L’anno 2022 si apre, per l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Dublino, con un ritorno agli eventi in presenza all’interno della storica sede di Fitzwilliam Square. Dopo mesi di contenuti digitali e mostre online, abbiamo deciso di dare spazio finalmente ad una serie di 5 esposizioni dal vivo sull’Illustrazione italiana contemporanea, nei locali al primo piano del nostro Istituto. Un’iniziativa che mira a riportare gli amanti della cultura italiana nel suo luogo dublinese per antonomasia, il palazzo che da quasi 70 anni ospita l’Istituto di Cultura, e a fornire allo stesso tempo uno sguardo interessante e contemporaneo sull’Illustrazione italiana.
Le mostre in programma vedono la partecipazione di 5 artisti italiani (Mario Sughi, Valeria Petrone, Giulio Vesprini, Daniele Trombetti, Fabio Sardo) e di un artista irlandese (Shane O’Driscoll), tutti testimoni di modi e prospettive diverse di approcciare l’illustrazione e la pittura. Le opere esposte si differenziano cioè per stile, situazioni descritte, pubblico di riferimento. È quindi un caleidoscopio di impressioni e di punti di vista, quello che vi proponiamo.
Siamo sicuri che questo ritorno all’arte fruita nello spazio sia di estrema importanza in questo momento storico e che, farlo attraverso gli occhi fantasiosi e visionari dei nostri artisti, sia due volte più necessario.

The Italian Institute of Culture welcomes the year 2022 with a programme of events that are due to take place live in its historical premises at Fitzwilliam Square.
After months of on-line exhibitions and digital contents, we can finally host a series of 5 live exhibitions about contemporary Italian illustration, in the rooms located at the first floor of our Institute. An initiative whose goal is to attract lovers of Italian Culture back to its Dublin heart - the building that for the last 70 years has been home to the Institute of Culture – while at the same time giving visibility to some of the most interesting contributions to the art of contemporary Italian illustration.
The exhibition will shine a spotlight on 5 Italian artists (Mario Sughi, Valeria Petrone, Giulio Vesprini, Daniele Trombetti, Fabio Sardo) and 1 Irish artist (Shane O’Driscoll), who all present alternative and original ways to tackle painting and illustration. The works on display will be therefore varied in style, topics and situations as well as the public that they ideally address. The offer wilfully provides a kaleidoscope of impressions and points of view.
We are positive that a return to appreciating art in a spatial dimension is extremely important at this moment in time, and even more so doing that through the imaginative and visionary perspectives of our artists.

Mario Sughi inizia a disegnare e dipingere fin da bambino sotto la guida del padre, il pittore, Alberto Sughi. Alla fine degli anni Settanta va a vivere a Roma dove pubblica le sue prime illustrazioni sulle riviste di satira “Il Male” e “Zut” e si laurea, nel 1986, in Arte e Storia all’Università La Sapienza. Tre anni dopo si trasferisce a Dublino dove nel 1995 completa un dottorato in Storia medievale presso il Trinity College.
Nel 2007 decide infine di dedicarsi unicamente alla sua carriera di artista. In quell’anno partecipa a una prima mostra collettiva, presso la Galleria Loft di Dublino, alla quale seguiranno le prime esposizioni personali:
Green Room, Manchester (2010), Exchange Gallery e The Complex Studios, Dublino (2011). Nel 2011 le sue opere vengono presentate all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Dublino, nell’ambito della 54ma Biennale di Venezia, Il Padiglione Italia nel Mondo.
Successivamente gli vengono dedicate mostre personali a Waterford (2012), Roma (2012), Vicenza (2013), Mannheim (2014 & 2015), Aberdeen (2016), Torino (2016) Athlone (2017), Drogheda (2017), Roma (2018), Forlì (2020) e IIC Bratislava (2021), e viene invitato a partecipare a nove rassegne dell’Arte Irlandese presso la Royal Hibernian Accademy di Dublino (2012-2021). Il suo lavoro è stato inoltre installato presso l’Aeroporto di Dublino (2011), al NHOW Hotel (Milano 2013), il Grosby Park (Dublino 2015) e la Biblioteca Pubblica di Raheny (Dublino 2016) e incluso in collezioni pubbliche e private, tra cui la Municipal Gallery di Waterford, il Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Cassino (CAMUSAC) e l’Absolute Art Collection.
Come illustratore collabora con Domani Editoriale (Roma) e ha recentemente disegnato le copertine degli ultimi romanzi di Sally Rooney (Persone Normali), Domenico Starnone (Confidenza), David Nicholls (Un dolore così dolce) e Johanna Hedman (Trio), per le case editrici Einaudi, Europa Editions, Neri Pozza e Amsterdam Libres.
Mario Sughi began drawing and painting as a child under the guidance of his father, the artist, Alberto Sughi, in Cesena. At the end of the seventies he went to live in Rome where he published his first illustrations in the satirical magazines “Il Male” and “Zut” and studied Art and History at the University of La Sapienza, graduating in 1986. Three years later he moved to Dublin where in 1995 he completed a PhD in Medieval History at Trinity College.
In 2007 he decided to devote himself exclusively to his career as an artist. In that year he took part in a first group exhibition at the Loft Gallery in Dublin, which was followed by solo exhibitions at Green Room, Manchester (2010), Exchange Gallery and The Complex Studios, Dublin (2011). In 2011 his works were presented at the Italian Cultural Institute in Dublin, as part of the 54th Venice Biennale, Il Padiglione Italia nel Mondo.
Subsequently, solo exhibitions of his work were held in Waterford (2012), Rome (2012), Vicenza (2013), Mannheim (2014 & 2015), Aberdeen (2016), Turin (2016) Athlone (2017), Drogheda (2017), Rome (2018), Forlì (2020) and IIC Bratislava (2021) and he has been invited to take part at nine editions of the Annual Exhibition of Irish Art at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin (between 2012-2021). His work has been installed at Dublin Airport (2011), NHOW Hotel (Milan 2013), Grosby Park (Dublin 2015) and the Raheny Public Library (Dublin 2016) and is included in public and private collections, including the Municipal Gallery of Waterford, the Cassino Museum of Contemporary Art (CAMUSAC) and the Absolute Art Collection.

Quando disegno o dipingo non penso mai di voler portare con il mio lavoro una testimonianza storica sulla città di Dublino e la sua gente.
Dublino, dove vivo e lavoro da più di trent’anni oramai, è sicuramente una delle fonti principali del mio
immaginario visivo e le sue strade, posti, interni, esterni e la sua gente han finito per occupare una gran parte dei miei lavori.
Adesso riguardando questa selezione di lavori per la mostra dal titolo “Dubliners” all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura, mi sembra che la mia Dublino e i suoi Dublinesi siano abbastanza diversi da quelli generalmente
“raccontati” da altri pittori e illustratori o anche
scrittori, mi sembra al confronto una Dublino molto mia - ma forse anche e proprio per questo - non meno autentica!
When I draw or paint I never think I want to present with my work a historical testimony about the city of Dublin and its people.
Dublin, where I have lived and worked for more than thirty years now, is certainly one of the main sources of my visual imagination, and its streets, places, interiors, exteriors and its people have ended up occupying a large part of my work.
Now looking at this selection of works for the exhibition entitled ‘Dubliners’ at the Italian Institute of Culture, it seems to me that my Dublin and its Dubliners are quite different from those generally “told” by other painters and illustrators or even writers. It seems to me in comparison a Dublin that is very much mine, but perhaps - and precisely for this reason also - no less authentic.

Wonder, meraviglia, è un termine che ben si addice a descrivere il lavoro artistico di Valeria Petrone, perché racchiude in sé lo stupore infantile verso il mondo e la ricchezza di una natura che non smette mai di sorprendere.
Questo doppio registro espressivo si riflette nelle due sezioni della mostra ospitata nelle sale dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Dublino. Il percorso espositivo comincia con una serie di ritratti in acrilico su tela di donne immaginarie: figure femminili forti, generose, profondamente legate all’energia della natura, alla dimensione animale e vegetale. In questa prima parte troveranno spazio anche alcune opere in ceramica.
Nella seconda sezione viene esposta una raccolta di illustrazioni tratte da alcuni dei molti libri e pubblicazioni per l’infanzia che l’autrice e illustratrice ha realizzato negli anni: animali, mostri delicati, creature curiose e fuori dall’ordinario prendono qui forma e vita strappando sorrisi e invitandoci a spalancare gli occhi.
‘Wonder’ is a term befitting the artistic work of Valeria Petrone, because it entails the same sense of childhood awe towards the world and especially the ever-surprising magnificence of nature.
This dual register of artistic expression is reflected by the two sections of the exhibition hosted by the Italian Institute of Culture. The artistic journey begins with a series of acrylic portraits on canvas of imaginary women: strong and giving feminine characters who are deeply connected to the forces of nature, both as the animal kingdom and vegetation. In this first section will also be displayed ceramic items.
The second section will display a collection of
illustrations taken from some of the numerous children’s books and publications that the author and illustrator has realized throughout the years: animals, gentle monsters, curious and extraordinary creatures rise and come to life, stirring a smile and inviting us to look with eyes and hearts wide open.
Valeria Petrone vive a Milano, ma cresce
professionalmente a Londra, dove inizia ad illustrare i suoi primi libri per bambini. Dal 1988 ha pubblicato oltre 40 titoli in Italia, Stati Uniti, Francia e Gran Bretagna. I suoi lavori spaziano dalla letteratura per l’infanzia alle illustrazioni per la pubblicità, copertine di libri, packaging, app digitali, animazioni, giornali e riviste.
Le sue opere sono state selezionate dagli annual di Society of Illustrators of New York, American Illustration, Communication Arts, Autori di Immagini e hanno vinto numerosi premi tra cui nel 2008 e nel 2014 la medaglia d’oro da 3x3 Pro Show Annual. Nel 2015 l’app Goodnight Dadà, realizzata in collaborazione con Studio Elastico, ha ricevuto il “Bologna Ragazzi Digital Award” e il “Premio Andersen”. Nel 2021 è stata insignita del Premio alla Carriera dall’Associazione Autori Italiani. Persegue anche la carriera di pittrice e le sue opere sono state esposte in Italia e all’estero.
Tra le mostre più recenti, la collettiva “Wave” East Sea International Art Pre-Biennial del 2021 tenutasi nella provincia di Gangwon e nella città di Donghae, in Corea, nel 2019 e nel 2018 “Mixed _Melted, Global Illustration Poster Show” in Fiera di illustrazione di Seoul, Corea.
“Mukashi, Mukashi” per Images of Fantasy Sàrmede nel 2017, W. Women in Italian Design - al Triennale Design Museum di Milano nel 2016 e “Close Up” - al Museo Arti Visive di Palazzo Collicola a Spoleto nel 2015, e due personali mostre: nel 2011 ad Arezzo presso Palazzo Chianini-Vincenzi nel 2014 e a Roma nella galleria CR - Art Palazzo Taverna.
Dal 2021 le sue immagini tratte dal libro “Un mondo concepito per sbaglio”, scritto da Umberto Sebastiano, sono entrate a far parte della Collezione Farnesina del Ministero degli Affari Esteri italiano.
Valeria Petrone lives in Milan, but grew up professionally in London, where she began to illustrate her first children’s books. Since 1988 she has published over 40 titles in Italy, the United States, France and Great Britain.
Her works range from children’s literature to illustrations for advertising, book covers, packaging, digital apps, animations, newspapers and magazines.
Her work over the years has been selected by the annuals of Society of Illustrators of New York, American Illustration, Communication Arts and has won numerous awards including in 2008 and 2014 the 3x3 Pro Show Annual Gold Medal. In 2015 the Goodnight Dadà app, created in collaboration with Studio Elastico, received the “Bologna Ragazzi Digital Award” and the “Andersen Award”. In 2021 she was awarded the Life Achievement Award by the Italian Autori di Immagini association. She also pursues a career as a painter and her works have been exhibited in Italy and abroad.
Among the most recent exhibitions, the 2021 collective

Giulio Vesprini è di Civitanova Marche dove è nato nel 1980.
Si è diplomato all’Accademia delle Belle Arti di Macerata e laureato alla Facoltà di Architettura di Ascoli Piceno. Dal 2004 si occupa di Arte Urbana partecipando a numerosi progetti in Italia e all’estero.
Parallelamente all’attività di Urban Artist, il suo lavoro si concentra principalmente nell’ambito della direzione artistica e della comunicazione visiva per aziende e istituzioni pubbliche.
Esponente della scena grafica e urbana italiana vanta numerose pubblicazioni come il Basic Logos Book, Fresh Public, Design&Design, Abitare, Architecture Suisse, Graffiti Art Magazine e diverse esposizioni come il DEJ “Digital is Human” al Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia di Milano, “Banlieue” presso Institut Francais sempre a Milano, “Le MUR” a Saint- Étienne, “Houston Street Project” a New York e il
“Cheap Festival” a Bologna. Cura e dirige dal 2009
“Vedo a Colori - Museo d’Arte Urbana” un progetto di riqualificazione che sta trasformando il porto di Civitanova Marche attraverso la disciplina della Street Art. Nel 2013 fonda lo studio creativo Asinus in Cathedra e nello stesso anno inizia la sua ricerca sul concetto di Archigrafia che trasforma in azioni itineranti trasformando vari playground e parchi in opere d’arte attivando così un percorso di ricerca sul tatticismo urbano, interrogandosi sulla relazione tra grafica e architettura. Dal 2005 espone i suoi lavori in gallerie d’arte e negli anni realizza importanti progetti creativi per clienti come Ikea Italia, Bruno Barbieri, Pinacoteca Civica di Ancona, Il Sole 24 Ore, Enel Energia, Rag&Bone NYC, EASports Italia e molti altri. Vive e lavora a Civitanova Marche.
Giulio Vesprini (1980, Civitanova Marche, Italy) is an urban artist and graphic designer who works in a variety of media.
He has attended two major schools: Academy of Fine Arts and the Department of Architecture. With a subtle minimalistic approach, Vesprini focuses on the idea of
‘public space’ and more specifically on spaces where graphic and wall can be united at any given moment:
the non-private space and space that is economically uninteresting can become utility space. His artworks are often about contact with architecture and graphic elements.
By applying abstraction, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles. His practice provides some graphic tools with a minimalist approach in the world of art: these meticulously planned works resound and resonate with images culled from the fantastical realm of imagination.
In a search for new methods to ‘read the city’, he creates work in which a fascination with the clarity of content and attitude towards conceptual and minimal art can be found. His work doesn’t reference at recognisable form but Vesprini focuses the results in one word, the word that he love: “Archigrafia” where he deconstructed this concept to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. He has obtained various awards and publications related to his graphic design, wall paint and illustration work.

Dal 16 giugno 2022 al 1 luglio 2022, l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Dublino celebra l’arte contemporanea italiana e irlandese attraverso una mostra che riunisce le opere di un artista irlandese, Shane O’Driscoll, accanto ad un artista italiano, Giulio Vesprini.
Entrambi street artists, grafici d’arte e curatori di progetti di arte urbana, sono molto attivi nei rispettivi paesi di residenza.
L’iniziativa, presentata da Radio Dublino e curata da Cristina Ciampaglione, è la declinazione dell’Italian Fusion Festival in arte visiva, promuovendo la conoscenza e il valore della pratica artistica contemporanea italiana e irlandese, e celebrando similarità tra due approcci complementari.
Le opere in mostra offriranno un punto di vista sulle pratiche artistiche contemporanee dei due artisti selezionati, esponendo stampe d’arte, dipinti su tela e fotografie, video di opere e progetti di arte urbana.

Shane O’Driscoll è un artista visivo attivo principalmente nella stampa d’arte e nei murales.
L’arte dell’equilibrio dà forma al suo lavoro dove pochi e selezionati elementi, che vanno dal geometrico alle texture, vengono accuratamente da lui sovrapposti all’interno di uno sfondo piano.
Ogni motivo è distintivo di per sé, ma capace di creare tensione e impatto nell’esaltarsi in dialogo con gli altri elementi e grazie all’accurata composizione.
Ha studiato comunicazione visiva ed è membro dei Cork Printmakers. È inoltre autore di murales di grandi dimensioni sia in città che in zone rurali.
I suoi lavori sono stati esposti in numerose mostre a livello nazionale e internazionale tanto da essere acquisiti all’interno delle collezioni permanenti della National Gallery of Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, Glucksman Museum UCC e UCD.
Shane O’Driscoll is a visual artist who practices mainly in printmaking and murals.
The art of balance informs his work.
Limited elements ranging from the geometric to the textured are carefully positioned against a flat back- ground.
Each motif is distinctive in its own right but it also enhances and resonates with those around, creating an element of tension or frisson across the composition.
He studied Visual Communications and is a member of Cork Printmakers. He also creates large scale murals in both city and rural settings.
He has exhibited his work internationally and throughout Ireland. Shane has work in the permanent collection of The National Gallery of Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, Glucksman Museum UCC, and UCD.

“Osservo, immagino in punta di matita” è un viaggio, quasi onirico, all’interno dei lavori di Daniele Trombetti.
Attraverso le opere esposte all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura, siamo infatti testimoni del suo viaggio alla scoperta di emozioni sempre nuove e di un suo percorso, molto personale, che si sviluppa negli anni attraverso diverse tecniche e generi narrativi, evidenziando l’ecletticità del segno e delle specificità esecutive.
Una mostra che ci invita ad esplorare questo mondo
“in punta di matita”, partendo cioè da questo suo personale punto di vista che costituisce sì un luogo di osservazione non certo elevato, ma tuttavia privilegiato per apprezzare l’arte che costantemente ci circonda.
Daniele Trombetti trae ispirazione da qualsiasi cosa che lo circondi, anche la più minuscola, catturandola e riproponendola dotata di vita propria grazie alle sue capacità con cui conferisce alla realtà una dimensione onirica, ove non sempre è facile distinguere gli oggetti.
Tutto questo osservando ed immaginando il mondo dalla punta di una matita.

The exhibition “I observe, I imagine from the tip of a pencil” is an almost dreamlike journey within the works of Daniele Trombetti. Through the collection of his works at the Italian Institute of Culture, we can be witnesses to his journey in search of new emotions and of a very personal path. A perspective which Trombetti has been developing over the years through different styles and narrative approaches, within eclectic signs and techniques.
With this exhibition the author invites us to explore his world “from the tip of a pencil”, starting from his personal point of view, which is certainly not a high point of observation, but nevertheless a privileged place where to appreciate the Art that constantly surrounds us.
Daniele Trombetti can draw inspiration from anything, even the smallest thing that surrounds us. Once he captures it, through his skills, he shows us new things endowed with a life of their own, transferring them from the dream dimension to the real life.
All this by observing and imagining the world from the tip of a pencil.

1963.
Si diploma all’Istituto d’Arte di Urbino nel 1982.
Frequenta, in seguito, il corso biennale della scuola di fumetto e illustrazione “Zio Feinger” a Bologna dove entra in contatto con Maestri quali Andrea Pazienza, Lorenzo Mattotti, Igort, Marcello Jori e Giorgio Carpinteri.
Contemporaneamente inizia a pubblicare libri illustrati per bambini e collabora in seguito con vari editori, italiani ed esteri, per la Gakken di Tokyo (Giappone) e la Time Life in USA scrive i testi e le illustrazioni dei suoi libri.
Da un suo libro: “Nikolai in search of...” è stata tratta una pièce teatrale per bambini in Portogallo.
Alcuni titoli sono stati pubblicati anche in Thailandia e Taiwan.
Da oltre 22 anni collabora, in qualità di Educatore professionale, con numerose scuole Imolesi e conduce laboratori artistici che hanno la finalità di integrare gli alunni disabili nella classe.
Si è occupato anche di “formazione”.
Attualmente ha in progetto un libro fotografico sulle bellezze artistiche e architettoniche della città di Imola.
Daniele Trombetti was born in Imola (Italy) in May 1963, and graduated at the Art Institute of Urbino in 1982.
Afterwards, he attended the two-year course of the school of comics and illustration “Zio Feinger” in Bologna, where he met masters such as Andrea Pazienza, Lorenzo Mattotti, Igort, Marcello Jori, and Giorgio Carpinteri.
At the same time, he began to publish illustrated books for children, and later collaborated with various Italian and foreign publishers. For Gakken in Tokyo (Japan) and Time Life in USA, writing the texts and illustrations for his books.
In Portugal was realized a play for children based on one of his books: “Nikolai in search of...”
Some titles have also been published in Thailand and Taiwan.
For over 22 year he has been collaborating, as a professional educator, with numerous schools in Imola and conducting artistic workshops aimed at integrating disabled students into the classroom.
He has also been involved in “training”.
He is currently planning a photographic book on the artistic and architectural beauties of the city of Imola.

Rassegna di illustrazioni per l’infanzia tratte dai lavori pubblicati e non di Fabio Sardo. Illustrazioni minimaliste e giocose volte alla comunicazione diretta di sentimenti e situazioni. Lavori svolti nella convinzione che un segno sia sempre un segno, che sia usato per scrivere o disegnare ma che comunque abbia lo scopo di comunicare, che la comunicazione non abbia mai fine e che l’uomo sia un animale votato all’interazione sociale fin e soprattutto dall’infanzia, e che i bambini abbiano già strumenti atti a decifrare le immagini.
A series of illustrations for children taken from
published an unpublished works by Fabio Sardo. Playful and minimalist illustrations endeavouring to achieve a straightforward communication of feelings and situations. A series of works upholding the conviction that a stroke is always a sign, whether it serves the purpose of writing or of drawing, and as such it is meant to communicate. Communication is endless and man is being designed to socially interact from birth, and especially in childhood, and that children thus have all the tools to interpret an image.

È un illustratore freelance italiano con sede a Milano.
Diplomato nel 2004 alla “Scuola del fumetto di Milano”
dopo un corso triennale di fumetto realistico, nel 2018 ha frequentato il corso “Creative Publishing Direction”, dedicato alla gestione creativa dell’editoria tradizionale, dei new media e delle attività culturali, organizzato da Mimaster Illustrazione e Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori. Dopo la Scuola del fumetto ha intrapreso la carriera di illustratore nel campo dei libri per bambini e ragazzi.
Partendo da uno stile realistico, ha poi virato nel corso del tempo verso illustrazioni giocose e minimaliste.
Negli anni il suo rapporto con l’illustrazione è cambiato, il suo tratto si è asciugato e composizione e colore prevalgono ora sulla somiglianza al reale, fedele all’idea che l’illustrazione sia in fondo “comunicare”. Nel 2016 si è laureato in Sociologia all’Università Bicocca di Milano, evento che ha contribuito a cambiare il suo rapporto con l’illustrazione.
Le sue illustrazioni sono state selezionate diverse volte per l’Annual Book dell’Associazione autori di immagini e, nel 2021, ha vinto con “lo zainetto di Matilde” il
“Silent Book Contest Gianni De Conno Award”. Un suo corso in lingua inglese sulla realizzazione degli albi illustrati per l’infanzia è disponibile sulla piattaforma Skillshare. Lavora con case editrici italiane ed estere.
He is an Italian free-lance illustrator living in Milan.
He got a diploma in 2004 from International School of Comics of Milan after a three-year course in realistic comics; in 2018 he attended a course in “Creative Publishing Direction”, focused on creating management of the traditional publishing sector, of the new
medias and cultural activities, organized by Mimaster Illustrazione and Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori. After the Comics School he undertook a career as an illustrator in the area of children and young adults’ books.
Starting from a realistic style, he developed over time a playful and minimalist style. His relationship with illustration changed throughout the years: the stroke is restrained and composition and colour prevail now over resemblance to reality, stressing the art of illustration as a way to “communicate”. In 2016 he got a degree in Sociology from Bicocca University in Milan, an experience which contributed to shape his relationship with illustration.
His drawings were repeatedly selected for the annual book of the Association Autori di immagini, and in 2021 he was proclaimed the winner of the “Silent Book Contest Gianni De Conno Award” with the work
“Matilde’s schoolbag”. Sardo also offers a course in English about the making of illustrated books for children on the platform Skillshare. He works with publishing houses in Italy and abroad
