Introduction

U. Veronesi and K. Redmond

CancerFutures was launched in 2001 with the aim of increasing knowledge about the complex world of cancer care through people and facts. Cover Story and Masterpiece are two key sections of the magazine that have featured in-depth interviews with some of Europe’s most infl uential oncology leaders-people who have been pioneers of the art and science of oncology over the past 30 years.

These interviews comprise a unique collection of stories that give insight into the many personal and profes- sional challenges these leaders have faced in building their careers and pushing forward the boundaries of oncology practice.

The European School of Oncol- ogy has been a proud supporter of CancerFutures since its establish- ment and is pleased to launch the CancerFutures Collection – a com- pilation of interviews that will be of interest to all members of the Euro- pean oncology community, both to- day and in the future. This collection has allowed us to acknowledge the tremendous contribution that these leaders have made to cancer care and pay tribute to their dedication and drive. The CancerFutures Col- lection provides a permanent testa- ment to their work and vision. It will provide encouragement for all those confronted with diffi culties in build- ing their careers, and perhaps, will

give some inspiration for our future leaders.

We would like to thank all those who have contributed to this work – the oncology leaders for agreeing to be interviewed, the journalists who carried out the interviews and the many people who were involved in the production process. We also would like to thank some of the peop- le behind CancerFutures – particu- larly, Professor Maurice Schneider, Editor-in-Chief, for his leadership and Alberto Costa, who had the idea, not only for the magazine, but also for the Cover Story section. We hope that readers will enjoy this special collection of cancer stories and gain new knowledge from the myriad ex- perience and insights of an excep- tional group of people.
