the Sanctuary of Mary Help of Christians, Don Rua restored, embellished and decoratedit.
The solemn 'crowning' of thepicture
ofMary
Help of Christians which took placein
the Valdocco Sanctuaryin
1903, was obtained byhim from the
Pope and performed by Cardinal Richelmy, Papal Legate. On 17Febru-3n Positio,p.B39.

ary he announced the great event to the Salesians saying:
"Let
usstrive to
make ourselves lessunworthy of our
heavenlyMother
and Queen, andlet
us preachwith
ever greater zealher
glories and maternal tenderness.In
a prodigious manner she inspired and guided our Don Bosco in all his great undertakings; She continued andstill
continues today such maternal assistance in all our works, sothat with
Don Bosco we can repeat, all that
we have we oweit
to Mary the Most Holy Help of Christians".'u The day of the crown-ing, 17 May, was a most solemn one
with
a veritable sea of people.Fr
Melchiorre Marocco testifies:"Fr
lJbaldi andI
were assistantsto the throne
ofthe
Papal Legate and therefore we were ableto
observedthe truly
ecstatic expression of Don Rua, who when he saw His Eminence place the holy crowns on the heads of theChild
and of the Madonnaburst into
copious tears,which
surprised usnot
alittle
since we knew the absolute self-control he had".36On 19 June, grving an account of the events to all the Salesians
in
the world, Don Rua wrote:"I
am very pleased tothink that
the coronation ofthe miracle-working
image ofMary Help of Chris-tians will
produce amongthe
Salesians spread aroundthe world
the mostfertile fruits.
Shewill
increase our love, our devotion, andour gratitude to
our heavenly Patroness,to
whom we oweall
the goodthat
we have been able to do...In
these memorable solemni-ties of ours the name of Mary Help of Christians was alwayslinked with that
of Don Bosco, who,with extraordinary
sacrifices, raised upthis
Sanctuary,with
his words andwith
his pen he became the apostle of devotionto
her, and he placedall
histrust in her
mostpowerful intercession. How beautiful it was to
seeso
manypilgrims,
after having satisfredtheir
devotionin
church, all lining up to visit, with profound veneration, the
roomsof Don
Bosco!I
have nodoubt at all that with
an increase among Salesiansof
devotion to Mary Help of Christians, there
will
also be an increasein
esteem and affection for Don Bosco, as well asin
a commitment to preserve hisspirit
andimitate
hisvirtues"."
