SOMMARIO
ABSTRACT
The thesis has been developed at the Design Dept. of Nuovo Pignone GE Oil and Gas, Massa’s Plant, whose main products are the reactors for oil refinery.
The aim of the thesis is to examine the new 2007 edition of Section VIII Division 2 of ASME “Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code” and to compare it with the former 2004 edition, in order to understand exactly which changes refer to the Company’s interest and how such changes may affect both the design and production of the reactors manufactured there.
The thesis shortly explains the general design problems of the Unfired Pressure Vessels (UFPV) as well as the relating present Codes.
Moreover, the general differences between the two editions of the ASME Code are also shown. The Parts about design by rules, stress analysis and fatigue study, as well as the requirements of the materials, are accurately analyzed, compared and explained.
In the new Code, a clear trend to a more detailed and rigorous design has been noticed, this to reduce both thickness and weight of the components.
To support such analysis, a practical execution of a reactor design has been made according to both editions and many calculation sheets have been completed to this end; following the new Code version a weight reduction of about 16% has been obtained.
For what concerns the design by rules, the materials, the data nameplate, the Manufacturer’s Design Report, on request of the Company, some tables of direct comparison between the two editions have been drawn.
