- Areas of interest

Taxonomy, biology and ecology of the zoobenthos, with particular focus on Porifera and Cnidaria. His scientific activity is developed in the frame of both national and international projects, not only in the Mediterranean area but also in the polar and tropical ones. In particular his research is addressed on the interaction between biological and mineral systems considering both erosive (bioerosion) and constructive processes (biomineralization), on the effects of climate change on the fenology of marine organisms, also in the mesophotic zone.

- Recent/Current projects

Coordinator of the EU projects Monitoring Mediterranean MPAs (ITN grant 290056) and GREEN BUBBLES (RISE grant 643712) on diving activity sustainability. He participated in the EU project MERCES on the restoration of damaged marine habitats and in the Adriatic Sea Recovery Project to recover Vunerable Marine Ecosystems and Essential Fish Habitats. He is currently involved in the Interreg MED MPA-engage and the BlueBio MEDSPON.
