Grid Technology
GRID MIDDLEWARE
The GRID middleware release for the production Grid in Europe:
•
developed within the DataGrid Project
• consolidated within the LCG Project
• improved within the EGEE project
THE GRID IS OPERATIONAL SINCE 2003
The GRID.IT infrastructure:
• More than 30 sites all over Italy
• Part of the EGEE/LCG grid (more than 200 sites)
• Middleware: InfnGrid-2.6.0, based on LCG-2.6.0
in the US:
• Condor, Legion, Cactus, ….
• The Globus Project (de facto standard)
• Teragrid, GriPhyn, iVDGL, Open Science Grid, … and in Europe:
• Unicore
• European DataGrid Project (EDG)
• European DataTAG Project (EDT)
• LHC Computing Grid Project (LCG)
• Crossgrid, NorduGRID, GridPP, Grid-IT,…
• The InfnGrid Project (http://grid.infn.it)
• The EGEE Project (http://www.eu-egee.org)
• And many other national and international grid projects
The GRID middleware provides transparent access to distributed computing and storage resources by means of a set of basic grid services:
• Authentication and Authorization
• Information System (for resource availability)
• Workload Management Service (for job scheduling)
• Data Management (for file access and replication)
• Secure and reliable file transfer service
• Monitoring and Accounting
THE GOAL: provide users with seamless access to computing resources independent of geographical location
APPLICATIONS
Grid users run more than 60 applications in different areas:
• High Energy Physics
• Earth Observation
• Biomedicine
• Computational Chemistry
• Medical images analysis
• 3D magnetic resonance images simulations
• Genome evolution modeling
• Simulation of material properties
• Simulation of bio organisms and phenomena
• Drug discovery
• Protein analysis
… and many others
