Abstract

The present work has been done for the exploration of an area located south of Mount Amiata. The area in question, which falls on the sheet 129 of the I.G.M.

topography at scale 1:100000, extends for about 35 Km

2

between the valleys of the rivers Albegna and Fiora, near Catabbio and S.Martino sul Fiora, (Grosseto province).

The aim is to collect basic data for assessment of geothermal potential, through geological activity of field, in particular to evaluate the presence of potentially exploitable geothermal systems, for industrial production of electricity.

The geological survey, has been done to defining the stratigraphy and structure of the area. It represents the basic activity from which, all geophysical and hydrogeochemical exploration techniques necessary for the reconstruction of a conceptual model of the geothermal field, cannot leave aside.

The field activities, conducted during the months of May and July 2011, during had provided the analysis of the outcropping lithologies belonging to multiple lithostratigraphic units and tectonic structures. Moreover, was conducted the photogeology analysis of the studied area, primary to plot on the macroscale the structures identified.

The result is a geological map, at scale 1:10000 and related geological sections, prepared on the basis of the geological survey, drafted on the topography of the

“REGIONE TOSCANA” (CTR), sheets: 33270 – 33280 – 332110 – 332120.

Moreover, attention has been focused on geothermal manifestations and hydrothermal mineralization, respectively, the direct expression of active and fossil hydrothermal systems.

In order to define a geothermal conceptual model, the geological map was

compared with the available geophysical data available from decades of geothermal and

mineral exploration of the area of the Mount Amiata.
