thefirst
apostolic community were calledby
Jesus, oneby
one,by
name, chosenfrom
amonga
large crowd: "those whom he desired, cameto him," twelve, "to
bewith him
and to be sent out to preach" (Mk 3,13-L4). And to gowith
Jesus they had to leave the people who were followinghim
and follow him. Those who are invited to stay
with
Jesus and to preachin
his name do not belong to the group who are lookingfor him;
they arepart
of those who have already methim
and have decided to staywith
him.The
first
mandate the apostle receives, theinitial invitation
addressed to him by the one who calls him, is
to
"stay"with
hisLord. In the
apostolatethis living
together comes before being sent out; companionship come before preaching; personal fideli-ty
isthe
premiseto the
mission.In
fact, thosewill
be sent by Jesus who have livedwith him,
sharing the journey and the re- pose, bread and dreams, successes and disappointments, life and plans. Before the gospel frllstheir
minds and becomes the reasonfor their
laboursit
hasto
have been acceptedinto their
hearts and becomethe
causeof their
joy. Jesus doesnot entrust
his gospel to someone who has not given his life to him (cf. Actst,2l-
22). The
first
ones sent out by Jesus were hisfirst
companions.Because they had been
with him
the people who wanted to know Jesus approached the disciples; the desire to find Jesus led the crowdto
lookfor
those who followedhim.
Only the disciple who liveswith
Jesus canfacilitate
accessto him for
someone who wantshim.
Fromthis
arises theurgent
needthat
young-sters feel
that
they are meeting disciples of Christ whowill
take them toHim,
precisely because they are alwayswith him.
Only authentic disciples can be credible apostles.In
the yearjust
finished the person of Paul helped us to un- derstandthat
beforethe
"gospelof
grace" was proclaimed to everyone, camethe
experienceof the
meetingwith the
RisenOne: Paul was able
to
preachthe
gospelof
God andin
a com-pletely
new way becausethe
Risen One had been revealed tohim
(cf.Gal
l,15-16) on the roadto
Damascus. Fromthis
expe- rience came Paul's plan oflife
"For me to live isChrist"
and his pastoralplan
"Woeto
meif I
do not preachthe
gospel" (7 Cor 9,16).If "Christ is everything for us"
andif "nothing
comes between us and the love ofChrist",
ourlife
then becomes a joy-ful
witness and a proposal to everyone of the meetingwith
Him.5.
Tohelp the young "to
seeJesus"
Finding Jesus doesn't mean immediately meeting him.
"Finding"
Jesusin
somekind of strong religious
experience which produces greatjoy
and enthusiasm doesnot
always lead tofaith,
to an authentic encounterwith
the Lord, because, asin
the parable of the seed (cf.Mk
4), the soilin
whichit
falls is not prepared.In
the encounter, theinitiative
comes from Jesus. "He takes thefirst
step and seeks an encounter. He goesinto
a house, he goesup to
a weIl, where a woman has goneto
draw water, he stopsin front
of a tax collector, he looks up at someone who has climbed a tree, hejoins
someone on a journey. From his words, from what he does, from the person that he is there comes some-thing
fascinatingthat
attracts the person he speaks to.It
is ad-miration,
Iove,trust,
and attraction.For many people
the first
meetingwill
be transformedinto
wanting to listen to him again, to become friendswith
him, to fol- low him. Theywill
sit around him askinghim questions, theywill
help himin
his mission, theywill
ask him to teach them to pray,they will
be witnesses ofhis
happy andhis sorrowful
days.In
other cases, the meeting concludes with aninvitation
to a change oflife"."

The experience is not a different one when one
thinks
of the meeting of Jesuswith
the young. For each one of them the most explosive event occurs when Jesus is seen as the one who gives meaning tolife,
the one toturn
to when seeking thetruth,
the onethrough
whomto
understand a relationshipwith
God andwith
whom tointerpret
the human condition. The most impor-tant thing is to
move onfrom admiration to
knowledge, andfrom
knowledgeto
intimacy,to
love,to
following,to imitation.
The fact remains
that
one cannot "see Jesus",if
He does not"let
himself be seen". No one can come to me, he said, unless the Father who sent me draws him. (cf.Jn
6,44). The desire to meet him, therefore, isnot
enoughto
cometo
thejoy
of recognition;nor is it sufficient to find his
disciplesin
orderto
meet Jesus and to recognisehim
as Lord.The Emmaus account,
the
modelfor the
meeting between the believer and the Word incarnate (cf.Lk
24,13-15), identifies the goal which the believer has to reach, and indicates the pathto
getthere.
The episodeillustrates the faith journey
and de- scribesthe
stageswhich
are alwaysrelevant.
The accountin
Luke offersts
a precise programme for euangelisatioru,in
which is described whoit
is who evangelises and how one evangelises:it
is Jesus who evangelises through his word and the eucharisticgift
of himself walkingwith
the disciples.5.1 The aim of eaangelisation: rneeting Christ in the Chureh
The account begins by
narrating
the fact of two disciplesof
Jesus leaving Jerusalem. Disconsolate over how much had hap- pened three days earlier, they abandon the community, in which however there are some
starting to
saythat
theLord
has been seen alive; thetwo
disciples cannot believe women's gossip (cf.Lh
24,22-23;Mk
16,11).Only at the
endof
thejourney
when they see Jesus repeat the gesture of breaking the bread do theyrecognise him, only to lose sight of him at once and to
return
tothe
community. The unexpected conclusionof
thejourney
to Emmaus wasto find
themselves againwith the
communityin
Jerusalem.The
Risen Onedid not
staywith them,
and they were unableto
remain alone: they returnedto the
community where they encounterChrist
againin
the witness of the Apos-tles:
"Indeedthe Lord
hasrisen
and has appearedto
Simon"(Lk
24,34).This is
acriterion to
assessthe authenticity of
anencounter with Christ: the gift of the community, which
is rediscovered as one's own home, the dwelling place of the Lord,the hearth at which all
those who have seenthe Lord
belong.Re-discovering
the community
andfinding
oneselfin
the Church, the placein
which to live the sharedfaith
is the logical consequence of a personal encounterwith
the Risen One. Out- side the community the proclamation of the gospel seems chat-ter not to
be believed (cf.Lh
24,22-23). Today, as yesterday, or morethan
yesterday, we haveto
dealwith the
obstacles which evangelisation encounters. Thefirst
is disinformation, because not only do people saylittle
about Jesus, they aretrying
to make him disappear from today's culture, from organised society, from personal conscience. His presence is considered irrelevantin
so-ciety and
his
absenceis
seen as an advantage. The second ob- stacle is a purely subjective view of Jesus, who, deprived of his historical reality, becomes more and more a Jesus madeto suit
us, viewed according to our own desires or needs. The
third
ob- stacle is more subtle:in
anattempt at
inter-religious dialogue they wouldtry
to reduce Christ to one among a number of oth- erspiritual
teachers or founders of religions, so as no longer to recognisehim
asthe only
Saviourof all. Finally, there is
the danger,not imaginary but very
commonamong Christians
themselves,of
consideringChrist to
be sowell
knownthat
he has nothing newto
say to us; having become insignificant,it
is no longerworth the trouble
of havinghim
as guide and Lord.The account
in
Luke about the disciples on the wayto
Em- maus tells usthat if
the Risen One had not becometheir

panion
during
thejourney
and at table the two disciples would not have managed to discoverthat
he was alive, nor would they have had again the desire to live together. Let us take good note of this:it
does not matter whether the onereturning
to the com- munity had abandonedit
beforehand;it
is however decisivethat they return
as soon as possible,immediately after
seeing theLord. Only the
one who recoversthe
commonlife
knowsthat
the Risen One waswith him
andwill
recover thejoy
of havingfelt him
near (cf.Lk
24,35.32).One has
to
havedoubts about a form of
evangelisation, which over and above its methods and intentions, does notstart
from the evangeliser'slife in
common, and which does not arise from the joy at having met the Lord in the community.If it
werelike that,
such evangelisationwould not
haveits origin in
ameeting
with the
RisenLord, nor would it
leadto
a meetingwith
him. Those who saw the Risen Lord and atewith
him could not hold on to him for themselvesbut
discover the desire totell
oftheir
lived experience,returning
totheir
community. This is not by chance, but is the proof of a law of Christian life: someone who knows and proclaimsthat
Jesus is Risen livesthat
experi- encein
common.Even though
it
istrue that
one can meet Jesus anywhere, his house, the place where he lives is the Church, the communi-ty
of believers, of those,that
is, who confesshim
astheir
Lord, thefamily
ofhis
disciples, of those who sharelife
and missionwith
him.There is no doubt
that
wereally
haveto work to
correct a distorted image of the Churchthat
many young people can have.Some "speak about
it
affectionately as thoughit
weretheir
ownfamily,
indeedtheir
own mother. Theyknow that in her
and through her they have receivedspiritual
life. Even though they are aware oflimitations, wrinkles
and even scandals, neverthe- lessthat
appears secondary comparedwith the benefits
she brings to the individual and to humanity as the dwelling placeof
Christ
andfrom
where hislight
shines out:in
the effortsto
do good which are observedin
works and individuals,in
the expe- rience of God moved by theSpirit that
is foundin
holiness, the wisdomwhich
comesfrom the
Wordof
God,the
lovewhich unites
and createssolidarity
beyondnational
and continental boundaries, the prospectofeternal
life.Others keep
it
at a distance as thoughit
were somethingthat
hadnothing to
dowith
them, of which they donot
feel a part.They judge
it from the
outside. Whenthey
say"the
Church"they
seemto
bereferring only to
someof her institutions,
to someformulation of the faith or to moral norms which
they don't like.It
is the idea one gets from reading some newspapers.[...J They are mistaken precisely in what constitutes the Church:
its
relationship, indeedits
identificationwith
Christ. For manythis
is atruth that
is not known or in practice forgotten. There are even those who seeit
as a pretext of the Church so as to mo- nopolise the person of Christ,to
control anyinterpretations of him
and to manage the patrimony of images, of thetruth
of the fascinationthat
Christ represents.For the believer, on the other hand,
this
is the fundamental point: the Church is the continuation, the dwelling place, the ac-tual
presence of Christ, the place where he dispenses grace, thetruth
andlife in
theSpirit.

is. TheChurch lives
with the
memory of Jesus, continuesto
meditate and to study his wordwith
all the means available drawing fromit
new significance, re-actualises his presence in its celebrations, seeksto throw
thelight that
comesfrom
his mystery onto
the events and on to the concepts of current day life, taking up and carryingforward
Christ's missionin its totality:
the proclama- tion of the Kingdom and the transformation of the less-than-hu- manliving
conditions. Above all Jesus isits

this is what the Church really is, we have the task of seeing toit
that the young love her as the Mother of their faith, who rais- es them as children of God, who helps themfind their
vocation and mission, who accompanies them along thepath
oflife
and who waits to lead them into the house of the Father. This is what Don Bosco knew how to do in an incomparable way in the educa-tion
andthe
evangelisation of his boysat
Valdocco.Let
us seewhat we can do today for the young people who want to see Jesus.

Tvlethodof evangelisation: walking together
The probable reason why the Emmaus episode is so relevant lies
in
its being so close to ourspiritual
situation today.It
is easy toidentify
oneselfwith
these disciples who arereturning
home beforethe
sun goes down, weighed downwith
thoughts of sad- ness.In the
experience of thetwo
disciples on the wayto
Em- maus we find the necessary steps to be taken in the education to thefaith
of the young, the Easter experience which accompanies the beginning of lifein
community and apostolic witness.Starting point: going to Jesus
with
one's disappointmentsIt
wasnot
so muchwhat
had happenedin
Jerusalem"in
those days", as
their
deep personalfrustration that
led totheir
leavingfor
Emmaus. They had livedwith him
andthat living together had
awakenedin them
hopesof
somethingbetter:
it
seemed "he would bethe
one who would liberateIsrael"
(Lk 24,19-21). instead,his
death onthe
cross hadburied all their
hopes and
their faith. It
was morethan
logicalthat
they would feel the failure, and feelthat
they had been deceived. Nowadays young people havelittle
in commonwith
these disciples; but per- haps they have nothing morein
common than thefrustration of their
dreams, the fatiguein their
lives and the disenchantmentin
discipleship.It is not worth it, they often think, following
Jesus:
