We understand from the Italian Society of Emergency Medicine (SIMEU) that the job description of the UO Pronto Soccorso Presidio Spedali Civili di Brescia seeks interest only from specialists in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care and we write to express our great concern that specialists in Emergency Medicine are not being considered for this post.

We have also been advised that Italian law specifically precludes specialists in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care from working full-time in Emergency Departments and it is therefore difficult to understand how they can nonetheless be expected to undertake the clinical direction of such departments and become responsible for the supervision of young doctors and the delivery of high quality training programmes.

Italy is one of the majority of EU countries which recognise Emergency Medicine as a primary specialty with a minimum of five years of structured training according to the principles

determined by the UEMS Section & Board of Emergency Medicine. These principles have been endorsed by the full Council of UEMS and are not compatible with the decision to seek applications from another specialty for this important post as Director of the Emergency Department in Brescia.

We very much hope that the advertisement will be withdrawn and be replaced by a more appropriate job description.
