I saggi che compongono questo secondo volume degli "Scritti di Ugo Bianchi", Religions in Antiquity, illustrano due ambiti religiosi di fondamentale rilievo nel quadro complesso del mondo mediterraneo in età imperiale e tardo-antica, a vario titolo tangenti e interferenti con le tre grandi componenti di tale quadro, ossia lo scenario variegato delle storie religiose e delle filosofie delle culture tradizionali di questo mondo, a struttura politeistica e a forte densità ellenica, il giudaismo e il cristianesimo. Si tratta infatti di quei movimenti e di quelle comunità che, per il preminente interesse al conseguimento di una "conoscenza" a carattere salvifico, si conviene di accomunare nella denominazione di "gnosticismo" da una parte, e della

"fondazione religiosa" del Profeta di Babilonia, Mani, che nel III secolo proclama un

messaggio salvifico che si vuole espressione dell'annunzio di un Salvatore divino identificato al Gesù dei Vangeli, dall'altra. I saggi qui raccolti dimostrano la costante presenza del tema in tutto l'arco dell'attività scientifica dello studioso e in pari tempo illustrano efficacemente la duplice e convergente prospettiva in cui esso è affrontato.
