W. A. Mozart, from Don Giovanni quartet
“Non ti fidar, o misera”
DONNA ELVIRA Non ti fidar, o misera, di quel ribaldo cor!
Me già tradì quel barbaro, te vuol tradir ancor.
(a parte)
Forse si calmerà.
DONNA ELVIRA
Ah, non credete al perfido!
DON GIOVANNI È pazza; non badate!
DONNA ELVIRA
Restate, o Dei, restate!
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO A chi si crederà?
DON GIOVANNI È pazza!
W. A. Mozart, from Don Giovanni quartet
“Do not believe, unhappy one”
DONNA ELVIRA
Do not believe, unhappy one, in that faithless heart!
The villain has already betrayed me!
Now he seeks to betray you.
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO Heavens, what noble bearing, what sweet majesty!
Her pallor, her tears fill me with pity!
DON GIOVANNI
The poor girl is mad, my friends, leave me alone with her,
she's mad, my friends.
(aside)
Perhaps she will calm down.
DONNA ELVIRA
Ah, do not believe the faithless one!
DON GIOVANNI
She's mad, pay no attention.
DONNA ELVIRA
Stay, for Heaven's sake, stay!
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO In whom should we believe?
DON GIOVANNI She's mad!
DONNA ELVIRA Restate!
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO A chi si crederà?
DONNA ELVIRA
Ah! Non credete al perfido; restate!
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO, DON GIOVANNI Certo moto d'ignoto tormento...
DONNA ELVIRA
Sdegno, rabbia, dispetto, pavento...
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO, DON GIOVANNI ...dentro l'alma girare mi sento...
DONNA ELVIRA
DONNA ELVIRA
DON GIOVANNI (a parte) Se men vado, si potria qualche cosa sospettar.
DON OTTAVIO (a Don Giovanni) Dunque quella...
DONNA ELVIRA Stay!
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO In whom should we believe?
DONNA ELVIRA
Ah! Do not believe the faithless one! Stay!
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO, DON GIOVANNI A feeling of strange import...
DONNA ELVIRA
Scorn, rage, disdain and fear...
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO, DON GIOVANNI ...stir within my breast.
DONNA ELVIRA
...stir within my breast.
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO DON GIOVANNI They tell me of this poor woman
a hundred things I cannot yet grasp, etc.
DONNA ELVIRA
They tell me of his betrayer
a hundred things I cannot yet grasp, etc.
DON OTTAVIO (aside) I will not leave here until I find out the truth.
DONNA ANNA (aside) There is no sign of madness in her manner, in her speech.
DON GIOVANNI (aside) If I should go, they might suspect something.
DONNA ELVIRA
From his expression they should be able to estimate his bad character.
DON OTTAVIO (to Don Giovanni) So then she -
DON GIOVANNI È pazzarella.
DONNA ANNA (a Donna Elvira) Dunque quegli...
DONNA ELVIRA È un traditore.
DON GIOVANNI Infelice!
DONNA ELVIRA
Mentitore! Mentitore! Mentitore!
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO Incomincio a dubitar.
Siate un poco più prudente;
vi farete criticar!
DONNA ELVIRA (forte a Don Giovanni) Non sperarlo, o scellerato,
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO (a parte) Quegli accenti sì sommessi,
(Donna Elvira parte.)
DON GIOVANNI Is a little mad.
DONNA ANNA (to Donna Elvira) So then he -
DONNA ELVIRA Is a betrayer.
DON GIOVANNI Poor woman!
DONNA ELVIRA Liar! Liar! Liar!
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO I'm beginning to suspect.
DON GIOVANNI (to Donna Elvira) Softly, softly. People
are beginning to gather around us.
Be a little more prudent,
you will become an object of gossip.
DONNA ELVIRA (loudly to Don Giovanni) Don't place your hopes there, villain, I have lost my sense of modesty!
Your guilt and my situation shall be known to all.
Don't place your hopes, etc.
DONNA ANNA, DON OTTAVIO (aside) Those whispered undertones,
that constant blushing, are all too clear an indication and banish all my doubts, etc.
DON GIOVANNI (to Donna Elvira) Softly, softly. People, etc.
(Donna Elvira goes off.)

Invan mel chiedete, Più meco ei non è.
Guglielmo
Guglielmo
Ferrando meschino! Possibil non par.

Guglielmo
This heart I give you, My adored one; But I want yours in return; Come, give it me.
Dorabella
You've given it and I take it, But mine I cannot give; In vain you ask it of me, It is no longer mine.
Guglielmo
If you no longer own it, Why does it beat here?
Dorabella
If you gave me it, What is still beating there?
Dorabella and Guglielmo
It is my own dear heart That is no longer mine; It's come to lodge with you, And that's what's beating so.
Guglielmo
Let me put it here.
Dorabella
There it cannot stay.
Guglielmo
I understand, you little rogue.
Dorabella
What are you doing?
Guglielmo You're not to look.
Dorabella
I feel I have A volcano in my bosom!
Guglielmo
Poor Ferrando! It doesn't seem possible. Now turn your pretty eyes on me.
Dorabella
What do you want?
Guglielmo
See, Doesn't that look better?
Dorabella e Guglielmo
Oh cambio felice Di cori e d'affetti!
Che nuovi diletti, Che dolce penar!
Dorabella and Guglielmo
Oh happy exchange Of hearts and affections!
What new delights! What sweet pain!
W. A. Mozart, Act 2, finale - Papageno's suicide scene + duet with Papagena
PAPAGENO
Papagena! Papagena! Papagena!
(pfeift)
Weibchen! Täubchen! meine Schöne! – Vergebens!
Schöne Mädchen, denkt an mich!
Papageno frisch hinauf, ende deinen Lebenslauf.
W. A. Mozart, Act 2, finale - Papageno's suicide scene + duet with Papagena
PAPAGENO
Papagena! Papagena! Papagena!
(playing his pipes)
Little wife! my dove! my beauty! – In vain! Ah, she is lost!
I was born to be unlucky! –
I chattered, and that was naughty, so I got what I deserved! –
Ever since I tasted that wine – ever since I saw that pretty girl, my heart has been burning
and it pinches me here and there!
Papagena! Wife of my bosom!
Papagena, dearest dove!
It is in vain, all useless!
I am weary of life!
Death puts an end to love
when it burns your heart like this.
(takes a rope from around his waist) I shall ornament this tree
by hanging myself from it
because my life has gone all wrong.
Goodnight, deceiving world! – You treated me badly
and denied me a pretty mate, so it is all over, so I shall die.
Pretty maiden, think of me! – If someone takes pity on me, poor wretch, before I hang myself – I will let it go this time!
Speak up: yes, or no! – No one hears me; all is silent!
So this, then, is your decision!
Papageno, get on with it and end your weary life.
I’ll wait a little longer –
while I count: one, two, three!
(He pipes, looking around him.)
eins! zwei! drei!
Nun wohlan! es bleibt dabei!
Weil mich nichts zurücke hält, gute Nacht, du falsche Welt!
(will sich hängen)
DIE KNABEN
Halt ein! o Papageno, und sei klug!
Man lebt nur einmal, dies sei dir genug!
PAPAGENO
Ihr habt gut reden, gut zu scherzen;
Klinget, Glöckchen, klinget, schafft mein Mädchen her!
Klinget, Glöckchen, klinget, bringt mein Mädchen her!
Klinget, Glöckchen, klinget, bringt mein Weibchen her!
bringt sie her!
mein Mädchen her! mein Weibchen her!

(He is about to hang himself.)
THE SPIRITS
Stop, Papageno, and be wise!
You only live once, let that suffice!
PAPAGENO
Well may you counsel, well may you laugh; but if your hearts were burning like mine, you too would be looking for girls.
THE SPIRITS
Then play your bells;
they will bring your mate along.
PAPAGENO
What a fool I am I forgot the magic instrument!
(takes out his instrument) Resound, magic bells, resound, I must see my darling girl!
(The boys go and reapper bringing out the woman.)
Ring, little bells, ring,
send my sweetheart here to me!
Ring, little bells, ring, bring my mate here!
Ring, little bells, ring, bring my little wife here!
Bring her here!
my sweetheart, my little wife!
