TERRITORY, POPULATION AND ENVIRONMENT

With 316 municipalities and a territory of more than 6,800 km2, well di- stributed in flat and hilly and mountainous areas, the province of Torino is the fourth in Italy, not only for the presence of the population (after Rome, Milan and Naples) but also for the extension of the surface area, placed after Bolzano, Foggia and Cuneo. However, it maintains the first position in Italy for the number of municipalities under its jurisdiction.

In terms of population, around 2.3 millions inhabitants at January 1st 2016, the subalpine territory has a population density of 336 inhabitants per km2: nearly 52% of the resident population is composed by women whereas nearly 39% is under 40 years old. Foreigners represent 9.7% of the total population.

The province of Torino has a good infrastructure, both functional to the economic needs and to the social needs of the territory. Among the main infrastructures, the Caselle Airport has registred in the last two years an increase in the number of passengers, thus reaching 3.7 millions (+6.8% compared to 2014). The average number of weekly internatio- nal flights (+7.4% compared to 2014) is also increasing, whereas the average number of weekly national flights is decreasing (-5.2%) and this is happening since 2013.

Next to good infrastructure, in the last years the city of Torino has ex- tended the areas of urban green spaces: according to the data available from the Municipality of Torino, in 2015 the city had large green are- as, mainly urban parks and historic parks (43.8% of the total) and big gardens (12.3%), a valuable contribution to urban livability and to its citizens and visitors’ perception of quality of life.

The volume of cars on the province of Torino roads amounts to a little less than a million and a half at the end of the year 2014: vehicles that conform to Euro 4 standards represent the highest percentage (nearly 35% of the total): followed by Euro 5 vehicles (21.4%) and Euro 3 vehi- cles (18.2%).

In 2015 the per capita waste production in the subalpine area is re- mained stable compared to the previous year. A similar trend is being registred at regional as well as at national level. As far as quantity is concerned, it amounts to approximately 458 kg per capita, nearly 6%

less than the Italian average.
