Why in
recent years havewe
declaredwar
on superficiality?Why did
VaticanII remind
us that consecrated life is orderedprimarily
to bringing its membersto follow
Christ and be unitedwith
God, andthat they
are therefore calledat the
present dayto
a strong spiritual renewal, and that this has prideof
place evenin
external apostolic works? Is therenot
a danger that we shall get entrenchedin
work and action,with
greater attention to thework of our
handsthan the vitality of our
heart? "Ec-stasy of action" and "excuse of action" are not the same thing atall.
"Excuseof
action" can bejust
aharmful trap; it is a
caricatureof the
"ecstasyof
action" describedby
St Francis de Sales and livedby
Don Bosco.Today the times demand a more explicit return to prayer. A rewakening
in
this regard can be seen throughout the Church, also among the young asI
noted earlier.
It
is akind of
prayerthat
isin
har-monywith
the reawakening of faith: to be commit-ted believers and not just people of habit, implies a dialoguewith the [,ord which is more
explicit, more frequent and more intense.In
an atmosphereof
secularism a pressing need is feltfor
meditationand a
deepeningof faith; many of the
faithful, young people amongthem,
areled to
listenwith
greater attentionto
theWord of
God andto
con-versemore
deeplywith God himself.
Religious, who are called to be in the wordsof

"spe-cialistsin
prayer", must make every effortto
growin this their
particular characteristic: "Mission re-quires,in
fact, of all who are sent that they stimu-latetheir lorp in
the dialogue of prayer".aoWell indeed did

priority
to the mo-ments of explicit prayer, fostering ways of renewal and suitably highlighting its importance. Such mo-ments are a vital reservefor
stirring up real enthu-siasmfor
our own charism and contribute to mak-ing the confreres living suggestions of Christ to the young.Precisely because
our prayer
leads naturallyto
witnessin life
and apostolicactivity, we
must take care that it be genuine, renewed, frequent andinvolving. Every confrere should feel
himself directly challenged in this matter because, asI
said oncebefore, "without the individual there is
no prayer".alBlolt Provincials and Rectors are asked
to

special initiativesin this
regard;their
interest and interventions canbring

this vital task. The GC23 commits the Pro-vincialto

appointto the provincial team for
youth pastoralwork an

shape, coor-dinate, promote and maintainthe

among his confreres, so that they may become animatorsof
educative commu-nities and the Salesian Family, ensure the function-ing of the various roles of service, make vocational suggestionsand follow up the more

maturing.To her he entrusted that original initiative of pasto-ral creativity that he called the "Work of Mary Help

Christians".He
always cultivated an extraordi-narytrust in her
solicitous intercession, especiallyin
timesdifficult for
finding vocations..We must continually relive
in
the Congregation that solemn act of entrustment made by the GC22,in which we
entrustedto her
among other things"an increase
in

the conviction thatwith her we can
undertakegreat things for
the good of the young.In
fact, as the Constitutions tell us, "we believe that Mary is present among us and continues her mission as Mother of the Church and Helpof

are convincedthat Our
Lady, intimately unitedwith
the Holy Spirit, isin
history also the mother and educator of vocations. She has been defined by the Pope as "the human being whohas
respondedbetter than any other to
God's call"'46 She nourished and educated Jesus, who wecould
say wasthe
"vocation supreme". When inthe

JerusalemMary found the
twelve year old Jesus and toldhim
of the pain endured by Joseph and herself during three daysof
searchingfor him,
she receivedthe reply: "Why were
you looking for me? Did you not know thatI
must be inmy
Father's house?"47We can
