some mission areas of Assam the missionary took afull
year tovisit all
the villages and mission stations.In
the parish centre, there was generally a school and boarding hostelfor
boys,run
bythe
Sale-sians, and another forgirls
looked after by Sisters. Thusthrough
the parish and school the work of evangelisation and educationof
the people and of the children was given a certain systematic and consistent nature.Gradually, these mission stations grew and became full-fledged parishes
with
avariety
of services, andlater
developedinto
dioce-ses asthe numbers of the faithful
grew. Today we have atotal

number of 207 parishes and mission centres, serving the
spiritual
needs of 705,530faithful.
Social deuelopment programme as an integral
part
of missionary actiuityIn the pluri-religious
social setup
ofIndia, direct evangelisa-tion
and missionarywork
arenot
always possible. Social develop-ment programmes arein
some areasthe
only possible methodof
evangelisation.
Another
reason why great importance is givento
social devel-opment programmesin
the Region is because the vastmajority of
the population ofIndia
livein
underdeveloped conditions'Educa-tion, which
isthe
beginning of development andgrowth
(on the individual and collective levels), is often lacking, especially inrural
areas.
In
addition,there
are other pressing social issuesthat
themissionary must
addressif
he wishesto
makehis
evangelisingwork meaningful
andrelevant for the
people-
issues such as economic poverty, the unjustdistribution
of wealth, the oppression of the poor by therich
and the powerful, etc.The
Salesians ofthe
Region havetaken up
such issueswith
competence and evangelical vision; and are resolved to defend the oppressed,
the
down-trodden andthe
exploited, theignorant
and the uneducated.In
every Province ofthe
Region many Salesians and a team ofqualified
personnel conduct programmes and allo-cate money and manpower to the achievement of these aims. They arefully
supportedby the
Province- with
development officeswell
equipped and staffedby qualified
personnel,both
Salesian and lay; the projects are financed by local funds, and to a greatex-tent
by the Rector Major and foreign agencies which collect fundsfor
peoplesin
need.In the Region there are at least 138 social developmental works and those benefitting number about 800,000 individuals of various categories and
with different
needs.Significant

and the orphans displaced by the disastroustidal
wave.5. Holiness of the first missionaries
A real implanting of the charism implies the emergence of
fruits
of holiness. Here
I
want to recall two confreres who took seriously their vocation to be missionaries, and their calling to holiness;their
names are among the Servants of God of our Society.
Archbishop Stephen Ferrando ( 1 895- 197 8)
Stephen Ferrando was born on 28 September 1895,
into
a very religiousfamily
of Rossigliano, in the Province of Genoa.Later
he would say,"From
myfamily I
received therich
heritage of a great lovefor
God andthe
Madonna,a spirit of
sacrifice and ajovial nature"."
Soonafter his first
professionin tgL2,
when asked bythe
superiors abouthis
choice of afuture
apostolate, heunhesi-tatingly
chose to be a missionary.After
hismilitary
servicein
the war, having received medals and certificatesfor his
courage and valour, he was ordained priestin
1923. His missionary dream wasfulfilled
when he was allowed to leavefor India with
eight young novices and a cleric. He reached Shillong on 22 December ofthat
year.
Once he reached the land of his missionary dream, his mission-ary zealknew no bounds. At frrst he was made socius,then director
of
novices andrector of the
house of studies.During this time

he had also
to
standin for the
Prefect Apostolic, Mgr. Mathias,in
his absence. Even while holding these responsibilities, he was a missionary at heart and did not miss a chance tovisit
villages and preach the Gospel.In
1934 he was consecrated Bishop of Krishnagar, andin
1935 wastransferred to
Shillong.His
episcopalmotto
was 'Apostleof Christ".
As an apostle ofChrist,
he touredthe
mission areas and villages widely on foot, asfar
as his health wouldpermit.
He usedto tell his priests,
"You cannotrun
aboutin
vehiclesto
convert souls;to
approaeh peopleand
solvetheir
problemsyou
should go walking",23 andwalk
hedid
even as a Bishop,for miles
and milesin
searchof
souls.After the
example ofthe
Apostle of theGentiles,
he madehimself all things to all
people,learned the
languages of his people and picked uptheir
customs and mannersso as to understand
their
ethos and to preach Christ to them more effectively.He was Bishop of Shillong for 35 longyears, and developed the diocese well. Often he used to pray:
"Lord,
as the Shepherd of the flock,I
offer my Iife as a sacrifice for the good of the sheep, the sal-vation of the souls entrusted to my care". TheLord
indeed heard his prayer and blessed his diocese of Shillong. Todayit
has growninto

Sistersof Mary Help of Christians,
aboutwhich
we spoke earlier. He wasknown

1978 and wasoriginally buried in
hisfamily
tombin
Rossiglione. Later, accedingto
his desirethat
his bones be buried in the soil of the Khasi hills, they werere-interred
in the Convent Chapel of the Mother House of the Sisters.In
