PROCLAMATION

By the Council of the International Federation of Environmental Health   

“WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DAY”

hereas  environmental  health  addresses  all  the  physical,  chemical,  and  biological  factors  external  to  a  W

person, and all the related factors impacting behaviours; 

 

Whereas environmental health encompasses the assessment and control of those environmental factors that  an  potentially  affect  health,  and  is  targeted  towards  preventing  disease  and  creating  health‐supportive  cenvironments; 

 Whereas  the  International  Federation  of  Environmental  Health  aims  to  provide  a  focal  point  for  national  rganisations  of  professionals,  whose  concern  is  the  care  of the  environment  in  the  interests of  the  public  o

health; 

 

Whereas the International Federation of Environmental Health  has worked for the past twenty five years to  epresent  the  interests  of  environmental  health  to  national  governments,  state  agencies  and  international  r

organisations and to promote the study of environmental health;  

 Whereas the International Federation of Environmental Health recognises the continuing threats to human  health  posed  by  pollution,  climate  change,  urbanisation,  globalisation  and  poverty,  and  the  urgent  need  to  dopt a preventive approach so as to maintain and improve the quality of the natural environment, air, water, 

  a

food, housing and communities in order to reduce the impact of disease and the public health; 

 

hereas  the  services  provided  by  environmental  health  professionals  heightens  the  visibility,  worth  and  W

significance of environmental health to the general public, governments and the public and private sectors; 

 

Whereas the core services provided by environmental health professionals are essential elements in building  healthy populations and these core services include food safety, sanitation, the protection of  drinking and  ecreation    water  quality,  the  protection  of  indoor  and  outdoor  air  quality,  communicable  disease  control,  r

tobacco control, vector management, emergency management and disaster preparedness, and,   

hereas the International Federation of Environmental Health recognizes that the dedication and work of  Wenvironmental health professionals, environmental health educators and students around the world; 

 Whereas the International Federation of Environmental Health therefore deems it fitting to further promote   he  improvement  of  environmental  parameters  and  services    of  environmental  health  professionals  by

declaring that  26 September  be celebrated as World Environmental Health Day, and   

Whereas the International Federation of Environmental Health declares that in support and recognition of  the inaugural Environmental Health Youth Summit to be held in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia in association with  he annual meeting of the Council of the Federation, that 26th September 2011 be deemed the foundational  tWorld Environmental Health Day.
