A SIMPLE PROOF OF UNIQUENESS

FOR TORSION MODULES OVER P.I.D.'S

J-L. García Roig

The aim of this paper is to glve an alternative proof of uniqueness for the decomposition of a flnitely gene¬ rated torsión module over a P.I.D.(= principal ideal domain)

as a direct sum of indecomposable submodules.

Our proof tries to mimic as far as we can the

standard procedures used when dealing with vector spaces. For the sake of completeness we also inelude a

proof of the existence theorem.

We recall that if M is a finitely generated torsión

module over a P.I.D. R then M=©

Mp

,

where

p runs

through

a

complete set of representatives of prime

(or

irreducible)

elements of R. The

Mp

are

unique: in fact

Mp=U(0:pn).

More-njl

over, if Ann(M)=

(p1i..pkK),

then

Mp=0 for p¿(p^,...,pk }, i.e.

k

M= © M .

i=l

Pi

Our interest now concerns each summand, i.e., we consider a finitely generated module annihilated by a power of

an irreducible element p of R. For these we have

Existence Theorem. Let R be a P.I.D., p a prime element in R

and M¿0 a finitely generated R-module annihilated by some

same thing, of

Proof. By inductlon on the number of generators. Let

x^,...,x

be a finite set of generators for M. We may assume without loss

of generality that

Xj^

has maximal period,

say

pn,

n>0

(so

that

in particular

Ann(M)=pnR

).

Consider the exact sequence of

R-modules:

0

»M

*0

— M/

with M = 'x R

• This can be viewed as an exact sequence of

O D D

/Pnn_modules and as

/

_n_ is an Injective

/

p K p r\

( see below ), we have the splitting

M s x,^R © R =

p R

As M is generated by the cosets of x ,...,x , induction may

be applied.

p c p

S-homo-morphism f:

f'is defined by its effect on p

).

Let

£(p*)1

= q. As

pn-i

annihilates

p*

and therefore '5, we may write

q = R'r for some reS. Deflning now f: S—»S by

f(l)

= r,

we get an extensión of f.

We

must necessarily have n « m.1 . Then y = a x +...+a x for

we may assume and

p to be coprime - otherwlse the period of

y^

not

-whence there exist r,s ln R such that 1 =

a^r+spn.

So

ryl

if

y^=a1x1+..,+a^x^

we conclude that

pn|b^

so

that

b^y^=0,

and consequently each

In other words,

M =

from this

Now we can apply induction to get unlqueness.

We cannot proceed further, for the R-modules of

D

type / n_ , p prime, are indecomposable, i.e., cannot be

P R

expressed as a direct sum of proper submodules. This is so

because, as we have remarked before, the submodules are of

the form
