Bombardier Transportation and Bozankaya Sign Strategic Cooperation Agreement for Local Manufacturing in Turkey

• Bombardier to work with local partner Bozankaya for production of high speed trains in Turkey for the Turkish rail market

Ankara, Turkey– Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation and Turkish based

transportation manufacturer Bozankaya Inc, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening their strategic partnership in the development of high speed trains for the Turkish rail market. The agreement was signed in Ankara, Turkey, by Mr Murat Bozankaya,

President of Bozankaya Group Companies and Furio Rossi, Managing Director Turkey, Bombardier Transportation, in the presence of the Canadian Ambassador to Turkey, Azerbaidjan, Georgia and Turkmenistan, the Honourable John Holmes. Aytunç Günay, Bozankaya Board Chairman, Halil Tufan Özkan and Nezih Erturk Bombardier Turkey Sales Directors and the senior officials of the two companies also attended the meeting.

According to the agreement, both parties agree to work together in the context of an expected invitation to tender from the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) to develop and produce high speed trains. Turkey is eager to acquire quality high speed trains to operate on their newly developed tracks connecting Istanbul to the capital of Ankara, as well as for the entire Turkish high speed rail network.

Bombardier Transportation’s high speed and very high speed competency is known world-wide.

The company has accumulated over 20-years’ experience in the high speed sector and has participated in the delivery of over 850 trains and vehicles for high speed and very high speed applications.

Furio Rossi, Managing Director Turkey for Bombardier Transportation said, “Turkey has a clear vision of the critical role rail plays in sustainable economic development and is making strategic investments necessary to ensure that vision is realized. Turkey has stated it will invest over 45 billion USD for rail products and infrastructure. We at Bombardier see great potential in these plans and are pleased to have Bozankaya as a strategic partner. We are looking forward to working together in providing innovative solutions to Turkey. With Bombardier’s know-how of engineering and transfer of technology, and Bozankaya’s expertise in manufacturing vehicles both locally and internationally, we will succeed in providing the best possible vehicles for Turkey, made in Turkey.”

Furio Rossi also confirmed that if the bidding is won, there will be an investment of 100 million USD to be made and stated that “Investment details have been prepared with a collaborative process between the two firms, by also taking the facility, machines and equipment into account to enable the high speed train to be in accordance with the Turkish tender standards.

2/3 Mr. Bozankaya who has also expressed his opinions during the press meeting, stated that;

“Bozankaya has realized the manufacturing of more than 2300 trams in Germany and the United States. These vehicles manufactured by Bozankaya are currently in service in Bergen, Potsdam, Bochum, Mainz, Graz, Lyon, Paris in Europe and at Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Houston, Charlotte, Norfolk and Atlanta in the United States. We are also breaking new grounds with our innovative vehicles. We have realized the production of Turkey’s first home product Trambus, 100 percent low-floor Tram and the first electric bus that will transport passengers in Turkey. We are the first and the only electric bus manufacturer in Germany.”

Mr Bozankaya continued by stating: “In Bombardier, we have found a very complementary partner and together we can enable the Turkish people to get to their destinations in a quick and

comfortable, reliable and modern mode of transit.”

Bozankaya Board Chairman Aytunç Günay expressed that; “Currently, there are 12 high speed trains in service throughout Turkey. Considering the high-speed train lines that are under

construction or the ones that are nearly finished, we are predicting that there will be a need for at least 200 additional high-speed trains. The statements made by official authorities also suggest that there is a preparation for bidding this project. We are realizing this partnership to join forces that can best respond to this need.

Günay has also emphasized that the first phase preparation is for the set of 80 high-speed trains, which exceed 2 billion Euros in value. “We estimate that this number will increase to 200 vehicles in the future biddings. With this partnership, our goal is to bring this technology to Turkey. In this context, Bozankaya and Bombardier will make a significant technology transfer to Turkey with their investments. With this partnership, we will have realized another investment. We are predicting an investment on a brand new location and a new organization for the manufacturing of high speed trains.”
