Markus Gut is one of Switzerland’s best-known advertisers (CEO and Partner, Process AG, Zurich, Shanghai, Taipei). He likes wine, Nocino and Grappa.
Especially when it originates from his own estate Al Mulinetto in Gordola, high above Lago Maggiore.
His newest addition is a Nocino from Grappa americana and selected walnuts. Its limited
availability – 100 bottles a year – makes it «as rare as the opportunity to fi nd a rhino in a suit and tie»;
that’s why a rhinoceros adorns its label. According to a decades-long tradition, the walnuts are harvested on the night of St. John’s. Placed in the liqueur, the nuts will develop their full aroma. The Nocino then ripens under the sun of Gordola for 40 days.

In the heart of Lugano, in a spectacular, elevated position overlooking the lake, lies the fattoria
«Moncucchetto» of Lisetta and Niccolò Lucchini. The cellar, surrounded by vines, was made famous by the Ticino star architect Mario Botta with a new building in 2009. A stroke of luck for Moncucchetto. Like the saucy enologist Cristina Monico, who has provided a breath of fresh air at the estate over the past decade. She fi lls the bottles with something exceptional, pressing sensuous red wines with much fl air. She has a special love for spumante: her Refolo brut is a sparkling discovery and is already one of the best sparkling wines in the country.
DEGUSTATION Bright yellow. Lively, fi ne perlage, ripe, yellow fruits, citrus, brioche. Strong, creamy structure on the palate, juicy acidity, good, aromatic length.
A successful, elegant sparkling wine made from Chardonnay (85%) and Pinot noir (15%).

The Domaine Saint-Sébaste of the Kuntzer family in St. Blaise on Lake Neuchâtel has been working according to the rules of biodynamics for years, and has been Demeter certified since 2015. This results in intense and exciting wines – especially when they are pressed unconventionally.
Like the Vieilles Vignes 2019, a Chasselas made from 40-year-old vines that was matured for 12 months in a concrete egg and only put on the market after 12 more months of bottle storage. «Thanks to biodynamics, our wines do not flatten on the palate, and the taste is consistently intense,» explains young winemaker Elodie Kuntzer, who is taking over the estate from her father Jean-Pierre Kuntzer in the third generation this year. Around 19 hectares belong to the Domaine Saint-Sébaste. Almost two thirds are planted with Pinot Noir, 30 percent with Chasselas and the rest with specialties. The Kuntzers have always consciously relied on single-variety wines.
TASTING Light yellow. Fruity, intense nose, elegant prelude, mineral aromas, floral notes, complex, finely salty.
Full, full-bodied, but also delicate, lively structure that gives freshness, pleasant acidity, long-lasting finish. One of the most exciting Swiss Chasselas.

The wines of Andreas and Marisol Florin grow «am Chlinge- berg» above Stein am Rhein. Around half of their 3.5 hec- tares are planted with Pinot Noir, around a third with Ries- ling-Silvaner, the rest is made up of Pinot gris, Chardonnay and Riesling. It seems to be especially the white varieties that have found in Andreas Florin a cellar master who teases the best out of them. The self-presser from Stein am Rhein in the canton of Schaffhausen studied agronomy at the ETH and oenology in Montpellier. Ten years of apprenti- ceship and travelling around the world followed, before he became a senior buyer and oenologist at Schuler in Seew- en. A dream job, as he says. And yet, the desire to produce his own wine prevailed. Florin, who grew up in Maienfeld, calls wines made from grapes of above average quality from vines that are at least 15 years old «Auslese». Three white lilies conspicuously adorn the labels - they come from his family’s coat of arms..
DEGUSTATION Medium yellow. Subtle nose, piquant spiciness, aromas of cold fermentation, attractive. Tight initial taste, vibrating middle section, pleasantly dry, mineral hints, notes of agrumen, long, straight finale.
A harmonious and powerful Pinot Gris.

Experimenting with white varieties as well as French bar- riques, Martin Donatsch’s father Thomas was one of the Swiss wine pioneers. And he certainly passed his oeno- logical enterprising spirit on to his son. Martin Donatsch has created something new with his Pinot Noir «Unique», something of his very own – exploring the limits of what is possible. The «Unique» turned Martin Donatsch into a shooting star among the winegrowers of the Bündner Herrschaft, and it’s certainly one of the best red wines of Switzerland – his Pinot Réserve Privée 2013 was auctioned off for a top price of 1075 Swiss Francs per bottle. But Martin Donatsch also knows a thing or two about white wine, from Chardonnay to Completer. We recommend his 2019 Pinot Blanc. The «Ochsen» inn in Malans with its blue tiled stove, acquired by the Donatsch family in 1897, is the Donatsch family‘s extended living room. A meeting point for guests from the village and the near and far surroundings. And for national and international wine lovers.
TASTING Mineral, silky, elegant bouquet, pears, fine citrus, candied honey, delicate chamomile, chalk. Finely creamy, fruity, fresh palate, strong fruit, fine and well integrated acidity, dense structure, long, full finish. Can still improve.

Directly on the language border between Salgesch and Sierre, in the heart of the Bernese vineyards of Bernunes and with a view of the nature reserve Pfynwald, the neat cellar of Nicholas Zufferey is situated. Twenty-five years ago, after his oenology studies at the wine school in Changins, he started the Cave des Bernunes. Today Zufferey manages 10 hectares. «Cʼest le raisin qui fait le vin», he emphasized, it is the grapes that make up a good wine. «The terroir provides the character, humans determine the quality.» The label for the Pinot gris 2020 was designed by Noé Proton.
TASTING Velvety, closed, mineral bouquet, pears, tea leaves, slate. Fruity, full on the palate, strong, sweet fruit, light acidity, sweet aromas, creamy structure, fine finish.

The fact that the wines from Lake Zurich have become socially acceptable is due to winemaker Erich Meier from Uetikon. The top Swiss gastronomy scrambles to get his wines, they are even to be found in Basel - at Tanja Granditsʼ «Stucki». Over the last few years, Meier has been an adventurous Lake Zurich «ambassador», ensuring that the vineyards on the Gold Coast are no longer simply equated with light and sweet Räuschling.
The most recent fi nding from the cellar of Erich Meier is the vintage 2018 Sauvignon blanc.
DEGUSTATION Mineral, strong, fi ne-grained, fresh bouquet, white peach, mint leaves, chives, lychee. Velvety, full, fresh palate, powerful fruit, very good acidity, fragrant aromas, long, fresh fi nish.

The Cornalin, first mentioned in the canton of Valais over 700 years ago and once known as the old red «vin du pays», had long been one of the forgotten varieties. But it has been experiencing a revival for a good three decades and is now considered the number one wine specialty of the Valais. 155 hectares are currently planted with Cornalin in the Valais, the most important and diverse wine-growing region in Switzerland with 4766 hectares. Philippe Darioli, a winemaker in Riddes, has been running his own 3 hectare winery for 18 years. In a vineyard with parcels in the muni- cipalities of Leytron and Chamoson, his Cornalin grows on a terroir of limestone and slate. Darioli, a dynamic farmer‘s son with a Changins degree, develops it as a single variety in tanks or barriques. Philippe Darioli bought his first vineyard in 1996 and started his own business in 2003, but he had previously trained with two big names in local viticulture – Marie-Thérèse Chappaz and Didier Joris.
TASTING Medium-dense garnet red. Medium-intense, somewhat reserved nose, Amarena cherries, grenadine.
Full on the palate, full texture, soft, noble tannins, present, well-integrated acidity, intense, complex, typical fruit, more Amarena cherries, grenadine syrup, subtly spicy notes, wonderfully balanced, harmonious, dense, long finish.
A very attractive, typical Cornalin.

When Credit Suisse (CS) was still called Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (SKA), Meinrad C. Perler was a well-known banker in Ticino. A farmer‘s son, he changed his
trade in the 1980s and bought a rather shabby estate in Mendrisiotto called “Ör” (gold). Perler – a tinkerer and tireless worker who set up an experimental vineyard with 600 different grape varieties by himself – turned the abandoned farm into an exceptional wine-growing business. Tenimento dell’Ör (official name: Agriloro) has been part of the Ticino’s wine elite for years. Its diverse range of wines includes 21 labels and 28 grape varieties.
While Perler initially sold his grapes to local wine producers, he started bottling wines under his own name in 1994. In 2002, he acquired another vineyard, La Prella, in the hills of Genestrerio. This is where our Merlot Riserva 2016, matured for 20 months in French barriques, comes from.
TASTING Velvety, dense, complex, fresh bouquet, blue and black berries, cherries, fine liquorice, mint, fine herbs.
Tightly interwoven, elegant, multi-layered palate, fine tannins, creamy, dense structure, diverse aromas, long, fresh finish. Has potential to improve.

From the Besson-Strasser winery it’s only a 10-minute walk to the Rhine Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe.
Every second 700 cubic meters flow over the 150 meter wide and 23 meter high rock. That wine and Rhine rhyme cannot be a coincidence. The Rhine and culinary delights – it’s a perfect fit. The 1233 kilometer long river is home to many winemakers. Like Nadine and Cédric Besson-Strasser from Uhwiesen at the Rhine Falls. They cultivate six hectares of vineyards in the cantons of Zurich and Schaffhausen in a biodynamic and cross-border manner. Their top wine is the Pinot Chlosterberg, and their Zweigelt and Malbec are specialties worth discovering. The Albi – a homage to the winery’s founder Albert «Albi» Strasser – remains an insiders’ tip; a Pinot rarity from Gächlingen that has been matured in barriques for 18 months, and of which only 3300 bottles are filled per vintage. «The quality of our wines emerges from the vineyard», say the winemaker couple. In the wine cellar they just give their wines «time to become».
TASTING Floral, strong, silky bouquet, currants, blueberries, cedar, nougat. Tightly interwoven, classic, elegant palate, strong aromas, fine fruit, lots of good tannins, fine muscular structure, long, aromatic finish.

The young history of the L’Orpailleur winery only began in 1999. L’Orpailleur means gold washer and the brothers Dumoulin, Frédéric and David, are indeed some sort of gold diggers. They founded the jointly managed wine estate over 20 years ago, with vineyards on the right bank of the Rhone between Sion and St. Leonard. L’Orpailleur has 24 hectares of vines, and 180000 bottles are filled annually. The most important Orpailleur wine is the Syrah Grand Cru Ville de Sion, with its grapes originating from the oldest vines. It is aged in barriques for 18 months, 40 percent of those in new wood. The main vineyard is in the small village of Uvrier, where the company‘s headquarters are located. Three years ago, in order to optimize processes, a luminous building was added to the winery, complete with a barrel cellar and tasting room. The brothers believe that the contemporary building’s resemblance to a gold bar is purely coincidental.
TASTING Medium density garnet red. Intense, complex nose, noble roasted aromas, vanilla, candied berries, cinnamon.
Full on the palate, soft texture, soft tannins, present, well integrated acidity, intense, multi-layered fruit, berry-jam- like, well integrated roasted aromas, full-bodied, harmonious, long finish. An expressive Syrah from a warm vintage.

The fact that winemaker Marie-Thérèse Chappaz didn’t become a midwife – as had been her original wish – has something to do with a gift from her father: On her 17th birth- day, she was given a plot of land in the municipality of Charrat. Marie-Thérèse Chappaz did, however, start working at a hospital, but the hierarchical system was not her thing.
She traveled the world, but missed the valley and her family and eventually found her way back to the Valais. After studying oenology, she moved into the house of her great- uncle Maurice Troillet with its vineyards in Fully. MTC now cultivates 14 hectares, distributed over 30 parcels in 4 municipalities. Her sweet rarities are famous: Grain Noble Petite Arvine 2017 (2000 bottles) and Grain Noble Marsanne blanche 2017 (3500).
