Problem 11790

(American Mathematical Monthly, Vol.121, August-September 2014) Proposed by Arkady Alt (USA) and Konstantin Knop (Russia).

Given a triangle with semiperimeter s, inradius r, and medians of length ma, mb, and mc, prove that

ma+ mb+ mc≤ 2s − 3(2√ 3 − 3)r.

Solution proposed by Roberto Tauraso, Dipartimento di Matematica, Universit`a di Roma “Tor Vergata”, via della Ricerca Scientifica, 00133 Roma, Italy.

Let us consider the triangle ABC and let A and B be the symmetric points of A and B with respect to the midpoints of BC and CA respectively. Then, by Ptolemy’s inequality applied to the quadrilateral ABAB, we have that

4mamb= (2ma)(2mb) ≤ ab + (2c)c = ab + 2c2.

In a similar way, 4mbmc≤ bc + 2a2, 4mcma≤ ca + 2b2and by adding all together we find that 2(mamb+ mbmc+ mcma) ≤ a2+ b2+ c2+1

2(ab + bc + ca).

Moreover, 4m2a = 2b2+ 2c2− a2 and similar formulas imply m2a+ m2b+ m2c = 3

4(a2+ b2+ c2).

Hence

(ma+ mb+ mc)2≤ 7

4(a2+ b2+ c2) +1

2(ab + bc + ac).

Since

R= abc

4ps(s − a)(s − b)(s − c) and r =

r(s − a)(s − b)(s − c)

s ,

it is easy to verify that

a2+ b2+ c2= 2s2− 8Rr − 2r2 and ab + bc + ac = s2+ 4Rr + r2. Therefore

(ma+ mb+ mc)2≤ 4s2− 12Rr − 3r2, and it suffices to prove that

4s2− 12Rr − 3r2≤ (2s − 3(2√

3 − 3)r)2 that is

s ≤ R+ (16 − 9√ 3)r 2√

3 − 3 . Finally, by Blundon’s inequality, s ≤ 2R + (3√

3 − 4)r. So we still have to show that 2R + (3√

3 − 4)r ≤ R+ (16 − 9√ 3)r 2√

3 − 3

which is equivalent to Euler’s inequality R ≥ 2r.

Remark. For Blundon’s inequality see Inequalities associated with the triangle, Canad. Math. Bull., 8 (1965), 615-626 and Problem E1935, The Amer. Math. Monthly, 73 (1966), 1122.
