Are you one of those who think that life is so small? Do you really think that it is restricted to what you already know? Your family, your friends, your city and your country?

Well, life is much bigger than you think. And the European Commission has designed the European Voluntary Service (EVS) project to help you realize it, to make you feel alive and active: an active citizen of Europe, an active citizen of the world.

In the following pages, you can find tips and testimonies of the 2° groups

of EVS volunteers within the project “Able Like you III”, a 24-month

project co-funded by the Erasmus + programme (KA1 – Youth mobility),

coordinated by CESIE.

Experience Life Abroad

Becoming a volunteer in a foreign country will enable you to experience life abroad, to plunge yourself into a new culture, a new way of life. You will become familiar with their habits, cuisine, traditions, customs, religion and you will have the chance to learn their language!

Let's see this experience as a window. A window to a new world: enjoy it, learn from it and take this experience with you.

It was six months ago when I flew from Barcelona to Palermo. Honestly, before coming to Sicily for a 9-month EVS project at CESIE, I didn't know much about Sicilian culture, a part from some films or books on Mafia phenomenon. However, I discovered that Palermo is a really open and intercultural city, crowded with volunteers and friendly communities strongly connected to Sicilian context.

Palermitani have a secret: they can easily make you feel at home. Palermo is a city where people love to be in the streets and share their cultural heritage. You might find yourself sipping a beer with some friends and sharing the table with strangers, and, after a while, talking with them about your life as if they were your childhood friends.

When you feel comfortable in your new city and context, you have opened up half of that window.

Develop Yourself

This experience will help you realize who you are, and who you want to become. It will teach you how to listen to yourself, to your needs and desires; how to overcome difficulties in life and pursue your goals; how to be independent and responsible; how to stand up for your rights and for the rights of the others; how to be alert; how to respect yourself and the world around you.

European Voluntary Service gives you the space, the time and the tools to reflect about yourself and understand better who you are. This experience will help you realize much about your behavior, your good and bad sides...about who you are and what you want. It will help you understand your mistakes and fix it.

Work as a Volunteer

Mobility projects provide you with personal experiences, social, practical and other soft skills and capacities valuable not only for your personal, but also for your professional path. Somehow, they guide you through your future career and occupation, not to mention that they are a big plus for your CV!

I didn't regret my decision of participating in a project targeted at disabled people.

Even though on my very first day at work, I still had fears, I discovered they had disappeared by the end of the day. There are a lot of nice people there: it's a great experience to deal with people with disabilities and all the workers are extremely helpful and patient. We play games, we carry out skill development sessions, we make ornaments and gifts and we organize shows and create choreographies for different holiday festivals. This great experience in Sicily has changed my life. My self-esteem and teamwork skills have improved a lot. This project taught me self- sufficiency and helped me overcome my fears.

Explore a New Country

A great part of volunteering abroad is about exploring: the culture, the food, the city and the country that host you: not as a tourist, but as a native. Travelling around and living as a foreigner in another country is not always easy, especially in the beginning. But this is the challenge and the motive to continue exploring, learning, realizing...and starting to speak in another language!

The other important part of volunteering is the city where you live your experience.

After these seven months, I must say that Palermo has become my home, a place where I spent unforgettable moments, sometimes it was hard but I’ve always thought that bad times can teach you a lot about yourself. Sicily has everything you might desire: friendly and open people who are willing to help you, a spectacular climate to enjoy in its incredible beaches, natural reserves and landscapes, and delicious food!

Make Friends

Volunteering is all about meeting people different than you - and yet so similar! Although frustrating at times, it will teach you a lot about others' behavior and about yours. Getting to know them, understand them and trying to put up with all those people will make you more patient, more

"socially wise", more tolerant...and certainly with more friends!

Coming here was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my entire life, I will never regret it. Since I’ve started living here, I met so many awesome and interesting people, made new friends all over Europe and worked every day in an amazing cooperative, made of great people who really give everything they have in order to make people happier. Every morning the guys at the centre welcome you with a big smile and a loud “Buongiornooo!”. They’ve been growing together as a big family for such a long time. That’s also why nobody there calls the centre “La Fraternità”, but

“Casa Famiglia” (Family House).
