Hamburger

A German name for an American rampant tradition The history of “Hamburgers” starts in

Hamburg, Germany, where raw meat was eaten minced and seasoned with spices.

When the Germans emigrated to the States, they took this traditional food with them, together with their hopes and dreams. Thus, the Far West history speaks about a hamburger-style steak eaten there already at the beginning of the 19

th

century. It was a meat-ball, at first; but later the pioneers adapted it to their way of life, and squeezed it between two slices of bread, so that they could eat it easily on a covered wagon or on horseback, while riding through the States. The legend says that Charlie Nagreen, a 15 years old boy, invented and sold the first sandwich with a

hamburger inside, at Seymour, a far off place in Wisconsin.

Since then, hamburgers have been spreading everywhere: nowadays, thanks to big chains

fast food restaurants opening their premises in all countries, they have become the preferred

food for children and young people all over the world, even if they are really far from each

national cooking tradition.
