ENHANCING THE BIODIVERSITY OF FOREST ECOSYSTEMS
BIO∆4 project for biodiversity
The BIO∆4 project aims at:
• enhancing the biodiversity of forest ecosystems;
• counteracting the loss of biodiversity and fostering active and sustainable forest management;
• defining a method for fast assessment of forest biodiversity;
• helping to protect wooded lands and enhancing the products and services that they supply to the community.
THE BIODIVERSITY and GREAT TREES of the CANSIGLIO FOREST TRAIL
Biodiversity, a characteristic of
ecosystems, refers to the richness and variety of animal and plant species existing in a specific environment, such as, for example, a forest, a wetland or a high-altitude grassland. On a broader scale, biodiversity also represents the variety and alternation of ecosystems within a certain geographical region.
Biodiversity is not just a natural wealth in and of itself, but a requirement for ecosystem stability: the more biodiverse an ecosystem, the greater its capacity to withstand natural and anthropic disturbances. This translates into greater possibilities of preserving itself over time.
