l. Introduction
The aim of this article is to present the beginning
of
thework
of the Daughtersof Mary
Help of Christians in Thailand.The
FMA
came to Thailandinvited by
Fr. Gaetano Pasotti,Acting
Provincial of the Salesian Congregation and later thefust
Salesian Bishopin
Thailand, to helpin
the missionfield of
the Salesian Fathers who ar- rived in Thailand on October 1927 , after they were sent away from China."I
am sure", said the Bishop to the Superiors,"this
country is going to bea beautiful field of work and apostolate also for our Sisters". Mother Luisa Vaschetti, the Superior General, accepted the
invitation.'
Some important particulars, the
difficulties
and the sacrifices the Sis- ters of thefirst
generation had to undergo in order to give a good start to the works we enjoy nowadayswill
bebriefly
recalledin
this work.2.
General Background
Thailand is
situatedin
the heartof
the SoutheastAsian
mainland.There are
conflicting
opinions regarding theorigin
of the Thais.It
could be said with presumed certainty that the Thais originated in Northwestern Szechuanin
China about 4,500 years ago andlater
migrateddown
to their present homeland. Siam is the name by which the country was known to the worlduntil
I 939 and again between 1945 and I 949. OnMay
1949, anofficial
proclamation changed the name of the country to"Thailand".
Thailand is a constitutional monarchy
with
a democratic form of govern- ment. Since 1932, Kings of Thailand have exercised their constitutionallegislative powers, their executive powers
andtheir judicial
powers through specific government institutions.While
notdirectly
involvedin

Thailand's
political life,
the King exerts a strong moral influence on care-fully
selected issues.2The Catholic Church has a long history in Thailand. The
first
catho-lic
missionaries were Portuguese, they came to Siam in the year 156l.In
1922, the Vicariate
of
Bangkok had somewell
established churches, but there wereonly
30 indigenous priests and}O missionaries MEP, toofew
to assist the catholic population of about 25,000.At
that time, Msgr. Ren6 Perros proposed thedivision of
the Vicariatein
three parts andinvited
some religious orders to come to work in Thailand.33. The
FMA work in Thailand
Our mission in Thailand began
on
14 November 1931,with
the ar-rival of five
missionariesfrom Italy:
Sr.Maria Baldo,
Sr.Luigina Di Giorgio,
Sr.Graziella Amati,
Sr.Antonietta Morellato
and Sr.Giulia
Lauton. TheMajor
Superiors from Turin had appointed Sr.MariaAvio,
at that time missionary in Assam, as the leaderof
the group, so shejoined
themin
Bombay.The
first
residence of the Sisters was Bang Nok Kuek village. Provi- sory, they were lodgedin
the house where the Sisters of a local Congre- gation Lovers of the Crossformerly
lived who had left the mission before the Fathersof
theMissioni
Esteredi
Parigi handed over the mission to the Salesian Fathers.From their arrival,
the Sisters hadto
share the housewith
a local community of eightold
ladies that had been assistants of the missionary fathers. "The community-
said the chronicle-
was formed by eight sis-ters (ladies) who
formerly
were theright
hand of the missionariesin
the different residences.All of
them wereold
and they were sufferingfrom
many ailments. They had workedvery
hard andwith
great zealfor
the Church but now their only occupation was the teaching of the catechism".aIn
the same house, besides these eight ladies, there were some orphans and some other women who acted as housemaids. Annexed to the house, the Salesian Fathers had a small schoolfor
girls. They were helpedby

Help of Christians of Thailand.Our Sisters brought up in much different suroundings and with other mentality had to make great sacrifices to adapt themselves to that situa- tion. Fr. Braga, the Provincial of China,
visiting
the Sisters said:"...you
are the
first FMAs
who arrived in Thailand so you have a great responsi-bility
in front of the Congregation who sent you and in front of the peoplewho
sawyou arriving
here. Wewait for
God's miracles but we have to help God tofulfil
those miracles".sBesides these inconveniences, they had to face the communication problems because of the
difficulty
of the new language. The big obstacle the Sisters hadto
overcome atfirst
was surely the learningof
the Thai language. A young Salesian,Giorgio Bainotti,
had been assigned by the superiors to teach them Thaihalf
an hour a day.After
six months, the Sisters were able to speak alittle
bit of Thai, so they could take up the responsibilityofthe
school and the parish activities.On 2
June 1932, Fr. Gaetano Pasotti, theProvincial,
gathered the FMAs, the assistants, the orphans and the workers andofficially
appointed Sr. MariaAvio
as theonly
superiorof
the house and responsiblefor
the school and all the activities. This change of course hurt the feelings of theold
teachers,but our
missionariestried their very
bestto
make them understand the necessity of this arrangement. TheFMA
then, could begin to organize theirwork
and the activities of the mission.Only on 6 January 1934, the two communities, that of the
FMA
and the assistants were completely separated andtheir
memberscould live
andwork
independently.Right
from
the beginning, ourfive FMA
were under the direct care of theMajor
Superiors of Turin, but onl8
October 1934,the community wasaffiliated to
St. ThomasApostle
Provincewith
the headoffice
at Madras,like
the houses of China and Japan.On
21 June 1935, Sr.Maria Avio
returnedto India
and Sr.Maria
Baldo took her place as Superior. On the same year, thefirst
three aspir- ants startedtheir
postulancy and were sent toIndia for
their furtherfor-
mation.At
the end of the year 1935, other four missionaries arrived in Thai- land. The Sisters workedin
the school, were responsiblefor

and the laundry
of
the Salesian Fathers and besides that, they startedvi-
siting the catholic familiesin
other villages.On December 1935,during the
provincial visit,
Msgr. Pasotti asked the Provincial, Sr. Clotilde Cogliolo, to send two Sisters to the small town of Banpong to take care of the parish school for girls, the kitchen and the laundryof
the Salesian Fathers. Sr.Cogliolo
accepted the proposal and sentfive
Sisters there. The Sisters were lodgedin
aprovisory
wooden shack.At
Banpong,life
began in great poverty:lot of work, lot of
sacri- fices and no comfort at all. On 5May
1937, the General Council sent the approvalfor
the foundation projectof
a school.6On
16 February 1938, Msgr.Antonio
Drapier,Apostolic
Delegate for Thailand and Indochina, blessed the laying of the foundation stonefor
a new house dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The
building
constructed by the Congregation, on a pieceof
land given by Msgr. Pasotti, became thefirst
houseof
theFMA
in Thailand.TIn the meantime, Msgr. Pasotti decided to found a new local congre- gation. He requested the
FMA
for the religious formation of the new na-tive
Sisters."I know I am asking you a great sacrifice", he said to the provincial, "but
I
think no one better than you can form them giving the principles of the salesian apostolate".Mother
Provincial
immediately understood the importanceof
hav-ing
a local congregationfor
the apostolatein
the villages."Father",
she answered"your
trust and confidence is something grand, butI
am afraidI don't have Sisters enough prepared for this
important job' Anyway I will try
to please you".8
Mother Provincial called back from Banpong: Sr. Luigina Di
Giorgio
to be the Superior of the new congregation, and Sr. AntoniettaMorellato

exodusOn 19 March 1939, the Provincial, Sr. Cogliolo talked to Msgr. Pasotti to make clear some points regarding the Sisters and their activities.
These were the main points
of
the agreement:e1. The
FMA will definitely
leave the house of Bang Nok Kuek to the Sisters of the new native congregation; there theywill
have their mother house and novitiate.2.
Onlyfour FMA will
beleft
at BangNok Kuek:
one as Superior, one as Mother Mistress and the othertwo
as responsiblefor
the school, the workroom, the dispensary and the parish activitiestill
the native Sis- ters would be ready to take the responsibility themselves.3.
All
the otherFMA,
including the aspirants,will live
in Banpong.On
11April
1939, theFMA
wentto live in
the new housebuilt
at their own expense and the school was left under their own responsibility.Finally,
seven years aftertheir arrival in
Thailand, theFMA
could havetheir
own house andtheir own
mission. The school was given the Thai name Narivooth School.The
four
Sistersleft
at BangNok
Kuek were effective membersof
Banpong community and they were under the direct responsibility of the superior of Banpong.
During the years 1940 to 1946 the sisters had to undergo many hard- ships and
difficulties. In
December 1940 afierce religious
persecution began in the north eastern provinces.All
the French priests, brothers and nuns were order to leave thecountry;
someThai
priests and nuns were imprisoned and some were shot dead.On
13 December 1941, after the Japanese troops broke in Thailand, Sr. Rose Moore,Irish
missionaryholding British
passport, wasimpris-
oned in Banpong and then she was sent to a concentration camp in Bangkokfor two
months.In
September 1943, when theItalian
and the Japanese became ene- mies, ourItalian
missionaries werein
great danger. Before the Japanese soldiers could do any harm to theItalian
missionaries, theThai
authori- ties quietly arranged their imprisonment in the CapuchinNuns'
Convent("domicilio
coatto"); the Thai cloistered nuns went toNarivooth
School and livedwith
the three Salesian Sisters left there.After
two months, ourItalian
missionaries were free but because of the dangerous situationall

of them went to Bang
Nok
Kuek and lived there for twofull
yearstill
the end of the war in August 1945.'o5. New requests
After
the war,in
1947,the Bishop of Bangkok, Msgr. Perros,invited
theFMA
to take up the direction of the Schoolfor
theBlind
foundedin
1939by
an Americanblind
lady Miss Genevieve Caulfield. The superi- ors studiedcarefully
the situation and at the end accepted the new mis- sion. The Governorof
Bangkok handing over the schoolto
the Sisters said: "We entrust these unfortunate children to you and are sure that weput
themin
good hands.If your religion can make them happy, don't
refuse them this consolation".rr
Haad Yai, was the
third
house opened in Thailand by theFMA. Ac-
cording to the chronicleofthe
house:"This
foundation was desired and encouraged by Msgr. Pasotti who lent some money, without any interest, to the Sisters, in order to purchase a piece of land and a house. On 28 June1950, the
first
240girls
were welcomedby
the Sisters at Thidanukhro School, Haad Yai".t2These
first
three houses remained under St. Thomas Apostle Prov- ince with the head office at Madrasuntil
1952. The Provincials: Sr.Tulia
Bernardini, Sr.Clotilde Cogliolo,
Sr.Maria Avio
and Sr. TeresaMerlo regularly visited
the Sistersin
Thailand.In
1952, theMajor
Superiors decided to erect the three housesof
Banpong, Bangkok (Schoolfor
theBlind)
and Haad Yai as a Province. This event took place on 24 February 1952. Sr. Antonietta Morellato was thefirst
Provincial. The new province was put under the patronageof
St.Mary

Conclusion
In these past 75 years, the mission of the
FMA
in Thailand changednotoriously
according to the times.In
1931, when thefive
pioneers ar- rived, the missionfield
wasjust
a smallvillage;
now we have1l
housesall
over the country.Today we are
9l FMAs
in Thailand, and74 are native Sisters.All of
us, except a
few
aged Sisters, areinvolved in
the assistance and thefor-
mation of children and young peoplein big
schools, vocational centers, hostels andin
small poor village centers.Our
