NOUNS AND DETERMINERS
In inglese ci sono quattro tipi di nomi:
Nomi comuni (Common nouns): dog: table, man.
Nomi propri (Proper nouns): Tom, France, Madrid, Ms Smith.
Nomi astratti (Abstract nouns): charity, beauty, fear, courage, joy.
Nomi collettivi (Collective nouns): swarm, team, crowd, flock, group.
NOMI
In linguistics, a noun is a member of a large, lexical category whose members can occur as the subject of a clause, the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition.
G. Salvucci - Elementary Grammar Course
NOMI
NUMBER
Il plurale dei nomi si forma generalmente aggiungendo una -s al singolare:
Dog-dogs, day-days, house-houses
I nomi che terminano -o or -ss, -sh, -ch, or -x formano il plurale aggiungendo -es:
Tomato-tomatoes, kiss-kisses, brush-brushes, box-boxes, etc.
Le parole di origine straniera o le parole abbreviate che terminano in -o aggiungono solo -s:
Piano-pianos, kimono-kimonos, biro-biros, photo-photos, etc.
NOMI
NUMBER
I nomi che terminano in consonante + y formano il plurale cambiando la -y in -ies:
Baby-babies, lady-ladies, country-countries, fly-flies, etc.
I nomi che terminano in vocale + y formano il plurale aggiungendo una -s:
Donkey/donkeys, boy/boys, day/days, etc.
Dodici nomi che terminano in -f o -fe cambiano -f /-fe con -ves.
Questi nomi sono:
wife, life, knife, wolf, self, calf, shelf, leaf, loaf, thief, sheaf, half:
Es. wife-wives, wolf-wolves, loaf-loaves.
Le altre parole che terminano in -f o -fe formano il plurale regolarmente aggiungendo una -s:
Cliff-cliffs, handkerchief-handkerchiefs, safe-safes
G. Salvucci - Elementary Grammar Course
NOMI
NUMBER
Alcuni nomi formano il plurale cambiando la vocale radicale (apofonia vocalica):
Man-men, woman-women, louse-lice, mouse-mice, goose-geese, foot-feet, tooth-teeth, child-children, ox-oxen.
I nomi di alcune creature al plurale non cambiano:
es. a sheep, two sheep.
La parola fish resta normalmente invariata. I seguenti tipi di pesce e molluschi di solito rimangono invariati: salmon/'samən/, trout/traʊt/, cod/kɒd/, plaice/pleɪs/.
NB: se questi nomi vengono usati intendendo un significato plurale il verbo deve essere messo al plurale!
NOMI
NUMBER Alcune parole sono sempre singolari:
advice, information, knowledge, news, baggage, luggage, furniture, rubbish, hair.
Queste parole prendono il verbo al singolare.
My hair is falling out.
Alcune parole sono sempre plurali: i.e. police, clothes, staff.
• Indumenti composti da due parti:
pyjamas, trousers, breeches, pants, etc.
• Attrezzi o strumenti composti da due parti:
binoculars, glasses, shears/ʃɪəz/, scissors/'sɪzəz/, scales/skeɪlz/.
Queste parole prendono il verbo al plurale.
G. Salvucci - Elementary Grammar Course
NOMI
NUMBER
Parole greche o latine:
Le parole che mantengono la forma originale greca o latina formano il plurale secondo le regole del greco o del latino:
Erratum-errata, datum-data, crisis -crises, basis-bases, thesis- theses, etc.
Ma per le parole entrate nell'uso comune, c'e la tendenza a seguire le regole dell'inglese:
Dogma-dogmas, genius-geniuses.
NOMI
NUMBER
Plurale dei nomi composti
Normalmente si mette al plurale l'ultima parola:
armchair-armchairs, bookcase-bookcases.
Quando la parola e composta da man or woman, si mettono al plurale tutte e due le parti del composto:
men students, women students
Nei nomi composti con preposizioni o avverbi si mette al plurale solo il primo elemento:
sister-in-law > sisters-in-law, looker-on > lookers-on

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
Uncountable nouns are characterized by the fact that they cannot be directly modified by a numeral without specifying a unit of measurement, and that they cannot combine with an indefinite article (a or an). Thus, the mass noun "water" is quantified as "20 liters of water" while the count noun "chair" is quantified as "20 chairs." However, mass nouns (like count nouns) can be quantified in relative terms without unit specification (e.g.,
"much water," "many chairs").
Nouns can be “countable” or “uncontable:
COUNTABLE NOUNS
A countable noun is a common noun that can be modified by a numeral and that occurs in both singular and plural form, as well as co-occurring with quantificational determiners like every, each, several, etc.
NOMI
NOMI
Masculine:
men, boys and male animals (pronome he/they) Feminine:
women, girls and female animals (pronome she/they) Neuter:
usato per cose, animali di cui non conosciamo il sesso e talvolta anche per i bambini di cui non conosciamo il sesso (pronome it/they).
GENDER
Unlike some other languages, in English, nouns do not have grammatical gender. However, many nouns can refer to masculine or feminine animate objects
G. Salvucci - Elementary Grammar Course
La maggior parte dei nomi hanno la stessa forma sia al maschile che al femminile:
Parent, child, painter, artist, driver, cook, singer, judge, cousin, etc.
NOMI
Alcuni hanno una forma diversa:
sister / brother, lady/lord, cow/bull, aunt/uncle, duchess/duke, mare/horse, niece/nephew, hen/cock, duck/drake.
Alcuni formano il femminile aggiungendo il suffisso -ess al maschile:
Da notare che le parole che terminano in -or o -er spesso perdono o oppure e:
actor/actress, conductor/conductressbutmanager/manageress.
GENDER
QUANTIFIERS (some, any, etc.)
Some e any (pronomi/aggettivi) significano 'un certo numero, una certa quantita'.
Sono usati davanti ai sostantivi plurali o non numerabili (uncountable nouns):
Would you like some biscuits?
I took some photos.
Some si usa:
Nelle frasi affermative: they took some honey.
Nelle domande da cui ci si aspetta una risposta affermativa:
Can I have some coffee?
Nelle offerte e nelle richieste:
would you like some wine?
Could you do some typing for me?
SOME, ANY
G. Salvucci - Elementary Grammar Course
Any si usa:
QUANTIFIERS (some, any, etc.)
Nelle frasi negative:
I haven't any matches.
Nelle domane (tranne quelle elencate sopra, i.e. offerte e richieste):
Have you any money?
Did you see any eagles?
Some puo essere usato con i sostantivi singolari numerabili per indicare qualcosa o qualcuno 'non specificato o sconosciuto':
Some idiot parked his car outside my garage.
He doesn't believe in conventional medicine; he has some remedy of his own.
QUANTIFIERS (some, any, etc.)
Any puo essere usato con i sostantivi singolari numerabili per indicare 'praticamente tutti':
Any book about riding will tell you how to saddle a horse.
Any dictionary will give you the meaning of these words.
No (aggettivo) e none (pronome) possono essere usati con verbi affermativi per esprimere una negazione:
I have no apples= I haven't any apples Tom has none= Tom hasn't any.
I took no photos= I didn't take any photos
G. Salvucci - Elementary Grammar Course
QUANTIFIERS (some, any, etc.)
I composti con some, any, no
I composti formati con some, any e no (someone, somebody, something, anyone, anybody, anything, no one, nobody, nothing) seguono le regole sopracitate.
I pronomi e gli aggettivi possessivi dovrebbero essere:
he/him, she/her e his/her.
Tuttavia, per evitare il linguaggio sessista, si possono usare le forme plurali they/them e their:
No one saw Tom go out, did they?
Has anyone left their luggage on the train?
Tutte queste espressioni hanno un significato singolare e prendono un verbo singolare:
Someone wants to speak to you on the phone.
Con something, anything e nothing non ci sono problemi di genere, quindi si puo continuare ad usare il pronome it:
Something went wrong, didn't it?
QUANTIFIERS (some, any, etc.)
MUCH e MANY
Many si usa davanti a sostantivi plurali numerabili.
He didn't make many mistakes.
Much si usa davanti ai sostantivi non numerabili.
We haven't much milk.
Aggettivi:
Pronomi:
Sia much che many possono essere usati come pronomi:
You have plenty of petrol but I haven't much.
Tom gets lots of letters but Ann doesn't get many.
In frase affermativa much e many sono di solito sostituiti da a lot (of):
Did you take many/a lot of photos? No, I didn't take many.
G. Salvucci - Elementary Grammar Course
QUANTIFIERS (some, any, etc.)
A little/a few e little/few
(aggettivi e pronomi)
A few/few si usa davanti a sostantivi plurali numerabili.
A few people.
Have you friends in this town? Very few.
A little/little si usa davanti ai sostantivi non numerabili.
A little time, a little sugar, etc.
You have saved something, haven't you? Very little.
QUANTIFIERS (some, any, etc.)
EACH, EVERY
Each e every indicano un numero di persone o cose considerate individualmente (‘ogni’).
• Each può essere aggettivo e pronome:
Each (man) knows what to do.
• Every è soltanto aggettivo:
Every man knows what to do.
Sia EACH che EVERY prendono un verbo singolare.
L'aggettivo possessivo di riferimento è quindi his/her.
Usando every si ha meno enfasi sull'individuo.
G. Salvucci - Elementary Grammar Course
POSSESSIVES
Il genitivo si usa:
per persone, nazioni e animali:
• Mary's toy, the bull's horns, Russia's exports
per navi, aerei, treni ed altri veicoli:
• the train's heating system
• the ship's mast
nelle espressioni temporali:
• a week's holiday, today's paper, a ten hours' delay
POSSESSIVES
Per indicare possesso si usa Of + noun:
→Quando il nome del possessore è seguito da una frase:
The boys ran about, obeying the directions of a man with a whistle.
→Con i 'possessori' inanimati, tranne quelli elencati nella precedente slide :
the walls of the town, the roof of the church, the keys of the car.
Tuttavia e possibile formulare la stessa frase the walls of the town (nome1 + of + nome2) cambiando l'ordine in questo modo:
the town walls (nome2 + nome1) the roof of the church > the church roof the keys of the car > the car keys
