Biosketch

Born in Naples, Italy, 1968. Degree cum laudae in Biology, 1992. Phd in Ecology. Full Professor in Zoology and Marine Biology at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Trieste, Italy and Research Fellow at the Stazione Zoologica A. Dohrn of Naples.

His research activity focuses on marine diversity at different levels of biological hierarchy and on the quantification of spatial and distributional patterns of species, species assemblages and habitats, mostly in relation to human impacts and mitigation interventions.

He is actively involved, often as project/task leader, in national and international research programs and consultancies for environmental impact assessment and monitoring. He is an associate member of the CoNISMa, an Italian Consortium of 32 Universities that promotes research and scientific activities and their applications in the field of Marine Sciences.

Since 2001 he gave undergraduate and PhD courses in Zoology, Applied Zoology and Experimental Marine Ecology at the University of Salento, Lecce, Italy. Since 2017 he is responsible of the courses in General Zoology and Marine Biology at the University of Trieste. He has tutored 60 Master students, 12 PhD and 4 post doc at from Italy, France, Spain, Norway. Since 2017 he is the vice-coordinator of the PhD in “Environment and Life”

at the University of Trieste

Since 2001 has been invited to give scientific seminars in various Italian Universities (e.g.

Bologna, Palermo, Naples, Trieste) and research Institutions (e.g. CNR). Invited seminars were also given during research staying at the University of Auckland (NZ) and University of Oslo (NW). He has organized 4 international courses of statistics, for the Design and

Analyses of Biological Experiments and Multivariate Methods for Ecologists

He is actively involved in editorial activity of 31 ISI journals as a component of the board of referee, and he is a component of the editorial board of The European Zoological Journal. He is also involved as reviewer for National and International Research Proposal.

He is presently elected member of the Main Board of the Italian Society of Marine Biology (SIBM). Currently, he is an elected member of the Departments’ council of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples.

From 2012 to 2016 he was assigned by the Rector of the University of Salento, to the University committee for the Research. Since 2016 he leads the Marine Biology lab at the Dept. of Life Sciences, University of Trieste, where he also acts as delegate of the Director for research and coordinate the PhD program in Environment and Life.

In 2015 he has been selected by the The Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR) as a member of Groups of Experts of

Evaluation (GEV 5 - Biology) in the national research assessment exercise (Valutazione della Qualità della Ricerca, VQR 2011-2014).
