Standard-gauge railway
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
TANZANIA’s president Mr John Magufuli officially
launched construction on April 12 of the first phase of the country’s 2561km standard-gauge railway project which will eventually link the Indian Ocean port of Dar es Salaam with Mwanza on Lake Victoria and Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika, as well as neighboring Rwanda and Burundi.
The 205km first phase will run from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and is expected to be completed October 2019
COMPLETION:

INVESTMENT:
US$1, 2 billion
PROJECT:
Upgrading the existing 970km narrow-gauge railway to a standard gauge
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Railway from Dar es Salaam to Isaka in northern Tanzania and Kigali in Rwanda with a link from Keza to Musongati in Burundi. The line will be built primarily for freight trains with a 32.4 tonne axle load, though some passenger services will also be available.

PROJECT:
Tanzania builds an electric railway
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Tanzania said its electric railway has been designed to support a maximum speed of 160km per hour for passenger trains and 120km per hour for freight. It is expected to be complete within 30 months. In every hour, the Tanzanian train would cover an extra stretch of 40 kilometres ahead of the Kenyan train. Besides speed, Tanzania’s line also appears to be slightly superior since it is electric. At US$1.92 billion, which translates to about Sh192 billion at current exchange rates, Tanzania appears to have secured the cheapest railway construction deal in the region, given that it will be spending nearly half of what Kenya spent to build the first phase from Mombasa to Nairobi.
STAGE IN PROJECT:

STAGE IN PROJECT CYCLE:
Pre-feasibility
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Kenya and Uganda have reached an agreement on the synchronisation of timelines and financing of the construction of the Naivasha to Kampala section of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Project. Under the accord, the two countries have resolved that construction on this section should start simultaneously. The two countries have approached the Export and Import (EXIM) Bank of China to fund the project. Uganda’s Railway Master Plan has set out to construct the SGR line in phases, similar to Kenya’s model. The first phase, which will run 273km from Malaba to Kampala, is projected to cost US$ 2.3 billion. Construction is set to commence later this year and will be executed by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). Kenya has achieved significant
milestones in the construction of their section of the SGR line. Construction on the Mombasa to Nairobi section of Kenya’s SGR network is 98% complete and will be commissioned on June 1, 18 2017. The track facilitated transportation of locomotives and passenger coaches from Mombasa to Nairobi is underway, and the laying of the track panels is complete. Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has signed commercial contracts with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for the construction of the Nairobi to Malaba section. Currently, the Relocation Action Plan is being implemented before construction commences.

ETHIOPIA
PROJECT:
Awash Woldia/Hara Gebeya Railway
STAGE IN PROJECT CYCLE:
Implemented
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
“The new railway line will connect northern Ethiopia with the country’s central region.”
The Ethiopian Government has been undertaking several transportation projects as part of a five-year growth and transformation plan (GTP), which aims to enhance the transportation network within the country by connecting to adjacent countries and ports. It will provide efficient mobility and improve the export and import activities, boosting the economic development. National Railway Network of Ethiopia (NRNE) is one of the several projects constituted in the plan.
ERC has recognised eight railway routes as significant for development. These routes will have a total length of approximately 5,060km, including buffer.
NRNE projects will be implemented in two phases. Phase one is composed of five railway projects, which include Addis Ababa – Djibouti Railway Project, Mekele – Woldia/
Hara Gebeya – Semera-Tadjourah Port Railway Project, Addis Ababa – Ijaji-Jimma-Dima, including Jimma – Bedele Railway Project, Awash-Kombolcha-Hara Gebeya Railway Project and Mojo-Shashemene-Arbaminich- Weyto Railway Project.
Phase two includes six projects, Jimma-Guraferda- Dima diorected to Boma, Ijaji-Nekemet-Assosa- Kumuruk, Mekele-Shire, Fenoteselam-Bahirdar- Wereta-Woldia, Wereta Azazo-Metema and Adama-Indeto-Gassera-Ginir.
INVESTMENT:
US$ 1.7 billion
FINANCIAL & OTHER PARTIES:

PROJECT:
Addis Ababa - Djibouti standard-gauge railway
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Turkish construction company Yapi Merkezi began work on the 375km Awash - Kombolcha - Weldiya line/Hara Gebeya line in February 2015 and the project is now 57%-complete. By the end of June 250km of track had been laid and ERC expects the first test run to take place at the southern end of the line next month. The project includes the construction of 12 tunnels totalling 10km, as well as 65 bridges, and 824 culverts.
STAGE IN PROJECT:

RWANDA, BURUNDI, TANZANIA
PROJECT:
Tanzania-Rwanda railway
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The new contract relates to the 300km section of line between Dar and Morogoro. Construction is expected to take 30 months on the US$1.1bn project. This seems expensive for the length of line involved but includes the port and Dar es Salaam city infrastructure, so the remaining three sections as far as Kigali
are expected to be completed at a lower cost per kilometre. The three tenders are expected to close by mid-2019, so construction work is expected to place simultaneously on all four stretches, creating a great deal of employment in the process. The second contract will relate to the 336km section from Morogoro to the ostensible Tanzanian capital Dodoma.
STAGE IN PROJECT:
Implemented
INVESTMENT:
