The epidemic in Italy

I First case on 31 January 2020, two chinese tourists

I A cluster of approximately 15 confirmed cases detected in Lombardy on 21 February, with no established connection to China.

I Italy is the first “western” nation to experience a severe COVID-19 epidemic

I As of June 22, there have been 238,720 confirmed cases and 34,657 deaths

Data on the Italian epidemic

I The state of emergency is declared for 6 months on January 31 because of the danger presented by COVID-19.

I The Dipartimento della protezione civile (non military security) is charged with coordinating the response and releases every day at 18:30 data on current counts of cases and deaths.

Timeline

Feb. 22 Quarantine of more than 50,000 people from 11 municipalities in Northern Italy; schools in the regions where these

municipalites are located (Lombardy and Veneto) are closed + March 8 Quarantine expands to all of Lombardy and the following day

to all of Italy, placing more than 60 million people in

quarantine. On 11 March 2020, nearly all commercial activity are closed except for supermarkets and pharmacies. On 21 March, all non-essential businesses and industries are closed and movement of people is restricted.

May 4 Traveling restrictions are partially eased, and manufacturing industries and construction sites reopen

May 18 Most businesses reopen and citizens are allowed to travel within their regions

Regions and provinces of Italy

I There are 20 regions, all divided in provinces. The region called

“Trentino Alto Adige/Sudtirol” is divided in two “autonomous provinces”: Trento and Bolzano.

I Populations of regions varies from approx. 125,000 (Aosta) to approx. 10,000,000 (Lombardia).
