Editorial

Preface

The 11th Cologne/Twente Workshop on Graphs and Combinatorial Optimization (CTW2012) took place at the Universität der Bundeswehr München, Germany, from May 29 to 31, 2012.

The present collection of articles documents the state of the art of the scientific topics to which the workshop was devoted and projects paths for further developments in this active area of research. We are grateful to Endre Boros for the opportunity to extend an ‘‘open invitation’’ to the international community of researchers in the field to contribute to a special issue of

Discrete Applied Mathematics with articles relating to the workshop. We are pleased that so many colleagues accepted this

invitation. We hope this special issue will be found a valuable addition to the body of methodological knowledge about graph and discrete optimization models.

The series of Cologne/Twente Workshops follows a growing demand in the research community, and annual meetings are hosted alternatingly by different academic institutions.

Sadly, 2012 was the year we had to say ‘‘Adieu’’ to Francesco Maffioli. Thank You very much again for the impressive CTW2004 at Villa Vigoni. We will miss You.

Although Ulrich Faigle is one of the Guest Editors of this volume, four of us feel that this preface is also the place to say ‘‘Alles Gute’’ to Ulrich Faigle who is the inventor of this workshop series. Together with Johann Hurink and Leo Liberti, he developed this format. Ulrich Faigle doesn’t like celebrations, the 11th workshop is not a special mathematical birthday, it is for him a Cologne jubilee . . . .

Therefore, this is the right time and place to say ‘‘Thank You very much, with all best wishes for the future’’ to Ulrich Faigle.

We look forward to future contributions from all researchers interested in these CTW workshops.
