Abstract
The present work concerns the experimental analysis of the flow around a circular cylinder of aspect ratio 3 mounted vertically on a plane in a cross flow with Reynolds numbers between 60000 and 110000. After wake flow and surface visualizations, a statistical and spectral analysis of the aerodynamic forces acting on the body has been carried out. Subsequently, hot-wire anemometry measurements have been made in order to characterize both the wake morphology and the dynamics of the main vortical structures. Surface pressure measurements have then been carried out to get to a better understanding of the wake phenomena; the most important of these is the alternate vortex-shedding, which occurs at a Strouhal number of about 0.15, independent of the used measurement technique. This mode is found especially near the lateral boundaries of the wake and for distances from the ground plane less then half of the cylinder height. Conversely, it was not found from surface pressure signals acquired from the taps placed over the cylinder free-end, where some fluctuations with a lower Strohual number are present.
