Nel restauro ho voluto preservare l’aspetto e lo spirito originario di questo antico complesso religioso.
La vostra camera è stata ricavata dall’unione di più celle del Monastero o faceva parte di spazi comunitari delle Monache.
Il suo nome ricorda un’erba officinale o un fiore che le Monache coltivavano per utilizzarli nella preparazione di medicinali; erbe e fiori che potrete ammirare passeggiando nei giardini del Monastero.
Sono felice di condividere con voi questa mia dimora e vi auguro di cuore un piacevole e rilassante soggiorno al Monastero Santa Rosa.

As you may know, you are staying in a renovated
monastery, the former home of cloistered nuns of the
Dominican order. This same private seclusion can be yours to enjoy as you take your break from the chaos of the world.
Please allow yourself to rest and let our staff take care of your needs and desires. Just a little information about your room.
Working with the architect and local authorities, I made every effort to stay true to the original building. Your room is the original footprint of a nun’s cell or communal space.
The name of your room has been chosen from a list of medicinal herbs and flowers that the Santa Rosa nuns used to make medicines to sell to the community. As you stroll through the garden, you can find some of these plants.
It is truly my pleasure to share my home with you.

Costruito nel XVII secolo, il Monastero Santa Rosa è il sogno realizzato da Suor Rosa Pandolfi, discendente di una nobile famiglia di Pontone di Scala che lo costruì adiacente alla chiesa di Santa Maria di Grado. Il Monastero venne dedicato a Santa Rosa da Lima.
Le Monache hanno avuto modo di farsi conoscere e apprezzare anche per le loro qualità nell’arte della pasticceria (qui nacque la famosa Sfogliatella Santa Rosa) e per i preparati farmaceutici.
A metà del XIX secolo il Monastero fu sconsacrato e affidato al
Comune. Nel 1924 un albergatore romano, Massimiliano Marcucci, acquistò la struttura e la trasformò in albergo. Fu subito apprezzato per la sua semplicità, tipica della vita monastica, e diventò ben presto uno dei 39 Castelli albergo italiani. Alla morte dell’ultimo discendente della famiglia
Marcucci il Monastero conobbe un nuovo stato di abbandono.
Nel 2000 Bianca Sharma, come tanti turisti americani in viaggio sulla splendida Costiera
Amalfitana, lo vide dal mare e ne restò affascinata. Dopo qualche tempo riuscì ad acquistarlo e per curarne da vicino il restauro si trasferì in Costiera.
Il certosino restauro, operazione complessa e delicata, è durato una decina d’anni. Grazie alla passione di Bianca Sharma oggi il Santa Rosa è diventato un lussuoso Boutique Hotel, mantenendo però lo spirito delle origini. Quello tanto caro alle monache Domenicane.
The 17thcentury monastery came to life through the ambition of Sister Rosa Pandolfi, of the noble family Pontone di Scala, who funded the construction built adjacent to the ancient church of Santa Maria di Grado. The Monastero was dedicated to the glorious St. Rose of Lima. Over time the sisters became renowned for their baking skills (the famous Sfogliatella Santa Rosa) and for their apothecary, concocting effective remedies to treat common afflictions.
In the mid 1800’s, the religious establishment was
deconsecrated, and the Monastero was handed over to the municipality.
In 1924, a Roman hotelier, Mr. Marcucci, bought the abandoned old structure and transformed it into a hotel.
Esteemed for its authentic simplicity typical of monastic life, the Hotel Santa Rosa became one of the 39 castle hotels of Italy. After the death of the last member of the family, the building was once again left without a purpose.
In 2000, Bianca Sharma spotted the imposing structure from the sea and was instantly captivated, bought the property, moved to the Coast, and began her decade-long quest of restoring the Monastero into a luxury boutique hotel.

IL GIARDINO
Il Monastero Santa Rosa è impreziosito da bellissimi giardini, disposti su terrazze degradanti.
I muretti di contenimento a secco (macere), così come i piccoli sentieri che li solcano e le scalinate che li uniscono, sono stati realizzati in pietra locale.
Sono centinaia le piante e i fiori della flora mediterranea messi a dimora, affinché il giardino fiorisca ciclicamente in ogni fase dell’anno.

Maintaining the local ties to the area, intrinsically Italian influences exist throughout the botanical art as well as local stones used to restore and rebuild the gardens’ walls, stairs, and paths.
