About this atlas

The second edition of this atlas provides a detailed histopathological diagnosis of cervical disease emphasizing carcinogenesis, and correlating morphologic changes with clinical aspects. Instructions of how to obtain and handle tissue samples are followed by a description of the normal histology, of the action of steroid hormones on the cervix, and of the various forms of regeneration and inflammation. The section on etiology and pathogenesis of HPV-induced neoplasia has been enlarged to explain new insights into cellular and nuclear deregulation at the molecular level. A chapter on immunohistochemistry has been added which includes refined detection methods, e.g., with p16 for the early differential diagnosis of premalignant lesions. The latest advances in molecular biological research, with predictive subdivision of neoplasias, facilitate the choice of the proper therapy. All chapters – supported by over 20 new

microphotographs – have been revised to include advances in the interpretation and management of cervical disease.

The tumor nomenclature is adapted to the new WHO classification; the ICD-O code has been added. The reference list is updated with relevant publications.
