The rise of political, religious and productive organizations has always required the evaluation of their members. The growth of companies, especially the knowledge-intensive ones, needs a human resources evaluation system which is congruent with the reality of the day-to-day work, with the culture and the principles which dominate the organization. The first part focuses on the present role played by the Human Resources function and on the typical elements of staff evaluation: the so-called 3P (position, potential and performance). After the evaluation of positions, the attention concentrates on the main topic of performance evaluation. The purposes, the development, the salient points and the company methodology adopted: from the evaluation of the results obtained to that of the behaviour exhibited, from the Performance Appraisal to the Performance Management, to the evaluation of Competences. Finally, it is quoted the company case of Fabio Perini’s S.p.A, which in 2005 launched its own staff evaluation system.
