the job has been done at IAC (Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias) In La Palma , Canary Islands, (Spain).

[1996-1999] Ph.D. in Physics at University of Lecce. Discussed the thesis on February the 22nd 1999. The title: " High altitude atmospheric shower detection techniques for gamma-ray Astronomy".

[1999-2000] Three trimestral contracts with University of Lecce by ARGO-YBJ collaboration.

[2000] 4 year post-doc grant by INFN to realize FRONT-END electronics and relative ON- LINE control in the ARGO-YBJ collaboration.

[2001] Assistant Professor position in Physics at Lecce University.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:

Cosmic Rays physics, Gamma-Ray Astronomy. Expert on gaseous detectors (MWPC and RPC), front end electronics, DAQ, data analysis and MC simulations.

[1992] Started an experimental thesis in the CLUE collaboration. The activity concerned the detection of UV Cherenkov Light. The idea was to extend the sensibility and

duty cycle of a Cosmic Ray Cherenkov Detector using a photocathode sensitive in UV. My principal activity was to build and test a MultiWire Proportional Chamber sensitive to UV photons.

[1993-1996] Within the CLUE collaboration I participated to the installation of a matrix of 9 UV Cherenkov telescopes at the “Observatory of Roque de Los Muchachos” in La Palma Canary Islands, to data taking and analysis The activity is well documented in the following publications:

Alexandreas, D. et al. "Status report on CLUE", Nuclear Inst. and Methods in Physics Research, A 360 (1-2) , pp. 385-389 (1995)

Alexandreas, D. et al., "The CLUE experiment operating with 4 telescopes in La Palma", Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: 409 (1-3) , pp. 488-491 (1998)

[1996-1998] In this period I get my PhD at Lecce University. The work was a MC study on a combined technique of a Cherenkov Telescope Array and a full coverage carpet made by RPCs to . The previous experience with the CLUE collaboration was combined with the new experience with ARGO-YBJ, an Italian-chinese collaboration for the realization of an high altitude (Tibet, 4300 m asl) and full coverage detector made by RPC to detect VHE cosmic rays (100 GeV - 100 TeV) and suitable for TeV Gamma ray Astronomy. The Combination of the two

techniques allows to improve the sensitivity to TeV Gamma Ray Sources. This study was useful to both collaborations. The results are published in the following works:

G. Marsella PhD thesis: " High altitude atmospheric shower detection techniques for gamma-ray Astronomy".

Bartoli, B. et al., "Shower reconstruction in the CLUE experiment", Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: 461 (1-3) , pp. 311-313 (2001)

[1999-2001] In this three years I get various grants from University of Salento and INFN to continue the activity with the ARGO-YBJ collaboration. I developed a System to test the 600 TDCs that were needed for the timing measurement of the 18000 pads of the detector with 1 ns time resolution. I developed a system based on a VME, controlled first by Labview and later by a Linux CPU, like the final DAQ system of ARGO- YBJ, in oder to develop in the same time some important routines for DAQ Online Control and data taking. I also developed the routines for the data decoding of the official Analysis program of the collaboration. This work is well documented in many internal notes and manuals of the ARGO-YBJ collaboration

[2001-2013] In 2001 I have been engaged as Professor Assistant at the University of Salento. I essentially devoted my research activity in ARGO-YBJ collaboration. I continued developing the Online routines for the monitoring of the front-end electronic and for the data decoding. I also contributed to the detector and DAQ installation at

YangBaijing (Tibet). Since 2004 till the end of data taking (February 2013) I have been the Runn Coordinator. I contributed to many analysis items. In particular I

(3)

worked on algorithms for Gamma-Hadron separation to enhance our sensitivity to gamma sources, on the time structure of the Cosmic Ray Shower fronts,

and on the Proton-Air and Proton- Proton cross section with ARGO-YBJ detector (ARGO Collaboration, "Proton-air cross section measurement with the ARGO-YBJ cosmic ray experiment PHYSICAL REVIEW D, PARTICLES, FIELDS,

GRAVITATION, AND COSMOLOGY, vol. 80; p. 092004-1-092004-14).

[2005-2008] In this period I dedicated part of my research activity to a Medical Physics project, MAGIC5, to design a mammographic CAD in collaboration with “V. Fazzi Hospital in Lecce. The activity was devoted to develop algorithm to identificate nodules.

[2008-2013] In 2008 I became member of the AUGER collaboration. I started taking the responsibility of the PMTs test station in Malargue. The test station was built to test the 1600 PMTs of the AUGER array. My duty was to recover the old system to make it suitable for the detector maintenance. I changed the old CAMAC system and substituted it by a new VME System. Actually we are working to new possible task of the station for the AUGER upgrade beyond 2015. I’m also responsible for the Work Package 1, front end package (including the ADC), of the electronic upgrade of the collaboration to be installed in 2015.
