SUMMARY
Obesity and its most related complications are chronic illnesses that require a long lasting therapy.
Like most chronic diseases, a definitive cure for obesity, though theoretically possible, is very difficult to achieve. The main purpose of the treatment therefore remains to control the manifestations of the disease and the prevention of its complications. Obesity therapy is nowadays imagined as a combination of interventions of increasing intensity, whose use is commensurate with the clinical history of the patient and the degree of evolution or gravity of the obesity. This article will review the main therapeutic means available today for obesity, with particular regard to their effect on the evolution of the disease: lifestyle modification, anti-obesity drugs and bariatric surgery. In addition, the most recent guidelines for choosing the appropriate level of therapy in each individual patient will be proposed.
Keywords: obesity, lifestyle, anti-obesity drugs, bariatric surgery.
