AUSTRALIA

Australia is a unique and diverse country in every way - in culture, population,

climate, geography, and history. from articles on specific topics about

Australian history and culture

Australia's first inhabitants, the Aboriginal people, are believed to have

migrated from some unknown point in Asia to Australia between 50,000 and

60,000 years ago.

While Captain James Cook is credited with Australia's European discovery in

1770, a Portuguese possibly first sighted the country, while the Dutch are

known to have explored the coastal regions in the 1640s.

The first European settlement of Australia was in January 1788, when the

First Fleet sailed into Botany Bay under the command of Captain Arthur

Phillip. Originally established as a penal colony, by the 1830s the number of

free settlers was increasing. Transportation of convicts to the eastern colonies

was abolished in 1852 and to the western colonies in 1868.

Australia is an island continent and the world's sixth largest country (7,682,300

sq km).Lying between the Indian and Pacific oceans, the country is

approximately 4,000 km from east to west and 3,200 km from north to south,

with a coastline 36,735 km long.

Canberra is Australia's capital city. With a population of approximately

380,000 people and situated in the Australian Capital Territory, Canberra is

roughly half way between the two largest cities Melbourne and Sydney.

Australia has 19 listed World Heritage properties. Australia is also famous for

its landmark buildings including the Sydney Harbour Bridge; its ancient

geology, as well as for its high country.

QUEENSLAND

THE SUNSHINE STATE

• Queensland ,’ the sunshine state’ , which is the second largest state in the Australia. It was named after her highness Queen victoria. According to the 2016 Sensex stats , the population of the state is 4,750,500. it is the third populous state in the country.

• Its first inhabitants are Aboriginals and Torres strait islanders. It was first discovered and brought to the world by a Dutch navigator Willen Janszoon in 1606, he first explored at the west coast of the cape york peninsula near present day Weipa. Until the establishment of a penal colony at Brisbane in 1824 by John Oxley the state was the part of New South Wales. • On 6thJune, 1859,it was formed as a separate colony from NSW under the witness of Queen

Vitoria. Brisbane was named as the capital city of the state on 10thDec 1859. Bowen was the

first governor general of Queensland.

• Apart from other states Queensland has significant variations in climate across the state. Low rainfall and hot humid summers are typical for the inland and west, a monsoonal "wet" season in the far north, and warm, temperate conditions along the coastal strip. Elevated areas in the south-east inland can experience temperatures well below freezing in mid-winter. The climate of the coastal strip is influenced by warm ocean waters, keeping the region free from extremes of temperature and providing moisture for rainfall.

• Queensland is a land of many tourist attractions , natural areas of beauty and plenty of beaches along the coastal stretch. Sunshine coast and gold coast are the two major site seeing places with popular beaches . Apart from that, it has numerous places to explore like

sanctuaries, parks, mountains, waterfalls, mountain peaks , lookout points and many more. On top of it, it has the worlds famous and the only natural reef, the great barrier reef. Queens land is the upmost multicultural state among the others. It accommodated and still doing in

accepting gensuine entrants through various entries like migration, student and refugee visas.

The City

Brisbane

A river curving and curling its way around the landscape makes Brisbane one of the most unique capital cities in Australia. Brisbane came into being long before the state of Queensland was established, when intrepid Surveyor General John Oxley named the river he discovered after the Governor of New South Wales – Thomas Brisbane – in 1823.

Before European settlement in 1824, Aboriginal clans, namely Jagera and Turrbal, lived along the Brisbane River. It is not known how long they resided in this area but it is believed Aboriginal tenure in Australia dates back about 40,000 years.

The first convict jail was built in Redcliffe in 1824 and that was moved to the site of the present-day CBD in 1825. Officials believed the natural bend in the river provided an effective barrier against escape.

Civilian occupation of the area began in 1842, and by the late 1880s Brisbane became the main site for commerce, and the capital-to-be began to develop distinct

architectural features and culture.

With an abundance of sunshine and laid-back lifestyle, Brisbane quickly drew people eager to settle in its environs. The city grew steadily over the years and a turning point in its advancement was during World War II when it housed the main allied

headquarters in the South Pacific for Australian and American service personnel The post-war population boom brought a spurt in industry and Brisbane staked a claim as the third-largest city in Australia.

Despite its rapid progress, Brisbane was often seen as lagging culturally behind Sydney and Melbourne. But two landmark events in the 1980s brought about a major change and accelerated Brisbane towards Australia’s new world city it is today.

The Commonwealth Games came to Brisbane in 1982, and this resulted in a massive injection of new infrastructure and sporting facilities. Then the eyes of the world turned to Brisbane in 1988 and thousands of visitors flocked to Expo 88. The subsequent birth of South Bank on the Expo site has resulted in a thriving cultural hub and Brisbane is more than matching it with its southern counterparts.

Brisbane is Queensland’s state capital city with population over 2.3 million which ranks 3rdthe most populated city in Australia just after Sydney and Melbourne. The

population of Brisbane account for 19% of the national population. Brisbane is one of the oldest cities in Australia founded upon the ancient homelands of the

indigenous Turrbal and Jagera peoples. The size of Brisbane is 15,826 km²

Brisbane’s Floods

It also receives attention for its damaging flood events, most notably in 1974 and 2011.An extreme form of Bribane’s tropical summer rainfall was experienced in the floods of January 2011, which were serious enough to be reported worldwide. Three-quarters of the state of Queensland was declared a disaster zone, with 20,000 houses in Brisbane flooded.

House styles

Many houses look similar to others in shape, scale, structure, material, detail and composition. When similarities are greater than differences, those houses may be given style names. As some styles were more popular at certain times than others, they may also be grouped by period.

Some of the most popular or fashionable styles for each period are sketched here, and elaborated in references.

These apply to single detached houses as well as semidetached houses or duplexes, terrace or row houses, flats or

apartments and dwellings attached to business premises.

However, some houses are such a mix of styles either by design or renovation that they can only be called hybrids. Moreover, most styles begin and continue for at least a decade before and after their era of popularity, and some are revived later.

That applies particularly to the tradition of timber-and-tin housing in Queensland in contrast with the more fashionable styles derived from architectural practice further afield. Though this vernacular stream began in the Colonial period, it

diversified and thrived until the Postwar era, to be revived in the 1980s.

This means it might be easy to identify the style of house, and approximately when it was constructed.

• Concept of patient hotels was first noticed in the

Scandinavian countries. It was first came into

existence in the year 1994 at Nottingham city

hospital , U.K. the concept is very popular in

Sweden, Norway and Finland.

• Medi hotels first stepped into Australia in the year

2002. it’s first started at St. Vincent hospital,

Melbourne with 10 bed and later on gradually

increased its services in the following years.

• A patient hotel provides accommodation for

patients, and often their family, who need to be

close to a hospital, but do not need a hospital bed.

They are usually in the grounds of a hospital, and

are used by people who are recuperating or awaiting

treatment.

• Patient

hotels

are

common

in Finland, Sweden and Norway. The first in the

UK was opened in 1994 at Nottingham City

Hospital. The Coxa center in University College

Hospital Tampere, Finland for joint replacement

makes extensive use of patient hotels and has a very

high rate of day case surgery. NHS England is

reported to be considering the possibilities of using

them to ease demand on hospital beds, including

provision for the 30,000 patients each year who are

kept in hospital despite being well enough to be

discharged.

• University College London Hospitals NHS

Foundation Trust uses the Cotton Rooms Boutique

Hotel, which is funded by the UCLH charity to

house some patients, as even in central London

they are less than half the cost of a hospital bed.

• If regional patients are transferred to a Medihotel

for their last 2 days of their hospital stay:

• • 54 tertiary beds would be freed up every day

in 2017-18.

• • 5,262 more patients could be treated in our

hospitals each year.

6 9,000 bricks were purchased to y construct the first reservoir. When complete, it measured 18x9 metres. It held 570,000 litres of water, 4.1 metres deep. The outer walls were 35 centimetres thick and the interior was divided into nine squares by arched brick walls

During the 1980s conservation work concentrated on the nearby Old Windmill Tower. Council has received a variety of suggestions for reusing the reservoir buildings, including museums and restaurants, however, poor access, fire risk and ventilation issues have hampered potential redevelopment. Restoration work was undertaken in 2009 as part of Queensland’s 150th anniversary celebrations. This work, which included the replacement of the roof, has increased the potential for public access. The use of the large reservoir as an underground venue for opera was the first test of sensitive reuse for the reservoirs, and the first time the public has been able to access this space – constructed more than 130 years ago to store water for Brisbane.

These unassuming structures located behind the Old Windmill Tower in Observatory Park played a vital role in the provision of fresh water to Brisbane from 1871 until

decommissioned in 1962.

Spring Hill Neighbourhood Plan

Spring Hill is located on the doorstep of Brisbane’s city centre and is the most central inner-city neighbourhood. It is surrounded by many of the city’s major cultural and entertainment precincts and employment and education centres. It is fortunate in having access to Brisbane’s major transport services and several of the city’s most valued public open spaces.

A globally competitive economy Brisbane’s city centre is growing. The City Centre Master Plan 2014 identifies Spring Hill as one of four precincts in the inner-city that will support the growth and expansion of the city centre.

Access to high-frequency transport infrastructure

Spring Hill is near some of Brisbane’s major transport services. However, access to many of these services is harder than it needs to be due to poor pedestrian connections. Small-scale improvements to pedestrian connections around the edge of Spring Hill will make these services more accessible.

Brisbane’s first suburb

Spring Hill includes many places of heritage value. The area contains sites of significance to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including Victoria Park. In the early years of the Brisbane settlement Boundary Street formed part of the town limits, within which Aboriginal people were forbidden after 4pm every day and all day Sunday. The area contains many

buildings from the 1800s, including the convict-built Windmill Tower, which is Queensland’s oldest building, and the Spring Hill Baths, which were Brisbane’s first in-ground public baths. There is an opportunity to

"House and Suburban Histories from South East Queensland." (13 June 2017.).

Built in 1828, this structure is Queensland’s oldest standing building and is one of only two surviving convict built structures in the state, the other being the Commissariat Store in William Street. John Oseland, a convict sent to Moreton Bay in 1827 and a skilled miller, was tasked with building the windmill to grind wheat and grain for the settlement. On completion however, the windmill’s sails failed to turn. Just one month later, Oseland escaped from the convict settlement and was never seen again.

Under the direction of the strict Commandant, Captain Patrick Logan, a separate timber treadmill was constructed on the side of the mill that followed the standard design used throughout British penal settlements at the time. Used as a form of punishment for unruly convicts, it was also a reliable means of crushing grain. Up to sixteen men at a time worked on the treadmill from sunrise to sunset, with only two or three hour breaks in the middle of the day depending on the heat.

After the closure of the penal settlement in 1839, the Windmill Tower remained largely unused until it became the Telegraph Signal Station in 1861.

. His study tour culminated in the report, Cities in the Sun, published in 1963, which detailed energy efficient and environmentally friendly design methods that were better suited to Queensland’s climate than the prevailing European styles emerging in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Climate, geometry and innovative construction techniques were the hallmarks of Trotter’s architecture.

In addition to practice, Trotter was a lecturer at the Queensland Institute of Technology (now Queensland University of Technology) for 19 years. He was also involved with the Queensland Chapter Council of the Australian Institute of Architects with a particular interest in architectural education.

In 1999, Trotter retired from practice and in 2012, he was awarded a Life Fellowship by the Institute for his five decades of contribution to Australian architecture.

Trotter’s legacy carries on through his sons, Mark and Paul Trotter who are current directors of Fulton Trotter

Stephen Trotter, a former partner and

director of Queensland architecture

practice Fulton Trotter Architects has passed away on 30 July 2015, aged 84. Trotter joined the practice, previously known as Fulton Collin Job in 1951 and was made a partner in 1962. He designed some of Queensland’s most iconic and enduring buildings including International House and Schonell Theatre at the University of Queensland, Tower Mill Hotel, Twin Towns Services Club and Club Banora.

In 1962, Trotter was awarded the national Sisalcraft travelling scholarship which he used to spend three months in subtropical

Dennis, Peta, Avery, Tracey, & Whitman, Paula (2004)Cool: The 60s Brisbane house.School of Design and Built Environment, Q.U.T., Brisbane , Qld. Climatic design was an emerging field of study during the early sixties. ln 1963, the Sisalkraft Research Scholarship. a national prize given by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects to enco~rage ground-breaking research in the field of architecture, was awarded to Brisbane architect Steve Trotter. His project was to research climatic design and he embarked on a world tour, taking in the countries of Malaysia. India, Persia, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Florida and Hawaii in the U.S.A. and Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro in South America.34 This research was considered so important that instead of the usual report, a book was produced, titled "Cities in the Sun". Trotter examined the vernacular building practices of the. Countries visited and found that primitive societies built structures that were ideally suited to the climate. In the book's conclusion, Trotter called for a greater communication of ideas on climatic design, noting that "Very little has been written on the physical, historical and psychological aspects of tropical design by architects brought up in tropical environments. Most work in this field has been carried out by European born and trained architects carrying out commissions in tropical regions". 35 Trotter emphasized that northern Australia needed to find its own solutions for the design of buildings sensitive to the climate. He asserted that even though Australia did not have centuries of suitable vernacular buildings to draw upon. we should not look to unsuitable northern European prototypes as a solution. Trotter acknowledged the importance of understanding the climate in his own work: ''The strength in my practice has always been every building I've done is related to the climate. My philosophy is that all buildings grow out of climate, house building in particular; all buildings I believe do, but house building in particular. If you live outside, its lovely to live outside, the weather is beautiful; it must express itself in your buildings"

tower mill hotel draws from his studies of overseas responses to tropical architecture. The circular floor plan is a response to the opportunity for 360-degree views of the city and draws from the adjacent million site, which still exists to this day. Similar to other projects of Stephen's most notably international house.

Tower mill features a repetitive floor plate that helps reduce the project cost and construction time. Additionally tower mill hotels is immediately recognizable as a trotter design from the passive design principles evident within the structure. Large verandahs and a unique roof design are utilized to control heat gain within the building.

Tower mill is recognized as a significant Queensland building as is included in the Brisbane architecture heritage walk.

innovation, flexibility, adaptability and sustainability. The design proposal had to have bamboo as the dominant material as this is an investigation into innovative possibilities for bamboo as a material for tall construction design as support or covering (cladding) for such structures

• Concept shows a great combination of strong ideological basis and

a pragmatic, well presented architectural solution that is

exceptionally sensitive and inspiring. It is a successful

implementation with proper relation to the place, good solutions for

safety and functionality, great response to the climatic conditions of

Singapore with sun protection with bamboo, stack effect, natural

cross ventilation, water reuse system, analysis of regeneration of

whole building, smart structural concept with good organization of

space. This project exhibits the quality of a real bamboo icon and a

landmark for the city of Singapore.

Project description

The idea of medi-hotel or patient hotel is booming in cities of Australia .the

government is allocating funds and private business hotel are finding good

scope of investment in Medi –hotel .

The main concept of patient hotel is to provide accommodation for patients

and often their family, who need to be close to a hospitals ,but do not need a

hospital bed .

As Australia Is widely spread and each cities are too far from one another

comparatively with Europe.

The travel ,accommodation and medical cost for patient would be relatively

high when a patient would choose to stay in a hospital or a private hotel.

Patient hotel will provide the patient to skip to stay in the hospital and save

money by avoiding private hotels.

The doctors will visit few hours to check the patient conditions and nurses and

other staff will be available 24x7 in the hotel .

The Medi-hotel will provide a luxury of being in hotel under medical

supervision and feeling safe.

The Metro tower mill is located in Wickham terrace ,spring hill just adjacent to

Brisbane city. The typography of the city, where building is located has a very

precious and reasonable history about why it is located at the spring hill

,Wickham terrace.

Going to past the spring hill is located at the highest terrain of the Brisbane.

Spring hill was one among the water supply the city rely on. Boundary street is

a racist policy of separating European arrivals from the jaggera and turbal

peoples. spring hill is a oldest residential of Brisbane

The health care was mostly provided in the spring hill has it will have a fresh air

,water and cool breezes

It is fortunate in having access to Brisbane major transport services and several

of the city most valued public open spaces.

Over time ,hospitals and medicl practices began to dominate the Wickham

terrace street and since world war II /Wickham terrace has been noted its

private medical specialists ( similar to Harley street in London ).

(64)

The project site is surrounded by main heritage and highly recognised buildings

like Brisbane private hospital ,old wind tower mill, wickham terrace park and

spring hill reservoir services .

A Brisbane private hospital belongs to one of the most prominent Australian

health care groups.

Old wind mill is currently significant as the oldest surviving European structure

in Queensland .it is a reminder of the early difficulties encountered in

establishing the small convict settlement that developed into the present city of

Brisbane.

Spring hill service reservoir was main reservoir station 130 years ago.

Later in 1962 it is abandoned as would not able to supply new high rise building.

Now restoration programs are done to make the it to restaurant and museums

etc.

The Wickham terrace park is oldest park in the Brisbane city,it gain its

importance as it has different typography.

This above reasons illustrates the importance of site and the main advantage of

the project is ,it is a existing 3stared hotel. Design by Stephen trotter and

consider as one of this best passive design building .

(65)

The added section was studied in a manner that it should provide more view

towards the park and the city simultaneously adding fresh air and cool breezes into

the building .

The structure itself leans more towards a conservationist point of view where the

demolished structural elements are kept to a minimum and the new structure is

limited mostly to the original stage and back of the theater

The new block adds up the spaces of the building you reach the economical needs

of the increasing population.

The design satisfies the feed back of the existing building low ceiling height ,no

ventilation for stair case providing more shared areas .

And manage to give its past elegant providing a look out point on the top of the

building .

(66)

Ambition

Metro hotel cannot follow the development of the city technology social lift and

lack of ventilation into the core.(allowing daylight and ventilation ,light well,

service)

Back ground .

It was a highest building in Australia

Passive design ,

Ventilation ..circular plan , relation to surroundings

Retaining as the highest building

Intention

To make use of the existing building ,providing social spaces and shared spaces

at every 2 levels

Providing outdoor spaces with shades and incorporate automated system at

restaurant and stair cases.

Strategy

To provide view for patients

Letting natural lighting and ventilation

Green environment into interiors

Ideas

Opening the core of the building

Planning strategy

council, city. "New World City Design Guide - Buildings That Breathe." (19 January 2017).

Operable Windows

Operable windows are located, oriented and designed to capture cooling breezes, facilitate cross ventilation and allow the passage of daylight while reducing unwanted heat transfer. The placement of these needs to be considered in the context of building setbacks and separation to allow the penetration of light and air through the city.

Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation is one of the most effective ways to reduce the energy consumption of both apartments and commercial buildings. The inclusion of natural or hybrid ventilation systems, including stack ventilation, introduces fresh air into closed internal environments. Hybrid or mixed ventilation systems commonly use natural ventilation when the external conditions allow, but switch to full mechanical systems when external conditions are not optimal due to temperature, humidity, noise or pollution.

The new facade comes from the idea

of having a layered design composed

of a transparent material covered by a

light structure with its own rhythm. In

order to find out this rhythm a study

was made using the original existing

language of metro tower mill hotel and

then reinterpreted to a cleaner and

more simple sequence of solids and

voids. This relation between the

proposed and the existing one is

essential mainly because of direct

contact that the building has with its

surroundings so there has to be some

sense of understanding of identity to

the site.
